Some time ago I did a whole series on setting up or replacing Netflix, but it's been a while and I've had a few more comments recently of people asking sort of where do I start? What do I need? So I have created this definitive list of what you need to replace every one of those services.

ZaibaPlex doesn't support "watch together" anymore. jellyfin had horrible and transcribing process. 4k on modern codecs just stalls the system and doubles the library size
all that sucks.

Krystianfor the tunnel options couldn't you simply purchase a vps from ovh for example with unlimited bandwidth ( costs about £5-6 a month) setup a wireguard server on that and then connect your vm/server that does the downloading/sourcing to that wireguard VPN? I assume it would essentially work the same, the only difference is you just have to setup the wireguard server?
yup, set up pangolin on a vps and you're solid.
GeorgeburdellWhat VPN would you recommend? I assume you’d need a VPN for all of this stuff
FrodoBagginsMullvad
SuuuuperOr just use certain websites
winning puddleall i need to know is Does it work for anime?
yes!
Pikiani Foodit's cause of the driht WW all of us arep paying for it even though we don't want it....

thegoddamnbecksterlidarr is not being actively developed. it's getting more and more difficult to use.
Walter 🇦🇷geez, are you sure you have enough apps installed?
nope.. do you think I need more?
Walter 🇦🇷🤣
wahnaldinhoKodi+POV+RD = no need for server? (I had HP micro server and nzb 15+ years ago, it worked but just needed maintenance)
Aaron GI use Tailscale for remote access. Completely free.
GermsI don't pay for media anymore 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
GretTorrenting is very 2010. RD is an absolute game changer 🤝
ArtsyKatieAll I'm gonna say is I haven't paid for a streaming service in years.... 🏴☠️
JPyou don't have to subscribe to everything all the time
user526532You don't HAVE to pay for any of those services.
correct.
KellyI'm buying back my dvds from the charity shop! Can't believe I fell for the streaming con
we all did
just_adila_amiyou guys are paying for all these??
I'm sure some people are paying for a few of them.
Perspective _Pulse🤩You don’t need these things. Go find alternatives to engage your mind and time. I don’t have any of these subscriptions 😁
Patrick MercierThey did this on purpose.
yup
stewieexplainssBro that is way to many steps, just pay for brave vpn and stream from a website
I just to like to make things hard.
MKodi + RD 😉
Leafis prowlarr an alternate to jackett?
yes similar
Leafcool. im familiar with just about everything else you've mentioned, as I've been running my own server for over a decade. this is a very good startup guide tho. glad we have people like yourself helping other enter the high seas.
I do what I can! 😁
v0rt3x189Will I do all of this? No. Did I watch it anyway cause it’s cool? Yes.
kesezroThanks man, you're such a great creator. I did your tutorial quite a while ago, everything works really good. In the meantime got 2 1tb drives 😉
that's great news :)
joaofamartinsHow does no one mention Kodi?
I should do a video on it.
joaofamartinsDid you end up doing it?
oh, I didn't, but I will, thanks for the reminder!
AntonioAfter 7 years with plex, i replaced with Jelly. So happy with the change, free&donate policy its the best thing ever.i will try your apps, but honestly doing some things manually it kinda fun
I did a similar thing myself.
Eric Updegrove855thank you for teaching us! I already have this set up but love seeing others setups.
Toju™️What about for love sports
Sportarr is what you want. I have a video on it!
Porkchop SangwhichesI’ve had this kind of setup on a seedbox service for many years rather than a local setup. Never heard of Maintainerr though. I just go in a manually delete things I’ve already watched and don’t want to keep. Thanks
Porkchop SangwhichesArrrrrrrrrrr 🏴☠️👍👍
TunnFCool stuff, but 99.99999999999999999999999% of people will not jump through all these hoops. VPN+qTorrent done.
Kelekelio 🇪🇺„Have to pay”… 🤔 have to??? 🤨
you're right you don't HAVE to pay, but it's pay for or nothing.
ya_boiMccheese"Habr to pay for..."
emzito de mobwho has dstv shows?
DazzI host my server on my gaming pc with Jellyfin. If you have no idea how to do it all just use chatgpt. It does cost money buying a domain and Usenet. Also need to compress movie and TV files to save space but it's so worth it.
Tony𒉭opranoWe? Whos we
them.
Gregstremio.
honestwords02It will be helpful if you can also tell us how to create accounts so each member of family can have account for watching movies and tv series
jellyfin and Plex both have account management just for that!
honestwords02Wow amazing, thanks mate
Saying hi from Africa. I'm watching everything for "free"😭😭😭
hi to Africa!
BorisJust a 8tb usb drive on a usb c hub with a chromecast works fine too for me
Critzbro works for the government didn't even mention a VPN
lol, yup a d one day I'll get a pay check rather than them constantly trying to take all my money! I have a number of videos on how to set up VPNs for this stuff :)
Grumpy Ass Gen XerThere's a reason. Shareholders

LMy partner signed up in the far east for Netflix... $1 a month, same service, gone up since but not by much, yes you're getting screwed.
Elin | AI Strategy StudiosHow to get rid of browsers taking up my RAM?
JimmyB13449Stremio with real debris setup seems far more straightforward, especially for Joe bloggs just wanting to get rid of his 10 subscriptions. This is way more of a hobbyist approach IMO.
soregistosptStremio 🤣
Keanu's Brick Worldwhat is wrong with BitTorrent, plex and use the rssfeed from showrss (all free as well)
Ned YoungStremio with the correct unofficial plugins, and you only need Smart TV.
grouhlThis is great stuff! I've run Plex on an old Intel Nuc that sits on a shelf in my living room for years. Not as comprehensive as this solution, but it's VERY easy to get running (costs money if you want to use phone and TV apps though).
TokoNLDebrid server is the way
Jenny Haniver 🦘Maybe people should just start reading books again
AlmiThe only thing to use ...
sanscuzzynone of these subscription services are adding any value for the increased costs. no new features or innovations for years
She57🇨🇦🍁I just hooked up my DVD player and take out movies at the library.
Mavericksoooo we have gone full circle back to playing pirates?
yup
BeugemysterI use stremio and real-debrid as a host CBF self hosting
_MunkeeI use one of the unofficial streaming sites (if you get my meaning), but it is sometimes quite annoying with network instability or high traffic times. This is a solid alternative. Thank you for sharing!
dcmprincepff if you live in the uk you have to pay £200 a year on top just to watch Netflix live events its a joke
ThatGuyMehoI know you said after you watch the software will delete but what if I want to keep some movies and shows
the autondelete is a setting of one of the apps, so just don't turn it on, and you too can become a data hoarder like me.
ThatGuyMehoI already am you just provided me with the solution I have been looking for
IslanderA laptop and Kodi is sufficient
Blackeyed78Just in time. Just got Spotify paragraph of we are adding 4€ to your monthly subscription. OMG
Sérgio BarbosaAdd a VPN there and you're golden 😅
Flip The Redcoatwhile I support putting the finger up to these price hikes. this video will be used as evidence when disney (most aggressive cease and desist) comes after you and sues you into financial oblivion and you end up in prison over it.
I doubt it.
_MunkeeActually, downloading isn't illegal. The worst thing you'll get is a threatening letter from your ISP, but legally, you can't be prosecuted. What is illegal is distribution. If you're actively sharing it online, you'll get in trouble.
Fujiwara driving academyI’m confused how does this help me watch live sports around the world?
Sportarr is the one to use for Sports
bdieobhw🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
🪬 ■ ■ ■ ■Plex with the arrs 👌 does TV, movies and Music. I also have custom software to download e and audio books and sync to kobo automatically
OldSparkyI remember the old days when the tv had two controls volume and chanel.
nlsf1337x
mehjust get a jacked firestick
Game Time Capsulejust get stremio, for windows android, tv whatever free to watch anime shows movies whatever up to 4k
First Name Last Namedo you also have videos on how to do shoplifting? specially where the prices have increased..omg
if I was that strong to life an entire shop, I'd earn a living with the traveling circus being the strong man.
RagthorI just have a 2TB hard drive plugged into the back of my TV..seems to work just fine. why do I need to buy all this stuff?
You don't need to buy anything, it's all free.
itsAlexcan this be made portable? eg, i can set one up at home and thake the other to work with me? also what if you dont have the best internet?
you would make your jellyfin or Plex accessable remotely, the rest just stays at your home.
Jimmy CrackCorn936I have a dvd/BR library of nearly 2k and buy movies to add to my collection when they are cheap. Not the latest but pay once no ads and not stealing content.
ThatsMrDrProfpatrick2uthis is incredibly complicated why not just buy $30-$50 android TV box and download some free TV streaming apps????? that’s what I’ve been doing for the last 5+ years I haven’t paid for TV
Mattyeah, this is going to go wayyyyy over most people's heads 🤣
novamaneGot a basic setup just need storage so I’m not limited by how many shows movies I can have
Mark BassettCould I just install these as LXC containers on my proxmox server?
yup
NekoCould do this with a Raspberry Pi?
maybe, as long as you direct play and don't transcode it should work.
thered19921999waste of time
Jesse....seriously..... but an android box. done and done
ALOr just use Kodi with real-debrid
Michael j fox jrIPTV . highly recommend
Anderson L. Thoméstremio
fantastic option.
C 🇨🇦My concern is the more self-hosting gets attention, Major streaming platforms will start to collaborate to take down these services or go after IP's to track traffic on the network.
possible but unlikely
Pokiblueif you download torrents i suggest using a VPN too
C 🇨🇦Always run a VPN 👍
solid advice.
King BrownToo much work to be lazy
Sarah
Craig barterIPTV. you're welcome.
loneRiderAt the end of the day, since you're using torrents, a copyright lawsuit is gonna hit your doorstep.
DkPlex doesn't have to be monthly payment you can buy a life time licence
DragonSlayer69Rrrrrrrrrrrr meharties
namekuseican we just gatekeep stremio a little bit more please?
Mario Lopezbro I pay for hbo, netflix, paramount, crunchyroll, disney + just about 60 usd a year. its not worth all the effort. I'd do it just for fun, not to save money
Ken Graff851$60 a year, spill it, how do you do that? Cause Disney alone is over $60. Tell so we can participate
HeperoProbably from a cheap country where the currency is not that strong
jrk1818Stremio + real debrid. $3/m. Google it. Trust me

fear_the_polar_bearFree media heck yeah is your friend. Google “free media heck yeah”
fear_the_polar_bear“We all HAVE to pay for” no. We don’t need to pay them
N üks NAnd thats ot
CI use a Dell 3060, the cheapo i3 with 12gb of ram is perfectly capable for running Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, Jackett, Plex, and Overseer in docker, and it can push out 3 4k steams, mine also hosts home assistant in a VM, as well as a few other small autoamtion programs.. Also, plex is NOT paid.. it is paid for premium apps you dont need.
nice setup and true.
Steve"A subscription we all HAVE to pay for" No we don't. We dont have to pay for video streaming. We could go for a walk down to the library and borrow a book.
OliverFree134
JPSHow does this work with let’s say live tv? I want to watch soccer and other sporting events. What would I use?
I did a video just recently that answers this just for you!
Thomas AndersenWhat’s with the “have to” part?
true.
SteveRage bait / engagement bait
Jubei KibagamiYou do not want to download something called Radarr and Sonarr. You don't want to download Jackett and Utorrent. This will get you all for free. ;)
Daemian Sterremaker
bikkywokpeople pay for streaming ??? 🤣🤣🤣
yup.. they do!
David VillarroelLONG LIFE TO CUEVANA!
David VillarroelThe first subscription I droped was Disney. Pay for publicity? No f**** Way!
Guido MüllerWow… what a waste of time
ShaunThe only subscription I pay for is Spotify, it's just easier then downloading all the weird songs I find. Tried setting up an arr stack and got completely lost; massive learning curve. I'll stick with win11 running qbittorrent and jellyfin server.
Shaunalso, torrenting has become much more difficult unless you have a private tracker, most of which are invite only.
🅃🄷🄴 🄶🄸🄶 🄿🄸🄶Amazon firestick with apps is good also
Johnny Walkerthey coming for stremio dude Android it got removed from play store
its still there for me.
How do you watch the content from the server from say my smart tv, over the network?
install the jellyfin app on the tv. this connects to the jellyfin server app on your computer and you're golden.
Thanks man!
goready21🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
blazeit's people like you that cause companies to start using AI in their productions. you do realize that services like Netflix have to pay for the rights for every new show they add
I don't think so.
blazethe more that people steal content the more that everyone else has to pay to make up the difference
well, put the prices back down, let us share accounts, stop pulling shows randomly, stop showing ads and like last time people will pay. When it's all a cessable and affordable, people will and do pay.
PaulSo when on prime you pay to "buy" a movie then a few months later prime deletes it but doesn't refund you and they say you didn't own...
blazeyou are buying the right to watch it from their library
sebasaezmOh my god don't be naive man. Are you seriously suggesting that services are increasing their prices because of people pirating them? Are you blind to how capitalism work?
PaulGreat then it should be refunded when they delete it as i no longer have that ability to watch it. Again they chose a business model that clearly doesn't work
that's a good point. if you pay, and it's removed you should be fully refunded the full cost.
PaulAlso that would be a rental deal not a purchase. They have both so which is it
blazeno it shouldn't you are paying for the privilege of not having to leave your home you are buying a service not a product
blazeit's not a rental because you have access for as long as the have the rights to the material. renting it only gives you the right for a set time
PaulNo i am buying the ability to watch a movie, if they remove my ability to watch that movie they have taken my money and stopped providing the service for which i paid.
blazeno you are buying the right to use their license to view the movie for as long as that license is valid you don't own the rights to the movie
PaulYou pay your internet provider for access to the internet, if the next day they block your ability to access 50% of it are you still getting what you paid for?
blazedepends on why they blocked it if you go against their terms and conditions you have broken your side of the contract forfeiting your money
DazzerlingJust like the old days when you’d go to a video store , pay for the privilege to watch it then have to return it the next day before 5pm and it had to be rewound.. Same principle just with technology..
PaulThats why they have a rent option, and i totally accept it for what it is, why call it buy when you aren't buying it though.
DazzerlingI am impressed with how companies and advertising have told us lies to get money out of us 😔
DazzerlingOhh and I can’t leave the media and big pharma out of it 😏
NopeLol 😂 that's not how any of this works 😂
blazeif you believe what you are saying you are an idiot
Liam Tielyeah but also i dont want to pay and gave ads... so i will pirate until prices are down again. if the conpanies are loosing money then the owner of the ip is asking too much and then someone needs to make a knock off. from a guy who is not wanting to pay more than $40 a month on subscriptions and dispise ads
LlewelynThere is a lot of research on piracy and its impact, your claim just isn’t true. Netflix made 11 billion dollars in profit last year… Their choice to use AI to cut costs is unjustified.
blazefake research to justify stealing
WhatajerkguyIts fine.. If they want to be competitive and not just a money grabbing company, then they could easily lower their prices. They had about $10 billion in earnings in 2025.. Earnings is after all operating costs. This means they pocketed 10 billion dollars...
blazedo you actually realize how much of a price difference there would be if they ran at no profit. it would be less than 50c a month
WhatajerkguyYou are bad at math. 10b in earnings, after all has been paid, in just 2025. there is only 300 ish million active subscribtions. Now devide 10 billion by 300 million. 😂 Maths is quite easy actually when you get the hang of it.
ɐʞʞnſTraffic on piratebay stopped bcs Netflix and spotify were so cheap. And they were only two streaming services ypu needet with less than 20€/month. now that every studio wants their own service to collect the money straight it's just like in the early 2000 and even 90's when we had to pay cable or satellite tv-channels to see that one show we like on each channel. That was what created Napster, piratebay and Limewire..
Scott Saville745then it's a good thing piracy isn't anything like traditional stealing since infinite copies of data be made at no cost to the original producer of said data.
Enitsoh nooo how will the billion dollar company survive, I guess they just have to can shows and use AI 🥺
GamerNerd2000yea so these days you pay for the right to watch a movie the same price you did nack when you BOUGHT the goddamn physical thing. 🙃👌
blazeyou clearly don't understand how inflation works money is worth less each year
JELine shareholder pockets more while people get fired.
KarzusI don’t think they ‘need’ 10 billion in difference. Sandman charted in the top ten for 10 weeks and was cancelled because of production costs. When it’s of of the FEW IPs that bought in new revenue for them in subs. They do not care about competition, consumers, performers or IPs. Profit is the bottom line and the cows they’re milking are on life support. I’m autistic, and morally ridged, so I can’t and won’t torrent; but don’t for one minute think you’ll see me out here licking the boot of the company sucking the soul out of the media industry. Do better.
AuraeThis seems so complicated 🫠
I have a full step by step guides on my Patreon just for you!
Michael Copusjust buy a fire stick
Tye WatsonI bought plex for life. 😁
His Majesty Holiness Pious llor DL put in n ur usb n watch 🤷🏻
also a very solid plan.
ᛗᛜᛜᚺ ᚹᏒᛊᛢᛊᚺᛈᛊjust use a VPN and search what you wanna watch?
Slamsoniteimpressive, now if only you can come by my place and set it up
lol. I'll be right there
Shiny gray fishSelf hosting is more expensive since you got to buy all the media, rip the media and you’ll still be outdated when new movies come out.
"buy" 😂
💀 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀I have not purchased a movie in nearly 15 years Literally one click online and I’ve downloaded it for free
tofu_pistoleroAdd portainer-ce to the mix and orchestration and maintenance will be a lot easier
or unraid.
Lazy DaysWhere do you get new content ?
use jellyseer or overseas 5o find what to download
KlintMarWhat about replacing google drive or apple photos?!?!
I've done a few videos on this, but time for another. Seafile, Nextdrive, immich are the ones I'd suggest.
..frame@@&$_corrup''dDo you understand you can simply buy android stream box and just install a single app instead? How many people you think can set everything u have shown here up? Like, seriously.
..frame@@&$_corrup''dAs for the money hungry streaming platforms... you did it to yourselves. Piracy is back.
everyone can.
The Mental SturgeonWait, are all of these downloads free? If so, how do the content producers make any money?
MadJohnyinstalled zimaos, jellyfin, and the arr stack. beautiful
mouzekillermeh,if you are smart you can watch all the streaming shit for free. because i am not THAT stupid to pay for any of that crap.
Hellome776I cancelled them all
user37392926653728Streamio is pretty good
very good.
user37392926653728But the moment that doesn’t work I’m all ears!
nice.
Eduardo Jesús Moragayou can put real debrid, much better..
DeeThe more people who do this the more they have to put their prices up for everyone else so yeah...thanks.
dionisismousourasYou're doing too much. Just download qbitorrent
Bob FlavinFantastic thank you 👌
🌙🌚✨SailorDoom✨🌚🌙I've never paid for a single one of those and never will. 😌
TT⁷The first rule of NZB club is...
tell everyone so we all have access and don't gate keep?
Ryan 🇦🇺Keep it bread crumb style not step by step. Otherwise it wil simply be shut down bro. Do you want it shut down?
I doubt my videos will get it shut down.. I don't have that power
neil allan269Is flaresolver still working. I tried to use it a few months ago and it says it’s down
still works fine for me
CrazyWladJellyfin Jellyfin, that's all there is to it.
RevNRecI got the same setup, I asked Gemini AI for step by step instructions with terminal instructions. Spend about 2 hours
I just did a video on my red app, that also steps you through it as well.
Mr. Veissor you get truenass where all that is installable with few clicks
or unraid, I did a video where I walk through every step, for you to follow along installing it all.
JeremyFor step one, can simplify that just getting a decent QNAP or Synology NAS. Can run your apps (Plex, Debian, Docker, whatever) and has the storage. I just use QNAP QGet app to send torrents to my NAS, then within mins they are download and ready to watch on Plex. And I manually delete directly in Plex after if I want. Automation comes with it's own overhead and complexities. If you're just starting out QNAP NAS + Plex is good easy place to start.
JeremyI think HBO Max was my last straw. Was happy getting Canal+ last year which combines also Apple TV and HBO. Now that HBO rebranded at HBO Max, it got pulled from my subscription and I'd need to pay another $15/month to get it back. Oh it has more content? Fuck the extra content, I just want the shows I was already watching and paying for back. So yeah I am now using Stremio. I'm happy to pay for reasonable service but this is beyond nonsense.
Gen X rule .First of all you don’t need lots of ram or a high end cpu . I am running Emby on a micro server dual core 1400 mhz that like 10 years old I using dietpi as os very light and my memory use stays under 1gb . 2nd Plex is ok but now have to pay to watch outside you network so I recommend Emby or you can run both . 3rd I just download movies and tv myself I wait until, the complete season is out then it’s just one download . On this setup I can stream 4k and share with others over internet no problem with cpu load or memory . Keep it simple to start with and add all that fancy stuff later . My setup runs months and months with no rebooting .
solid advice.
Gen X rule .Mind you I now looking at adding some of the extras you have running like the idea of it getting the content for me . Check out dietpi really easy to setup for people new to Linux or if anyone’s used a raspberry pi before you will be at home . Linux is amazing for not being a memory hog and unlike windows does not need rebooting all the time. With Emby harder to share outside of your network as need static IP or a redirect service I use noip and my router updates the service when it changes .
Chris CiliaNZB’s require a subscription as well…this system is good if you’re a file hoarder
yup, I did a full video when we set the whole system up, with guides if you're interested.
Chris CiliaI need some good NZB’s if you have any invites 😊
if you go to my YouTube, I have a video up with some info on a give away I have for just that sort of thung
Khalid Z NI have an external 8tb hdd and honestly wish I could use it as backup instead of Google drive. everyone be say use Synology but I don't want to jump from one subscription to another ..
totally understandable, get a Raspberry pi, and connect it to that, then install casaos and you're good to go.
Khalid Z NI'll be home in 9 hours and I will check this.. I actually have a raspberry pi chilling on a shelf for years ! thank you
I'm my profile/playlist "replace Netflix" the first video goes through setting up a pi with casaos, that may help.
Zayn - リック(力久)Unraid is much easier OS to use
very much agree
Antonio ChettyCrunchyroll has been the same cost for over a decade
Marcyhow to save money on streaming step 1: play video games
Fr0thgar 🇩🇰is Ubuntu valid as an alternative to Debian? I've started this process on a Lenovo m700 refurb
absolutely
Brendan Green | AutomateI want to do this. Can you do a complete build on YT???
yes I can.
Alan 🇮🇪I've just stopped. I refuse to pay for ANYTHING other than my phone which is an unlimited plan for €10. I am slowly buying my favorite cd's and movies
totally agree with that philosophy.
NeutronWe do not have to.
TherealjackbeeKayo? Still searching for a way to replace this!!
sports are you g to be hard.
Cuixsupernatural is on prime now but it's not free, it costs over 20 dollars to watch literally just a single season
MaybeChupapiim doing this soon actually
nice
Abar SimorghDon't you have to interfere with the subtitles if for example the movie is 24 fps but the subs are in 23.976 or vice versa? @BenjaminSPowell
sometimes, but not always.
️Where do I get these movies?
DaSlothosubscription? whats that🤣🤣🤣
Something someone told me about... a long long time ago
DaSlotho😉
Tofucan I have an unraid setup of this
Tofututorial
so I just rebuilt a server and plan on moving all the apps over I to the new served so yes, 100% you can
Tofusweet! I assume It won’t affect the files already on the unraid server
Sick SockerAnd the risk of downloading a virus is massive….
stupid bitch🏴☠️
NolanI think you have made other videos including it but do you have like something to inspect the file before saving it like a quarantine? Then do you use something to auto transcode to save on storage space?
gulag.officialeveryone says torrending but the real ones are using usenet 👍💪
AK21 ☭And so the second big age of piracy began !
LoneOrcoWhy’s the rum gone? Savy?
Yonko276200$ is my yearly cost for the subscriptions
bobessentially search for SFF mini PC, don't buy anything older than an i5 7500 as older models have more limited hardware transcoding options and I'd recommend jumping up to at least a. 8500 as it's got 6 cores instead of 4. if your budget allows for something newer then great, but you might also want to consider ram/storage upgraded instead, linux has pretty low resource usage and these little machines can handle a surprising amount.
JonathanYeahhh I’m a just pay for what I want and not deal with that convoluted mess
motorollerAre there ‘Free’ streaming services without this diy solution ?
Stremio is one option and very good
Bajulayoull still need to "own" those movies on your server unles youre a pirate.
Kirk Nicholson😁😁😁
little lauchieGreat video!
KevinI recommend replacing flaresolverr with byparr
M. Scotoh and I thought it was going to be difficult
DA4Mate, if you can tell me how to get Kayo sports you will be goateed

observer1234560same
Jake The FabricatorAll the other stuff are services to get media from the net to your plex media storage automated and organized. Paying for plex, aside from some unnecessary bells and whistles, mainly allows for remote access for you and potentially friends/family.
BijunoOh, beautiful! So I can save a little time searching for them manually. I don’t think I would pay Plex but the other stuff sounds good
Steve BlankI refuse to pay for television. I watch free2air, I buy DVDs from my op shop for $1-$2, and if needed, I'll search the deep web for any special movie I require. The internet goes waaaaaay beyond G00g13😌 "If buying isn't owning..."

if you're behing a cgnat then you can't port forward to manage egress/ingress.
Diego VitielloDidn't think of that, where I live no ISP limits port forwarding (that I know). Especially since you would be forwarding only 80 and 443
if only the rest of us were so lucky!
dark-wood-duckHow much does your time cost? Updating this amount of software, maintaining the configurations and ensuring the system doesn’t crash is gonna take a couple of hours a month minimum - for me that’s over $300 of time, which suddenly makes the subscriptions more palatable by far. Also quality on subscriptions is guaranteed… this stuff isn’t.
I'd spend say 10-20 min a month managing this.
PandaabearQuality is usually *better*, not worse. Less compression.
johndoe77798is all automatic, no time no money
dark-wood-duckKubernetes / Docker is not automatic, Linux is not Automatic, Dell Firmware / Drivers are not automatic - for the applications / config I’d say they may gave automatic options. Scheduling all of this will be the biggest challenge.
dark-wood-duckExcept the movies / series that are badly pirated and have poor sound sync or other fun challenges. I was more referring to a standard level of quality that doesn’t change.
dark-wood-duckInteresting, how about we agree on 30mins as you’re actually running the set-up and have knowledge I don’t but I’ve got 30yrs of IT Infrastructure experience so it’ll probably only take me an extra 10mins. That’s still $100 of my time. What’s the run cost of the Optiplex? I know it seems like I’m going in on this but the other services you mention cost about $4 a month, electricity isn’t free so let’s say $3, the hardware spread over 3yrs (could last longer) is about $5 a month, and then the time to install this spread over 3yrs because we reinstall after hardware replacement (at 6hrs est is $1200 OTC for me) is $35 a month. So adding these numbers up I’m coming up with a TCO of $147 a month.
dark-wood-duckAlso for a novice these times will be much higher than for you or me, so time cost goes up, but they may not be paid as much as me so I think it’s a reasonable assumption that costs will fix at around that amount.
Chris Gardinermost people don't make $100 for 30 minutes of work. second hand servers and storage are relatively cheap. a lot of people do this as part of their hobby so that time spent learning and setting up isn't considered wasted time. You don't need to replace the machine every few years, media streaming isn't very demanding on hardware unless you're doing 4k encoding, I've seen kids run Plex on their old android phones with surprisingly good results, and if you have a raspberry-pi you can use that. In the UK streaming services start at around £5/6 with Advertising. It's roughly double if you want the "advertising free experience" which as you can imagine adds up very quickly. My server set-up requires next to no maintenance other than the odd update. It would cost roughly £5 a month to run on full power draw, but it never actually pulls that so it's closer to £2 a month. The server/Nas can also be used for photo backups and other things so you can add other savings into the mix as well.
dark-wood-duckDon’t disagree with much you’ve said, and I said the h/w could last longer but generally no more than 5yrs before security support runs out. My wages are high, I know, but also I can probably do this stuff 10x faster than most people (the 30yrs exp in IT Infrastructure accounts for both those things). In all honesty I’m just trying to point out for a certain wage bracket / experience level this is not really a worthwhile option - if you enjoy playing with tech and aren’t worried about time spent then this is definitely the way forward. But in terms of TCO it’s not quite as cheap as presented.
PandaabearBut.. that rarely ever happens nowadays? Unless you deliberately download Cam versions or never read comments. Like, the amount of time it takes to start seeing the trust worthy uploaders/pirate groups is.. so incredibly small now because majority of them produces good quality now.
dark-wood-duckYour auto-download tools aren’t likely to read comments, maybe they have some AI capabilities but on this h/w they won’t be able to do much. For new movies it still happens regularly.
dark-wood-duck@BenjaminSPowell - I want to make it clear I like the content, and for a lot of people this will be fun and interesting. I just want to highlight there are costs that are inherent in any infrastructure you run, maintenance, configuration, security and hardware replacement.
Chris GardinerThat's fair, the upfront cost isn't exactly desirable. Assuming you're not using windows, Linux rarely goes out of support due to ageing hardware, that's generally a windows server issue which is an absolute headache as you find yourself having to replace a lot of hardware all at once.. I've had a lot of success running truenas, the software raid is surprisingly good and everything else is really intuitive, I don't even think I've even had to access the terminal as it's all managed by the middleware. Definitely worth checking out if you ever consider looking into it, you can even connect it to your windows domain making backups and storage management a bit easier.
dark-wood-duckUpdates and security fixes for firmware / BIOS / Drivers will stop when the manufacturer deems the HW end of support - regardless of OS. Your server will be on your local network, and constantly attached to the internet, so unless you want to create an awesome jump point into your network for a hacker changing the HW when it’s EoS is a necessary evil.
Chris GardinerYeah that's a fair point, though those exploits are rare and usually physical attacks. I'd argue for hobby/home use it's not really an issue unless you've opened all the ports on your router and disabled the Linux firewall, in which case you're asking for problems. Linux is generally pretty safe updates are frequent even on really old hardware. HW released in the 1970s still gets driver updates which is honestly insane.. Still valid points with the bios and vulnerabilities like spectre, meltdown and old WiFi modules. What sort of sector do you work in, is it consulting?
ShrikeIt’s not “constantly attached” there are zero ponts of entry from the outside.
ShrikeThe Scene (IYKYK) has had naming conventions for 30 years for a reason.
ShrikeI’ve had a server running at home for 27 years and I’ve had to update drivers like once (Linux didn’t support my specific network card) and BIOS zero times. You’re overcomplicating things way too much 😁
dark-wood-duckYour “server” has more security holes than Swiss cheese.
dark-wood-duckYes there are good sources out there but to be honest naming conventions are only as good as the people who use them.
dark-wood-duckSo there are hundreds of exploitations out there for machines that connect to pirate sites… but why worry, it’s not constantly connected (until the exploit attaches it to a ransomware site). Also almost all these tools install as root.
ShrikeI’m not “connecting to pirate sites”. I’m downloading a .nzb or a .torrent file and sending that to my client. There are no exploits for either. Your concept of “piracy” is not very advanced. These tools have been fully automated for over a decade
ShrikeAlso none of them get root access, they live in rootless containers and get access to very specific locations on the NAS
ShrikeWhy would it? And if it does what’s the problem, you can’t access it unless you’re already inside my network.
dark-wood-duckSo while you feel your server is safe because .torrent & .nzb files aren’t executable as they’re metadata, the server still executes the download of the content which can be executable. The most common form of which is an executable file disguised as a video file.
dark-wood-duckIf you install docker correctly preventing root access then yes, however they have root access within the container and it has access to your network, also there are well proven ways to break out from a container without security monitoring implemented.
dark-wood-duckBecause the security flaws in an ancient BIOS can’t be patched at an OS level, and again your server is connecting to multiple sites on the internet that can have dodgy payloads, if these are malicious your ancient server is the perfect playground for ransomware, viruses and the like because of it’s poor security.
Anton Idontknowif your 2 hours cost 300$, just stop watching the movies
ShrikeHow? The amount of very specific things that has to happen for someone to take advantage of a BIOS bug on my server is astronomical 😂
ShrikeAgain, that would require a very very specific targeted attack at a bug that has never yet existed. You’d somehow have to give either a malicious search result to sonarr or craft a torrent file that would break whatever torrent client there is. There are ZERO cases of either ever happening. You’re just irrationally scared of things.
ShrikeNo? The server doesn’t “execute” anything. It’s not double clicking shit in explorer.exe ya spanner. It’s using ffmpeg to open the video file, which won’t work if it’s a binary executable. And there haven’t been major CVEs in ffmpeg in a long time, at worst you could crash it and MAYBE do a RCE but nobody has managed to yet. CVE-2025-1594 was close but again, very very specific things had to happen for that to be viable. Your threat model is WEIRD
dark-wood-duckYes, that must be it.
dark-wood-duckYes, you’re right, the chances of an ancient server with poor security patching being hacked are astronomical.
dark-wood-duck😂
TheTGEi2 🇦🇺This was true a few years ago, but with the fragmentation, price increases, ads in the lower tiers, and general enshitification of streaming due to corporate greed, this little bit of extra effort is worth it.

VidgetClose. Jellyfin is a fork of Emby, it's missing a lot of good stuff that was made after the fork.

bertoI'm pretty sure that the gov (UK) wants to make you a criminal for using any kind of VPN in the near future. Considering you can get police visits just for writing something a bit mean on the internet then this is like waving a massive "Eff Me" flag in front of a police station.

sujargmineissiOr just hear me out. Use some sites like hurawatch, hdtoday etc and u have everything available online so you dont have to download stuff....
Bronze 2 💪😏 ⚽️🏎️✨Websites often get take down, and the quality is often subpar with nothing more than 1080p. Also some sites can be slow. Having a homelab has some perks, everything you watch or plan to watch is physically present in your drives, you can watch anything even when the internet is down, plex and jellyfin work just fine on your local network. You can watch anything 4k, blueray, hdr10+. It will do justice to your 4k smart tv if you like high quality video. The bitrate is very high, so 4k is real 4k, not the compressed low bitrate garbage you get even with Netflix and YouTube. Also it’s nice to build a personal library, a collection of your favourite shows and films, having it all neatly organised at home. You actually own something, you’re not borrowing media from a free streaming site, you’re not renting it from Netflix and Disney. This last point is purely subjective though, and for every point I made I understand that it might not be worth the trouble for everyone.
sujargmineissiYeah its not worth it and i usually watch my stuff from computer not tv so hd quality is good enough, we talking about free movies....

T0B1Tbut isn't that still illegal?
SebastianStremio + Real Debrid no hardware needed, no storage. install on any TV or Android box. that's it
qoiuevAhhh piracy wins again
user4205374103077please don't make it more easy for "normies" to pirate because it hurts the pirate scene more in the long run. just look at the piracy&emulator scene for Nintendo switch.
sindegaArrr ayyee pirat. Still living on the torrent seas
bullet_remedyNewsgroups and binaries are still king
bullet_remedyJust NAS and Kodi! Over 11k in movies alone! Imagine my TV collection!

Anton IdontknowBUY? what is it? is it contagious?
drrelax73Eat and read?
midocan you use realdeprid or similar service
arikaelastreamsI want to do this but I'm too lazy
nickWhat white board app is this?
this is quickmap its a chrome plugin I built, and open sourced for everyone. you can get it in the chrome store free of on my github
BjörnBróðiror just use the free streaming service which is Stremio. Though I'm already doing the "has 7tb of media on a portable harddrive and DVD's" which will eventually get turned into something like a jellyfin server.
hussi stream illegaly for pas 20 years. benefits in living my country

Jimmy BYeah so on we will cut this just like we cut cable.

teecisTailscale instead of your suggested tunnel
jereme"have to pay for" is exactly the problem. they will continue to raise prices regularly until people stop paying them money.
MalikCan I use my PC as the server?
yes you can.
Malik
MatthewCould you please do a step by step on how to setup docker and install them all ? I’ve tried following your last guide, but unfortunately flaresolverr is not available for Mac, however it is for docker but I can’t get my head around how to setup up docker 💁🤨
yup, can.
edwardCactusrecently replaced my home lab with a bunch of nucs as proxmox nodes love the mini pcs
edwardCactusalso didn't forget about jellyseer!
thechrisanityWatch the power consumption though. Those old optiplexes, and spinning hard drives will cost the same as a few streaming services if you aren't tweaking them.
H I I H A yHey quick question. I have a amateur home theater, meaning i need 4k HDR dolby digital plus with dolby atmos in a high bitrate. Can i get such quality? I always imagine this wouldnt work with media server, would it? I could get MUCH MUCH better quality and birate for movies out of blue rays compared to streaming, but i dont wanna pay 20€ for a blue ray to watch it once. I could rip it and return it but ripping and storing these big files would cost as much as buying them and storing them. And ideas?
ChewieBruh. Why all this route
Mariola ★my dad has been recording movies from tv getting rid of the ads and saving them for years, he has so many movies
Bierbergjust buy a mini pc with windows installed, set up Jellyfin server, plug in some external hard drives and your good, easy pc, set up maybe 15 to 20 min, no need for Linux (though its nice and should be used, it can get very technical, very fast), Docker and so on. Keep it simple, don't complicate things, especially for non technical people because you also need to maintain this and adding docker and other side steps is just going to make things more complicated in the long run.
Bierbergoh and use Tailscale for accessing the content from your Jellyfin server. Jellyfin has an app. Tailscale makes it super easy to access it. it has free tier, 10 users and I haven't bumped into usage limits yet.
Bierbergand this all doesn't cost anything per year, absolutely free.
Eduardo Estevaneor just buy a cheap domain and use cloudflare to funnel you localhost to the domain and it'll do the same as tailsacle and you have a person domain and you can access it from anywhere and you don't have to install tailsacle in all of your devices
BierbergYea, or that, except, again, this is already technical and not for everyone. What I mentioned here above is the bare minimum of technical knowledge to set up.
drewtnfk3daJust did this and it’s dope. Only wish I had 1Gbps upload to stream in 4k
Eduardo EstevaneI don't think it matters if you do have a 1gb upload if the movies you upload aren't 4k you won't see them in 4k
drewtnfk3daThey are in 4k
RonnieI have jellyfin on my PC and I stream to my phone. but what I can't figure out is how to get content in the first place
BierbergqBittorrent to download, YTS and EZTV for content, but of course, only download content that is free to download, not copyrighted 🙄
Ronnieyeah I just heard that a VPN isn't enough to protect me if I "accidentally" click on copyrighted content torrents but thanks for the program suggestions
BierbergTorguard VPN and a dedicated IP
Gen X rule .I could not get jellyfin to work really wanted that . I using Plex and Emby .
Strife
Strifedamn. I didn't know that. what do you use?

softlyproblematiconce its above 20 i dont need it no more
Riadh Naceur235i never paid to watch anything... why not just torrent your media ??????
RhysNgl this sounds like alot to manage. You could just install truenas and get a similar experience on one box as it has ways to put plex and jellyfin on it as well as apps and stuff for everything else
IgorDon’t so much service. Just use Netlifx, hbo (soon to be Netflix), and Apple+. And you unsubscribe from some of them when you don’t need it and subscribe when something interesting is released
Zinguidwould you not have an malware scanner as part of that just to be safe with the torrents? early days of torrenting I used to get loads of malware.

Fabsn 👌🏼How do integrate a VPN Into it for the torrents? Since they are a bit risky for legal reasons
ArkieCan’t I just connect to your server and pay you…?
MaxDo you have a tutorial on how to do this? Cause this seems like something I would want to do. Already have an older gaming pc that already has Ubuntu. But a step by step tutorial would be amazing

Chalky🔰Can anyone recommend a good hard drive enclosure. I’m using truenas and it’s not enjoying mine rn because it uses a single USB
Synology, zima both good options.
MoreOnRealDebrid+torrentio+stremio=happy life 😎😎 will delete comment soon 😂😂👀👀
Blackdeath4447people always say plex is expensive and/or paid subscription. plex has a free version and ofcourse monthly but the lifetime subscription is often on offer for around £100 with no further costs. more options for consideration 👍
skvillado not pay
OrangesoapYou really don’t have to do this nonsense, just use websites like “movieboxpro” it has every movie and tv show and all the latest! It has a subscription of £20 a year or free. It has all these subscriptions in one so just use the websites.
kamadojoeroenYou don’t have to pay for Plex if you don’t need to stream content outside of your home network and/or transcoding.
Adster13i did this in the past writing to a Business Google account for cheap storage, let all the family have profiles until Google stoped the unlimited storage 😅. Had about 40TB that was lost. Only use other streaming apps now, cheaper and nothing to maintain.
James DudeCan you watch live UK football
seebiieepiracy i pay nothing for music watching shows movies cloud storage and games
N Nhonest question: why would i have to download anything. there are enough free streaming sites, What's the problem with just watching stuff online?
PedroI just use pirate sites for movies, shows, and anime
KingSlimomg god just go to Google Nd type gojara Nd stream every movie and TV series ever made
MirceaThankfully there are still some closed loop tracker based websites. Ehy not pirate on the clasic way, direct download, project screen on your TV from pc or laptop and voila
Maartencertynok let's shorten this video guys download the brave browser ( no ads bla bla bla) look for movies 7 or 7 movies the site boom there are tons of other sites aswell wanna watch it on TV plug in an hdmi and boom
Dr. Sserunjogi EmmaJust use zodflix.com it's free and has everything found on those
Maartencertynyou guys are paying?

JúliusaCaesaryou say buy server , nas and then apps and install but where are you installing those apps and how
I've got a playlist in my bio called replace Netflix that steps you through it all
Mac MiadhacháinI just use Stremio on my TV with Real Debrid and Simkl
solid choice.

Mac MiadhacháinEasy, cheap and works.

RBro please turn on download for this vid
ok I did, not sure what that will do, but I did it, just for you. :)
cuppyIsn’t it illegal to do this? So aren’t you basically telling people to stop paying for streaming and download stuff from news servers or torrent sites?
yup and yup.
cuppy😜 Mad props then. Where do you stand on media players like a roku or apple tv and standard default formats like aac stereo and 8bit vs 10bit video? I have issues with playback where stuff is ever so slighty jerky. I have reencoded my entire library to stereo and 8 bit video.
not an apple tv fan, but I think Plex runs on it, that may help. but I don't really know more than that to be honest. roku tv as well, not really sure, but if the device is transcoding then that may be the issue. sorry I can't help more.
Mrcarlosmtiktoksh_MeRoboDiberoIsn’t it illegal for trump to grape girls? Lake Michigan, search it

KvngtsarThere’s no such thing as illegality
ElbuortGlad I stumbled across this Thank you😊
Bob RossIf buying isn’t owning, piracy isn’t stealing
cuppyInfuse is paid. Would rather just write my own
xyzzyxIf buying isnt owning, then piracy isnt stealing. If buying content was an option, piracy wouldnt be so popular. Its quality of service issue.
BrenI mean if $12 a year is that important 🤷♂️
Little RichardAnd? 😎
cuppyAnd?
Gradientyes, but technically no, you could cut out most of it, keep plex or jellyfish, rip/burned you're own media as to preserve it and have grey area netflix.
ShrikeIt’s a gray area depending on your country. In some places downloading is ok, sharing (uploading) is not.

chifipitiyI thought flaar solver got taken down? did someone else start maintaining it?
ircmasterI recently found a nice iptv provider for watching live sports. I recommend it if you watch a lot of sports, there are lots of options I found through simple google searches and tbh it’s worth trying a few of them out before settling. It’s usually $15-$20 a month for thousands of channels and a single device (I use my PC and chromecast to my TV)

JHK No AKACan I still use Pangolin and Rack nerd even if port forwarding is not an available option ?
yup, that's 100% the usecase :)
Pradd bitTried gettin jellyfin to work and it just wouldn’t. I could get it to work on pc but the mobile app just refused to work. So if I was gonna do this I’d look at plex instead
Plex has a free option that is perfectly good enough.
Pradd bitAmazing. I’ll definitely look into it 🙏🙏
FoxyAurora🇬🇧Mobile app needs to be on the same network. If you are using something like tailscale a free mesh VPN (connects you devices over vpn rather than traditional vpn to make them seem like they are on the same network) you need to make sure to use the Tailscale IP for the host device and dont forget the port. like 192.168.0.1:8080 or what ever it is.
Pradd bitYeah I tried literally everything including tailscale. It just is what it is 😭😭
PROJECT-BLUEEmby is a great alternative
PROJECT-BLUEnot true at all
adampaladinYou can also use Stemio with Real Debrid
and it works great
.Why complain when you can just pirate it
dan_Phew . Luckily I’m staying in Asia. What’s paying for sub ? 🤣
DrathnoelI kept Spotify and for movies and TV use stermio
BuffOf course it’s all about the money buddy. If it’s not a probable year for these big companies it’s not a good year.
pluto😁😁😁
Angel0 subscriptions (other than water, gas internet and electricity)
well, if we could pirate that too.. we would.
AngelI mean… electricity and internet is doable… water and gas a bit more difficult
the_monolith_And your rent/mortgage, car lease, car insurance, cellular service, bank fees, maybe some membership fees. You can’t escape subscriptions.

abnzb or nzbgeek are good
Throwaway292Thanks for the response. Do you have a video on how to explain how this works? I’m using torrents on a synology drive but I’m tired of low seeds and such. Would much rather have this working
Olajide ParisWe don’t “have to” pay for the stuff, these are not necessary for survival or anything like that.

BarryPiracy to the rescue.
ontheroxieThe real problem here is storage. There will be more and more content, and you will need much more space. More and more.
Unsolicited opinion giveri use windows mini pc for jellyfin, work like a charm for my linux laptop

JHK No AKAwill Racknernd works even if port forwarding is not available on my ISP Modem?
rokoko784None of them are worth their money. I know, we changed to be part of it if we watch every new series/film. But there are much more important things to do in life 😅 Friends of mine bought DVDs now :D but I don’t use any of these streamers anymore. Not worth their money

mastodonj_veganIsn't a zimacube like a grand or something? Why say the dell price but not the zimacube?
d&niDon't forget Immich so you don't have to pay for google one/icloud
mythos493Imma be honest with you, I’m too lazy for that. I’ll just pay the $8 a month for Netflix and use my free ad blocker
noneofyourbusinessyou don't have to pay for it, just ignore it
Mirage PresentIt’s not cheaper if you get all that content legally and stream it with the setup you’re suggesting
Vinicius CastroI guess it's a different approach. Getting the content legally, via download or just buying the physical media and doing this process is building your library. We, today, don't actually own any of this contents.
Apple User664963You can do this a lot cheaper, paying more just means it’s more future proof
Collegiate OBFCThe best time to start withholding your money from these companies was years ago. The 2nd best time is now. You don't need to be giving them your money. Just do without

Xochi098How hard is it to just download everything from these streaming companies to a private server and keep it lol?
RobinIs there an easier option
stremio
PapaBear2030So complicated. Everything after Plex/Jellyfin is overkill made for homelab enthusiasts. You can just have old PC that serves proxmox and Plex/Jelly or Emby. Why not mentioning Emby?
Francesco Di MaggioCommenting to stay on this side of TikTok

Potatothis is kinda why I am building my own service.
Potatobut larger scale. 20x20tb
Pixelplex has a free option too?
yes, but I get so many comments when I mention Plex, I just default to saying it's paid
Pixelah, makes sense. I use Plex because Samsungs OS (at least in my country) doesn't have an app for Jellyfin, and I don't feel like jailbreaking my TV

jpvsocYes. Yes.
jpvsocDoesn't make it any less illegal.
ElSegundoit's only illegal if they can track your packets. if paying isn't owning, puk them
jpvsocKilling a person is murder even "if they don't track you". Stealing content is still stealing. You may choose to do so but it doesn't make it any bit more legal.
TwavadoIt's not getting more expensive for no reason 👀 The reason is just not a very good one: greed 😅

J U D EThis is great! Do you mind doing a full video tutorial that covers all so that we can watch and follow steps? 😊
kennypowersofficialhow are you hiding your torrent traffic from your ISP? (Im an idiot)
leoAmazing setup! For someone wanting something more "beginner friendly" I'd say just get a cheap used pre built NAS+Drives, I only run Jellyfin and Tailscale VPN via Package Manager. Thats all, takes like 20min of setup and you got everything you need. I paid 600€ for a Pro grade 4 bay Synology with 48TB of WD Red (under 3000 hours in S.M.A.R.T.)
Observerat this rate, I'm just gonna watch shows on TikTok.
gyhcggfcccfActing like those services arent expanding their content year on year is just disingenuous
