JDTThe one thing I have encountered with de-Googling is that while I have found alternatives for email, office, and most tools I use, the phone situation is limiting. This means finding a good app store, maps, and contacts that work properly is a challenge.

BrettSo another big recommendation I could suggest is using Addy.io its supports a ton of aliases per domain, PGP email encryption, and distribution of email to multiple recipients. If an alias is sold or starts receiving spam you just turn it off. Hella cheap!

BrettDefinitely is the best money I’ve ever spent. Open source and you can host your own for free instead of paying. Feel free to DM me if you want more details. And I can make a video about mine since I’m signed up and using it and send that over too.
BrettOne important thing is it’s not a mailbox service. It’s a forwarding service so you can have a Gmail account and setup your domain MX records and other records and send email to foo@domain.com and it will forward that to your Gmail. No need for Google workspace.

I like when I take a picture of my Android and it uploads directly to my Google drive does proton have a function like that or maybe some other web service have a function like that? so I get the best of both worlds convenience with my pictures and privacy? thanks for all your great info

I use proton unlimited, have for awhile I still haven't gone through changing every single one of my passwords it's alot of effort lol . proton is still definitely developing the rest of their services still, especially Linux ones. . proton drive I wish I could get more storage without needing duo or family . the VPN, I love, easy to use simple works great

itsrdhI don’t like proton because it’s not proper email. They’re doing their own thing that isn’t smtp. They WILL downgrade to smtp if you email outside of proton, but then you lose the privacy benefits, and I don’t think people understand that.

LG and LilyOverall good advice however one thing on this is is if you “sign out and don’t go back” Google will delete your email after about 3-6 months of inactivity as of like 2024 or something. (Only if it’s free, if you pay for Google one or Gsuite/workspace then your email is “safe”)

BrianThere’s also the issue of everyone else in the world that still uses Gmail. It’s so pervasive that odds are you frequently need to email someone with a Gmail account. Or you’re in threads with others who are. In these cases, your email content still feeds the Google machine, even if you yourself have weaned off of it.
