As a home labber, you’re probably running multiple devices and desktops, but accessing them can be a pain—especially if they’re spread across Windows, macOS, and Linux. There are tools like #TeamViewer and #AnyDesk , but they’re not self-hostable. Let’s install #RustDesk . It’s a free, open-source relay and server tool you can run on your home lab. It uses your local network speed to connect and manage all your desktops, no matter the operating system. Just be aware: if you’re behind #CG -NAT, you’ll need to use RustDesk’s free public relay to connect outside your network. If you can port forward, running your own relay server is a great option.

Sebastian KlingkUnraid -> VM -> Tailscale -> finished
for personal access easy as, but sharing out becomes a pain.
BLACKDEATH 2552sunshine and moonlight are another great option too
DavidI’ve been using parsec for free!
Doesn't Parsec have a monthly subscription though?
DavidThere is a free personal use tier, it’s in a category like Tailscale for me where I’d like to replace it with something local and open source at some point but it’s so easy to set up and it just works so as long as it’s free I’m going to use it.
DavidAn iOS app would be cool tho
Robert Mitchellyou seem to be my go to guy from home labbing, my new hobbies 🤭. i followed your Netflix replacement, which so far is going well, might explore jellyfish though. however are you or have you made a video on replacing Spotify? 🤞
I did cover Nicotine+ which is a bit of a Spotify replacement, and you can use plex AMP as the player, but its not awesome an experience though.
TripledropI just use Lidarr (like sonarr or radarr but for music), with plexamp
Is lidarr working again?
TripledropI only installed it last week, and it's worked fine for me.. been upgrading all my music to lossless!
The bullet in the gunI like it, but the video quality is abysmal. Especially if you use a console and it ever scrolls
Yeah, not really the best for gaming if that's what you're talking about.
Yeah not great for gaming, you would want to use midnight and starlight for that, or the remote one from Stream.
viral.agentDoes it handle login to the user if logged out?
Yes.
wonder_shartCan I run the relay inside the server I’m remoting into? That’s my biggest regret of moving to Linux. Couldn’t get VNC anything to work for some reason and gave up. Wondering if this will be easier
wonder_shartUsed to windows app/Remote Desktop into what was my windows home server (Just locally). It was very convenient, accessing any of my systems from any of my other systems (I’ve collected like 5 that I use regularly for diff things)
Yes! Rust desk works in Linux. Also works on Android too, so remote into a phone!
Same, but I like one tool to rule them all!
wonder_shartNice! I’ll try throwing up a docker container and get some sort of Remote Desktop inception going 😂
It works great but when you have other operating systems it can get sketchy.
NoFate301mesh central is a decent option
I'll take a look
mochiTHANK YOU this is one of my personal labs I want to do
Nice! Hope it works easy for you :)
Best of luck
mochithanks man
TimmmeeehhhI use this and did not know about the relay server. Never set anything up and it works fine. Does it use the localhost as a relay server by default?.. i can also access it from outside, i didn’t open ports for it.
If you don't set up the relay server then it defaults to using the free Rustdesk public ones. So internal and external access is not an issue. This is just to not rely on public servers is all.
TimmmeeehhhGood to know! Rather run my own, so if this is a possibility then will set this up. Thanks for the tip!
Hope it goes well!
BasenjiHow do you stop the key from changing when the unraid server restarts?
It's generated on install, not on start so yiu should be fine.
BigGreek19Could you use the Cloudflare tunnel to use this rather than opening ports in your network?
Cloudflare doesn't support the TCP unfortunately, so you could host this on a vps somewhere, port forward, use the Rustdesk free relay or tailscale.
Joelcloudflare works fine for RDP, there are a few ways to do it, 0 port forwarding. Super nice in corporate as you can link it to entra. https://developers.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-one/networks/connectors/cloudflare-tunnel/use-cases/rdp/
ronin.513I just installed rustdesk like an hour ago lol, great minds 🤝
Hahaha ha, awesome! I moved to it recently just because I was tired of different systems for mac and Windows and so on. Also I can sideload it onto an Android phone too I belive and remote into that!
Donkkiiwithin family members, install tailscale on source and target, then configure those built-in windows RDP or Mac vnc
Yeah, can do that, for non technical. Family, this is far easier to sort out.
