The last few weeks I've been testing out different operating systems such as #Zima, #hexos #truenas, #Ubuntu, open media vault, #unraid and Proxmox and I have been trying to work out what is the right one for my little optiplex I bought off Facebook Marketplace. In this video I will give my final conclusion on what Hardware to use for what operating system. My choice was to go with Zima with an external hard drive.

Ionut CristianWhich one would you recommend for a 2008-ish era PC, Zima or OMV ? I was also thinking on going full debian with it, but i want to know if Zima or OMV can outperform it in certain areas.
ConfigFixCant find Omv breakdown vid
oh, not sure why it wasn't in the playlist, I've added it now.
CrispyBiteClubDont know why, but i love proxmox. I have a mini pc with i5 10500 and 32gb ram, i create linux vms and delete them when done with trying something and create new one. Also i have the typical tools others have too as lxc.
زاخرAs a noob I’d install ubuntu in all of them and use coolify to connect the other servers via ssh. Is that equivalent to what you did or do you get more capabilities doing it your way?
BrookeI built mine out of a miniITX setup running proxmox with primrily opnsense and now that’s my router. Between vms i have the equivalent of a 40 gbps network and the rest of the lan is handled by a 10g sfpp card. My ISP only offers up to gigabit but my home network is capable of 2.5 to the desktop. Also running pihole after i was served an ad for ice.
Grant DerridgeI would only do promox, even for a single server setup. It is far superior when it comes to backup/restore when compared to the other solutions. Especially when you get into PBS. Maybe it's because I have been using it for years now, but the simplicity of deploying LXC's with community helper scripts, wipes the floor with the other OS's
The key there is you've been on it for years, for beginners Proxmox can be a little intimidating
Grant Derridgehttps://community-scripts.github.io/ProxmoxVE/scripts This covers all the core apps you could just about want in a homelab, and deployment/updating is as easy as copying and pasting into the pve shell. Backup and restoring to an external source is really quite simple too. Plenty of how to guides out there, or like anything these days just ask GPT or Gemini to give you the solution.
Keikeoman every time I watch one of your videos or anyone else's on homelabs, I get overwhelmed. I'm trying to get into it, just literally as brand new as you can get lolol
Thats understandable, it can feel like there is a lot to learn. I would say start with something simple like a raspberry pi running pihole. Easy.
ColtI’d recommend too, if you’re thinking of doing a Proxmox cluster. Do at least 3 for quorum or do 2 main devices and throw in a Raspberry pi. Love the videos though as a fellow homelabber
Yeah, totally the right way to go. If I had spare devices I'd be doing a series on the set up of exactly this!
GregIn mine I use proxmox and zima os on top of it, have all advantages of zima, and proxmox. proxmox don't consume lots of resources in that scenario.
Nice
Stouweedso do you run zima OS as a VM in proxmox or the other way around?
I would run Zima as Baremetal OS, casa os though, that can run in a Linux vm.
GregZimaOs as a VM, proxmox manage the zfs raid disks. because ZimaOS don't have zfs raid.
GregProxmox is an hpervisor, Zima in not. Is a NAS software. different objectives. This way I keep the best of both worlds.
elevenkxvWhat abot xcp?
I've not really player with it that much, but looks super solid.
elevenkxvWe use it in our company and it is worth it!!! We just upgraded our ram and cpu for this server
William Merdah😂😂😂
Oscar😁
ArchitectNo linux with kvm?
Yeah linux distros is a rabbit hole, I am thinking about something to cover them, but that will be a long video!
PersephoneDKfwiw, truenas and unraid aren't. Similar at all. I get what you are saying, but zfs is significantly better then unraid usage of snapraid.
MFKDGAFIsn't UNRIAD's boot disk have to be installed on USB?
LemoncrowYes, also the license key is also on the same USB (so it’s portable), it’s really a non-issue. I run both TrueNAS and UnRaid, TruNAS is free, that’s the best thing about it, but if you’re gonna grow the NAS with HDD on sale, etc, UnRaird pays for itself.
MFKDGAFI just don't like having it on a usb device especially if I have a device like a boss card. But maybe I'll have to mess around with it.
LemoncrowUnRaid loads the entire OS into system RAM, it’s only used during boot, and given the server should be running 24/7 it should be very infrequent; especially if you have hot swappable drives (mine hasn’t been rebooted in over a year).
Yes, that is currently the process, I belive though that they are working on changing that.
Solomon Grundy Born on MondayI have the 9000 optiplex... I'm going to use ubuntu server and nextcloud
ImTokkingItRemove Zima from that list! Anyone still recommending them is doing so in bad faith at this point
Could you elaborate?
BIZZARat the beginning of the vid you mentioned that you share resources between many proxmox servers like CPU can you elaborate more pls or tag a vid that explains it
When I've played more with it, totally going to do another video with more a dev side to it
BIZZARCheers mate I thought you've vid on YouTube. thanks and good luck 🤞
Guilherme ☭I use Debian for everything, Ubuntu and many others are full of bloatware and closed source (proprietary) software
It's probably the best way to go.
TimI sat on openmediavault for my NAS/home server for a long time... Nowadays I just installed a "regular" old Manjaro there and set up smb and my docker services via docker compose by hand... I simply had to deal with too many strange issues too often. (Especially when I swapped failing drives or stuff like that...) Why Manjaro? Well, it's the distribution I know best...^^ Not best suited but does the job...
Go with what you know :)
R1have you ever tried esxi?
I've look at vmware, was going to do a video about it.
LeonI have the exact same 3050 and got it for around the same price too. Currently running Truenas Scale for random things I have like pi hole and Minecraft servers. Works well for me I’d say
Nice.
gr3n1njaI got sent your video as I'm in a similar situation. I have a old hp prodesk 400 g3. Been trying unraid on it. But not wanting to pay for the licence. Just plan on it being a small file server with a media sever for shows that are hard to get on streeming sites. Would zima work for this. Seeing it's app store would lend me to say yes. Also does this run off the USB or is it installed to the hdd?
Zima runs on a hdd, but you can't use that for anything else, so use a smaller ssd for the os, and then large drive for for storage.
gr3n1njaThanks for that. I have a spare 125 ssd so I'll use that for the Os.
kjoei have an r730xd i’ve decided i raid because of hard drive i wanted use whatever disk i could find in any store or laying around but i tried truenas but some docker were available and custom install need troubleshooting that I’m not sure want to deal with docker issues so give u raid a test and decided if fix my pourpouse for a home lab
Unraid for the win.
sail the high seas ⚓I'm using Debian 12 XFCE on my HP 245 G8 laptop
funstuieJust setup a proxmox cluster with 6 mini computers. All 5 to 7 years old but working fine. ChatGPT has been a great help in getting up and running. Using cheap UGREEN 2.5 usb nics which have been rocksolid it’s a great hobby to get into.
This is something I'm keen to do in the future that's for sure.
owlyNot bad👍💪
Tregelen🇦🇺Any reason you run a bunch of docker containers, and not run them directly on proxmox?
For this project I wanted the easiest and low effort install and maintenance I could go with, that's why it was a Zima choice. For more advanced project I'd go with proxmox.
user1032275008753I don't understand why people always choose complex options. Why not FreeBSD or OmniOS?
For most people a GUI is essential to getting started with homelabbing.
change_meXpenology ?
Synolgy make great hardware and their software is pretty decent as well. I just worry about workaround apps like this when there are other options.
FettDebian?
yeah, I just had to pick something.
Mo Fotagot the same & went for OpenMediaVault, great video
Awesome.
warpcodeeven with only one, I'd still use a hypervisor even if I only run one VM. adding a new node to the cluster and moving VM is super easy. plus backing up and restoring a VM is also super simple
BirbGunYeah backups or snapshotting VMs and containers is way too convenient to use baremetal
I do like the idea of being able to add more devices to a cluster if needed. And honestly I'm acutlally going to run coolify instead as I want something to run Web services rather than applications locally.
warpcodeI suppose my next question will be, why not run it in a VM? if you upgrade the server in future, you only need to copy the VM across, and dynamically expand it's resources instead of needing to reinstall and reconfigure. even my windows gaming pc is in a VM with GPU pass through and full VM backups thanks to the proxmox backup server. it might be a more complicated setup initially but now it's my default
OrigosisSo I have been through so so so many small remotes, keyboard, touchpads, etc. For controlling HTPCs and they all are barely usable at 7-9feet away. Any recommendations? I need something that acts as a remote, but with keyboard and mouse features when needed.
Get a usb extention cable, run the cable from the pc to be as close to your area as you can and plug the usb bluetooth receiver into it. That's the only way I can think of that's reliable.
Or use something like a wifi mouse app on your phone.
Origosisooooh. hmmmmm.
KVM over LAN will do the job.
Mr TWhich linux are you installing zima over?
Zima is a baremetal OS, so no linux needed. CasaOS is the one that is on linux and ubuntu server is fine for that.
Juan Mc Dthank you for the great in depth reviews and zima seems to be a great choice for that single pc. looking forward to seeing what you do with it it more and most importantly your host naming convention. are you a quirky or a functional namer host kinda guy?
Everything in my network revolves around the name Barry eg:bigdatabarry is a storage server.. It's dumb but works for me.
almost engineeringthank you for the information and opinion. i have several diffrent types of pcs and hardware, so proxmox it is. but i would love to centralize it
Perfect!
shactheorbProxmox is really amazing, would 100% recommend it
maya the creatorwhy is nobody talking about how unstable zimaos is? I'm constantly having issues installing docker apps, none of the apps in the app store are up to date and some of them straight up doesn't work
SeanMade by same people that made casaOS which seems to have been abandoned as well ☹️☹️☹️can’t trust em enough to pay for zima.
I've not heard this, I'll investigate
