This is the last review video of operating systems you can use for your homelab server. I have checked out Truenas, HexOS, ZimaOS, Unraid, OMV and now I'm going to take a look at using Ubuntu. I'll test drive #ubuntu desktop and server as options. Will this be the right option for my optiplex?

Oct 4, 2025Correct, zima is a great way to go, but Ubuntu server is even lighter. It was more about what are some options, I did a vide on Zima recently, and honestly that's a creat choice.

Oct 4, 2025Ubuntu server is lighter than zimaos, yes. Ubuntu desktop isn't.
SeeeeeeeebSo then the question is does the desktop version take up that much resources that would warrant using a more limited OS like zima

yureki did install zimaos, for some reason i cant set my drive and the bug noti show blank. Try format even from terminal but no luck.

Thanks for doing the hard work so we don’t have to ;) I’m keen on the Linux option for my home lab, but i think I’ll miss out not having an App Store to browse to see what’s available. Do you know any good resources out there that goes through what’s available? (Apart from your awesome TikTok of course!)

Oct 4, 2025I was thinking a searchable table with the app name, app stores it on and if it's a container or not, something like that, with links too maybe. Anyway, something I'll have a look at.
