i use quad9 / unbound with a split dns for my wg clients to route / resolve interanet stuff, best for true mobile in thailand
Interesting, I'll play with quad9
Thanks!
JotanzilShopdns.quad9.net👍
Quad9 is 100% the bees knees
StreetLensTv😎😎😎
Tik or TokAdguard home has a fully local free option though.
avsentminbthis is google telling you to help them track you
De googling your life is a goal.
dzunanishivambu5A
bookisscribe+1 for Technitium DNS. Definitly for advanced users though
Yeah, I'm getting a device soon and running opnsense on it and going to do videos on using unbound, so hope it will be an easier step for people.
piu37conrrol d with full control plan is the best in my opinion
Yeah, I'm looking at getting a firewall appliance and running opnsense and then it's ethier control d or next dns.
Rakibul hasanবাংলাদেশ
ok cool, Bangladesh.
🇨🇦 Ralph Webber 🇨🇦😎😎😎
xBigDaddyReaperxI love the videos my friend, but a suggestion if you would allow? Subtitles would allow your information to be ingested more efficiently by including more areas of the brains on the part of the viewer.
I shoudl add them yeah, ill start doing that
ScoobyYou are a legend!!! Thankyou for this video!!! I lost access to my IP cameras externally for a year after changing modems. 1.1.1.3 was the missing piece to the puzzle.
THats awesome you got it solved!
qwertyu0123But would be better to just have vpn?
DNS and VPN have different functions, so Im all for using a VPN, changing your DNS will just make browsing safer/faster.
SparxMy ISP provided gateway doesn’t allow this unfortunately. Internet just stops working.
ZerøMy router hides this setting for some odd reason
ZerøSet it on a device lvl
Cumberland Carnivores 🇨🇦How do I give myself a fixed IP address? 🤔
almost engineeringmaybe dont do that. just go rent a vps with a fixed ip for a few bucks a month and traffic what you want to be public through that vps. like a proxy
R£CKZ 🍉Use DHCP reservation instead
punpunYou can’t do that whit the modem that is provided by the provider company so you have to buy a your own modem or router to do that it might help with respond time but there will be no noticeable changes so it’s just waste of money
Many of the devi Es from your ISP these days have this feature, it's pretty com. On. But of course not all
KanataI've been able to do with every provided modem I've ever got, but I can see some ISP's removing the feature.
SinirothDepends on the ISP, I can completely change whatever I want in my ISP provided modem
Ur MomI’ve done this with a major ISPs in Australia. They’re running non-standard firmware, but the DNS settings are still available if you look up the URL on the modem because all they do is hide it from the web interface (or just telnet if that’s available)
Deltasunmodem 🤔🙈😂
REAL_Chicken_SWEIf I have my own bought router, not provided by my ISP, do I still need to do this? I have no blocking needs, have Bitdefender full for security, and kids are ge rown up and moved out. Just want speeeeeeeeeeeeeeed.
LtSefer👍👍👍
Mckitrick 🇨🇦Pihole with unbound FTW!! 😃
I am really looking forward to getting a firewall that's running unbound.
rgliferyepSo 1.1.1.3 is not for me. Or anyone over 11.
I personally use it for my kids and their 14. I think we're all a little different in our needs and requirements, I guess.
golfeggWill it speed up my fire stick
You know what, it's worth a try. Even a little bit is better.
OK🇨🇦I am not allowed to change my dns by my provider
kendostick70can change on your PC and ignore the router
__Edwin__You could try buying a router
R£CKZ 🍉Most isp routers allow to use bridge or modem mode and then run your own router and manage it that way
ClausBlochHvid🇩🇰You want to show something important in a router, but your face is ⅔ in the video
Sanguinary Bloom😂😂😂
CervicheSince when did the S stand for system and not server
Since around 1985
CervicheI had to look into this, I've always heard it called server, I was taught it was server in TAFE and school (early 2000s). It was server in workplaces. In fact until today I have never heard it called system. But google and chatgpt say it has always been system. This is definitely a Mandela effect.
DDE🤣🤣
Br🤣🤣🤣
Dan Heinzlol I want to change my friends dns to block adult content and see how it long takes until he asks me for help
lol
💙🏴Tinker-Tailor 🏴💙Just use this 2001:4860:4860::8888 & 2001:4860:4860::8844
Yeah, Google DNS is just as good as anything else.
💙🏴Tinker-Tailor 🏴💙Can you make a video why people should prefer the use of IPv6
catmanDoes this work with a mesh system as well ?
Yeah, you set this at the modem/router end.
MendoMany of us use a modem/router combo. DNS settings are generally under the router settings from my experience. That’s where I am able to configure which DNS id like to setup. Just saying for those confused with you only saying modem.
I confused a lot of people it seems. I just use the ISP supplied device as a modem only, as dhcp, dns and more is handled in my sepeate router.
realfrewik2I prefer changing dns in the router (which is handling dns) rather than in the modulator-demodulator (which isn't handling dns). How come you wanna change it in the modem, Sir? 🙃😁
Some people dont ahve seperate modem/router/AP's, they have the one combo device from their ISP.
realfrewik2Then say router.
en.cryptoInteresting, how can I route different devices or at least network areas to use different dns?
That's something I'm working on now, how to use a different dns service /settings by vlan. Not sure now, but working on it
HexologistLol the ppl in the comments that don't realize they are using a modem is actually hilarious
Silas ClockworkI've got fiber. I don't have a modem.
🧀🌲you:🗿
Silas ClockworkI don't speak emoji, but I'm guessing you're being insulting, as is the nature of the Internet. Fiber runs to an Optical Network Terminal, which covers the signal from the fiber to Ethernet, which is then plugged directly into my primary router on my mesh network, and the connection is established through PPPoE credentials. None of that is a modem.
icantreadThey call internet wifi and don’t know the difference lol
xoxoxdocker adguard + unbound on my lan, and public dns using a domain name
Brilliant
K H A L E D 🇮🇶🇦🇺I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Pi-hole 😳 It's nice to have a fellow Aussie IT channel.
Planning it :) and thanks!
A.JGood work
michael.tiktokMany service provider like comcast and soectrum don’t allow the modification of their DNS servers. Use your own modem/router. And use 9.9.9.9 and 1.0.0.2
If you just turn of their wifi and disable dhcp on their device, then plug in your own router you can override their controls.
Eoghan Cdoes this work in any country???
Yes, if you go to your device, and see if you can change the settings.
Mr DrakoolaIf you care about privacy, would DoT be a good solutions? Is it slower? But you get privacy?
DoT is secure but identifyable, DoH has obfuscation features so secure and hidden(ish)
AndaluciasteveDude, nobody's used a modem since the last century! If my fibreoptic cable needed modulation/demodulation I wouldn't be getting a 200Mb/s download speed now, would I?
Hellome776I set up adguard on my NAS, the problem is it works too well and you for unblocking things and allowing things
It can be tricky to get right
Michael longso you can speed up fiber?
You can speed up the dns lookup time, yes.
MrvmwareI have AD DNS I did used to use Cisco Umbrella but Cloudflares version isn’t too bad now I just use that it’s free
PanosGeorgiouWhat makes me sad its that people are not aware. For two decades, thats 20 years, I was using openDNS (free) to protect my household/kids even from social networks and now I also installed pi-hole. I am also using cloudflare to clients (.3) just as basic protection. The stuff if free for decades and people are still unaware.
I know, I think that as soon as things get "technical" many people get overwhelmed by how and what and lack confidence to troubleshoot a break.
mistermrhallIn your modem? It’s 2025. Who’s using modems to access the internet anymore
The modem is the de vice that connects you to the ISP, these days it's a modem, router, wifi combo.
liam0202Literally everyone with WiFi? lol
mistermrhallModems (modulator/demodulators) translate digital signals to analog signals; typically over a telephone line aka dial-up. Given the analogue switch off (at least in the UK); there is no use of modems anymore. And typical home network WiFi/router combos do no mo-ing, or dem-ing
Hellome776Are you for real or are you really for real? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
mistermrhallVery much real. Very much used modems in the 80’s
Hellome776🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Davidbruh
GooseThis has to be rage bait
mistermrhallYeah it is. People talking about modems in 2025 is rage inducing.
StatAvgNo if you have NBN, we have NTD boxes and only require routers now, FTTN is an exception
schrolock🐢honest question. is light digital or analog?
mistermrhallThere’s some element to your question which makes me think you know what’s coming next… with regards to modems and ONT for fiber, whilst they perform a similar function, an ONT is not a modem because fiber has no carrier wave
schrolock🐢still it's technically analog, though more like a bastardization of analog and digital and it's actually still called a modem where I'm from
Same
🆅Changing your DNS is one of the best free upgrades for any home network. You're right that ISP defaults are often slow and lack features. For most people, I strongly recommend starting with a “DNS plus” service like Cloudflare for Families (1.1.1.3) or Quad9. They block malware and adult content by default without complex setup. It’s a set-and-forget improvement to both speed and security. For deeper control, NextDNS is the next logical step, letting you tailor filtering precisely. It’s a simple change that makes a real difference.
You and I are in total agreement here.
Nick HallowellA spreadsheet in a server so you mean a database?
Yes, a hude DB optimised for hihg volume queries (CF does like 70M looks a second I think) but I was just using that to simplify the information.
Cesar Bonillai use next-dns and you can create profiles via the controller - much better control
Yeah, Im a fan of NextDNS.
Maik Mueller ᵃʳᵗControlD > NextDNS
Interesting im going to investigate, its got more services, and a few more features that could be handy and pricing is good.
Mike_LitorisI use ctrld lil bro
DeadxxStarIf you use Xfinity, they block the option to edit the DNS if you are leasing their equipment
LongDonSilverI’m still liking the https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/ as it’s still free and resolves to Cisco umbrella it’s bigger brother.
I might do a little video on it.
Michael Bailey1745Luckly I have F2P and didn't need to use the Junk isp router with duel Pi holes doing dns. Didn't know about cloud flair .2 and .3.
OffWorldFilmsNobody use a modem in 2025 😂
yeah, I think they do, what does your fibre or copper connect to in the house from your isp?
OffWorldFilmsRouter, which isn’t a modem.
A modem is what decoded/encodes the data from your ISP to you, the Router manages the internal routing. But again, now modems/routers are bundled.
Shultszzztel me plz witch dns better than your own and faster 😂
wolf-51.1.1.1 is the fastest
9.9.9.9 is good.
Shultszzzno tested my isp's fastest 😝
Definitely_Not_A_KorokpiHole baby!
Republic of Englandif you haven't edited your DNS settings i feel bad for you son I got 99 firewalls but i haven't got them on ...
BacanoMorenoGaming🇩🇴Thought i would ask before Spectrum sends their version of the FBI yo my home 😂. I have 1gig service with wifi7 router and have about 7 devices connected. The ones like phones & tablets, i want to place on permanent 2.4Ghz, & work laptop & gaming pc i want on 5Ghz. I was told that spectrum doesn’t offer continuous 2.4Ghz connection. Only 30mins. My ? Is, what can i do to get fast & better speeds on my gaming PC amidst other devices taking up valuable sources of the wifi? Hopes this makes sense. 😂
2.4Ghs is slower than 5ghz and LAN is always fastest. So Lan cable your PC's, mobiles on 5 and use 2.4 on a guest network and add others to that.
BacanoMorenoGaming🇩🇴So I’ve been told. 😞 my work station/gaming desk is about 20 - 30 feet away & on the other side of the wall from where the router is. I was thinking of doing a mesh network & using LAN that way. But for the wifi 7 mesh setup for 2 devices is insane. I also wouldn’t mind the long cord through the house, but i have 2 dogs that like to chew on things. Smh.
reisingfoenixu know that thing thats called wall? make a hole dude
BacanoMorenoGaming🇩🇴I was looking for an intelligent answer. Hole in a wall has been thought of. And wont happen. & the hole would be in a kitchen wall. So there’s that. 😒😒
reisingfoenixwhy u have the router in the kitchen😭
reisingfoenixu could still then if a whole u could cover with an outlet obviously, u could just do i little " canyon " (i forgot the word) around to the other side🤣 so hide it inside the wall
Dowoad wifiman app, connect to the 2.4ghz and let it run, then see if there is packet loss after 30min. If not it's a great idea and one I was going to recommend in a video on device seperation for security.
syzguruin my config i can use wildcards for my dns 😅👍 very useful
Thats awesome.
efteling_incidentquad9 is a non profit for privacy service with ECS support!!!
Nice
Rikxian_van_HoutenBecause my isp modem wont allow setting dns to some internal one, i use my pihole which i installed on barebones debian on an old laptop i had laying around as both my dhcp server and DNS server and adblocker to protect me and my family against advertisements and a lot of malware and sketchy domains. I wish i could use my own router, but my isp also gave us some wifi extenders which only work with their modem and new wifi6 stuff is not cheap either (for now atleast)
Sounds like you have it pretty well worked out though
Dre AiYou showed up my fyp recently.
Pat Braithwaitecan you do a video on setting up the arr stack on a windows machine for Plex.
Yes I can! I want to get a mini pc running Windows soon, so I'll do it on that!
chris3823562193NextDNS is fantastic 👏
Yeah, I am a fan.
Ted JonesI've been trying to set up pihole for a long time & couldn't get it to connect, coz I couldn't change the DNS in the iOS router. last weekend, I found a guide on how to setting up pihole via truenas & on an Asus router. it worked ok, but every time I turned off my VPN (to access my bank), it killed the connection. the VPN kill switch was not selected. I was looking for something totally different, but I found a raspi gathering dust, so I'm now using that for pihole & it's working a treat 👍
That's great yiu got it working!
Ted Jonesfinally yes 🤦🤣 after watching loads of vids, it baffles me, how many different ways or location on routers & even naming structure, certain basic options are placed & even named. you would have thought, there would be an industry standard regarding this. it would make things so much easier for everyone, if they did.
Tell me about it, it's just crazy
wowwon3I have pi-hole set up on my local server with a default DNS set to 1.1.1.1. Only annoying part is losing the server when I’m away and being unable to control my smart devices
Get the devices on tailscale and you can access remotely?
wowwon3Well no if the server shuts off for whatever reason pi-hope is no longer reachable so all devices lose internet access
Put the pi hard wired to your router, then it's not server reliant?
wowwon3So my server is a proxmox server and I have a pi-hole instance on it. Ya a physical pi-hole would be better but I did what I could with what I had lol
We alywas do the best we can!!
Colinwireguard .. remote in, personal VPN can run it on the pihole or have a separate pi for the job
DaBouSs_λi use ads blocker for like 2 years and its one of the best things I've ever done
Awesome, not suffering through ads is best.
elRadixwhat about adguardhome is also self-hosted solution like pihole/nextdns
You can self host nextDNS but you're using their web ui to manage it, I do cover it but Was trying to be somewhat brief. :)
Daniel Gillamhow does the primary and secondary word? do they need to be the same provider?
You can have different providers, but its best to use the same eg: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
Mr Tanother free one is libre dot gr
Yeah there are lots of options!
SayWhatYour videos have been popping up in my FYP a lot lately and they’re so interesting and well-presented! Got a new sub from me!
Thats awesome, I'm really happy that they help!
