cheesyfingersMikrotik products and their OS are great for learning new stuff and playing around with your network configs
Oh yeah, I'd love some to play with, if I didn't go with Omada I would have use Microtik.
Maybe I'll get sponsored and they can send me a firewall... 😂😂😂
Tristan NewguyWould this kind of setup work on with mesh routers?
If you can set the dns and so on at the master node of your network then yes, 100%
xoxoxfor kids i recommend to run your own dns server and use as public so they will have protection on any internet connection not just home 😁
its hard to run a DNS server at home, if they are out on LTE networks and you're not running a dedicated IP, nextDNS is a sufficant workaround
¯\_(ツ)_/¯When I was starting to get into networking, I switched to an EdgeRouterX and a Ubiquiti U6-Lite AP. At the time I knew nothing and questioned the purchase. Now, that equipment is still in use and I've added a bunch more to my homelab. I'm really glad I made that purchase all those years ago (It was like 5 years lol). Would recommend an EdgeRouter for anyone learning. There's plenty of videos and tutorials that'll get you on your feet while you're learning and you can likely still dabble with it over the next few years
100% yeah, edgerouter is great and worth the investment as you say, years later its still in use.
ZerøOld pc, two nics, Ubuntu server or proxmox set up software to do this done ! 🌝
Donkkiiwhich is better for a simple 2 VLAN at home use? Omada or Ubiquiti?
cfarrimondI have all the gear, I just need to learn how to set it up and use it. I want to set up multiple networks and keep applications separate. I run all ubiquiti server gear, dream machine pro, switches, unifi camera network etc. If you have any deep dive info on layered networking I’d love to take a look and would appreciate the advice.
That was a big commitment to getting all the gear! I'll do my best for you.
cfarrimondThank you. Haha, yes it was. I am planning for a smart home. I have 2 wireless AP set up too. When I built my house I went through and ran a heap of cat6a cable throughout the house. I have multiple ports in each room to have wired connections to permanent appliances and then dedicated lines for HDMI over IP as I want to set up a way to stream to multiple areas of the house either independently or all at once if I chose, same goes for audio. My problem is, I kinda have the idea of how I’d like it to work, I just haven’t found a budget friendly way to achieve what I’m after. I’m learning as I go, I’m a big DIY enthusiast.
PowerFlower 🇩🇰I get the shown example, very useful. But I never found a use for vpn for myself. Single person household, barely any smart devices. A few pcs and gaming consoles and a NAS. My TVs are smart, but need Internet and need to be on the same as my phone for control and casting. Same with NAS, needs to be on the same to work. So, I haven't found a reason or area yet to use it. Maybe I'm just missing something
Alexie ElleseYou can use routing rules to allow access across clans, for example, you have your smart devices on vlan 1, phones and computers on vlan 2, the set the rules to allow forwarding from vlan2 to vlan1, your phones and computers can access your smart devices no problem
PowerFlower 🇩🇰That sounds good, might have to start looking into it. And thank you
Panda 🐼👏👏👏
MollyWhat’s the upgrade from the pos from internet provider
Not sure what you mean?
MollyBest type of router if we have no limits
ohhhh well, I think most will say Ubiquity but im partial to Tp-link (the Omada systems).
panthroI have the UCG-Fibre connected to my VM fibre connection via a WAS-110 SFP+ module. Then I’ve got 2 UniFi WiFi 7 AP. Running 4 VLANS - main, IOT, Camera and Guest. DNS through cloudfare and got all the *arrs running via eweka.nl usenet server.
Soild.
JayExciting!!! Next steps: Having kids
lol, yeah... not essential to quality home networking though
JayEvery one have their own reasons to get excited to have kids. Cool networking project be one😂
Zazikasis it possible to run truenas inside proxmox? I've heard you need some pcie sata card for it to work, could you share your expertise please
Yes its possible, but there are some complexities making sure that it can access the drives. if you need Nas then OMV is an option, OR move to unraid
brennanIt’s easy. I’m doing it and I’m dumb
HelmiepLove this, it helped me alot. I just started learning and planing out my first homelab since I am about to finally get my Fiber connection and started to automate my Workshop and house. Its daunting wirh no Networking experience but also alot of fun! Already planning multiple things I can do thanks to this!
This is awesome! I also had 0 networking skills when I started but thats where we all start! Hopefully you can get some tips from the vids :)
I_Am_TeemoLove your videos I actually followed your videos and made my own plex server which iv been wanting to do for a while, I also saw some people using apps like Gluetun for their vpn container could you make a video on how to add that in the plex server aswell?
Yes, I set up something much easier today and it's perfect and simple!
user97796307846Send this reel 🥰
ODD_MAN_IVpfsense/opnsense router/firewall + vlan capable switch is the way to go for a home network imo
I agree, it's a big step for most people though, this was more a beginners guide.
WurstwasserI'm all on openwrt, it even has essid roaming
ODD_MAN_IVanother valid config
ODD_MAN_IVopnsense is targeted at bigger/more advanced networks. overkill for a home network. but super configurable and arguably more secure than openwrt
yeah I Was thinking on opensense, I just went with technitium and nginx proxy (I mention it in the next video)
cbroadlyloving your content! would love to start getting into some of the homelab/networking side but really not sure where to start. have you got some good project/set up guides? like you did for the Plex server.
I will go over how I set up my own network, it's hard to show the steps, as everyone has different devices.. But I'll try :)
Meh 🫤So networking for me is pretty simple. Home router that is locked down and I use google remote to connect over to my machine
That works well
