Replying to @flux1007 don't use a PI for you #homelab mediaserver. It's just not powerful enough.

Ginger ninja🇬🇧Was just watching your video on pi set up, was just about to buy one to start my homelab journey then saw this 😳.
oh, oh.. take a look at Lattepanda, I did a zimaos build with it in a recent video and its so much better than a pi, and cheaper! I have a link in description but I'll only ever buy a pi for basic stuff, panda is so much better
retrac75😁
Sven_BlitzI ran my Plex server via a Rapsberry Pi 4 with 4-5 remote users and very busy in network use. yeah it is not great for 4k, but 720-1080p it runs great!
Nice, the Pi's really are awesome bits of kit!
BackgroundLogicmy current setup is on a pi, hardware: rpi4 8gb, 4tb HDD, 1tb SSD, argon40 eon case os:rasbian lite with omv7 dockerized services: pihole, nginx proxy manager, jellyfin, actual budget, nextcloud I just came back from a family vacation and had jellyfin streaming to several roku boxes at the rental house as a test run and it ran great
Awesome!

Bel (Sweet3D)What about a NAS?
All depends on the processing power of your nas.
Bel (Sweet3D)Any recommendations? New to all this. Would also like to run a OneDrive / Google photo type backup service additionally.
Thats not entirely true. If your client devices are “good” enough and you have enough bandwidth to be able to “direct play” video, then you don’t need transcoding which means your media server is literally just sending files. The Pi can easily handle that. Im streaming 4k from my Pi5 without even making a dent in the cpu usage
Yes I agree, there are a lot of ifs though, easier to just get a better device.
Id say that if you’re absolutely sure you’re always going to be streaming to devices that support all the needed codecs you can probably run all this on a potato. Transcoding is what kills the Pi. Otherwise it’s absolutely more than just an educational tool
Joseph MacekMy media server is in a container I'm working on setting up running on the same machine as Next cloud and what will probably be my learning and development tool for VM's and networking. it's a 13th gen I5, the T model with 35w at idle. 64gb ram, Rhel9, and an Nvidia A2. My goal is to use the writeups I have to have the A2 manage 6 K80's in separate nodes for machine learning. Any advice or experience would be super helpful. Every part of the software side is in development. The hardware I'll keep regardless because I think it's cool to have a Dell Pentium 4 machine with an RGB fan backing a 3d print grill and usb3.1 where the CD drives used to be 🤣
Honestly at that point, just buy a second hand dell r630, and you'll have all the power you need.
ronin.513N150 with integrated graphics work well for my setup. Wondering if this automation works with jellyfin as well or just plex specific. Also, is casa the only OS that supports the automation apps or can they be install on Debian, for example?
100% will work with jellyfin. CasaOS was just what I used for the example, there are linux installs for all the apps, so yeah, not an issue at all.
adamkinniburghYou’re already using CasaOS… highly recommend the ZimaCube / ZimaBoard
Yeah, they look good, but I think they are a little pricy for what you get.
AliceWolfI’ve been wanting to build a nas for data back up for a while now. Would be interested in your thoughts on using that and having part of it dedicated to streaming. Or would it be best to keep those things seperate?
You 100% can have them on the same machine, its really down to the machine you use, A pi is fine for NAS, but sucks for media.
charlesdigitaleraTry a del820
Personally not a fan of laptops for servers, but Dell is a great brand to go for!
charlesdigitaleraMent the Dell 380 server, can get used and upgraded the Nic and GPU card, but I'm learning curve mode here
It's the CPU you need to be wary of in the older machines. Check the passmark score, if it's over 17000 you're golden.
charlesdigitaleraThank you

Not sure what you mean :)
guitarplyrThanks, I was wondering about this.. I installed Casaos yesterday on a pi4.. love the tool, first thing I thought was this needs I better system for streaming plex. :)
Yeah, pi is good for little thing's, and if you want to spend money you can get a radxa penta hat, and some ssds and make a VERY decent data nas, but media stuff pushes it too far. I was thinking of getting the parts for that and doing a video, making one of you're interested?
guitarplyrI have a plex instance running on lxc, plex login all good. I was not aware of these tools, all of this automation. I have to rethink this setup to make use of this, maybe a new Ubuntu VM and these tools not sure yet. But I can use this pi to play around with, at least see how these tools work better understanding. :)
NopeThanks mate! Looking forward to more content for beginners!
I've got a lot planned!
