jarielrrzI was given a optiplex 3050 micro, a raspi 5, a Netgear gs108 gb switch, and I bought a deskpi t2. Not sure if I should find a stronger mini pc for plex as well as unsure if I should go a second mini PC for trueNas w a DAS? Thoughts?
that's a great giftset! the optiplex should be ok for Plex, but you're going to be limited by drive space. truenas on the optiplex is good, but the pi will struggle. You could get a pentahat for the pi, add drives there. run casaos on the pi, and use that as storage.
ifidjejewuwjwjhwfor my homelab i already have a minipc with 6900hx and 32gb ddr5 ram, alot of nas boxes are realy expensive in my country and 2nd hand older nas-es are also realy expensive npr a 2bay qnap from 2015 for 250 eur so i want to get aoostar wtr pro 4bay for 350e would you reccomend it and i would cluster those 2 devices (i dont want to diy stuff)
Jeremy WixonRoll of velcro over the electrical tape.
morgthe Orange Pi's also don't have a government backdoor if you're concerned about that - others (incl. the Raspberry Pi) are legally required to have this
Andi HereThank you god
KuusetsuAlso an alternative to the DeskPi is printing something like the Lab Rax. Like $30 in hardware
Yes, I just printed out the labrax set and over the holidays I'll be setting it up!
Kuusetsuif you have a bigger budget for the mini PC, the Dell Precision 3240 is a nice 2 liter option with a PCI-E 8x slot inside. I put a low profile RTX 3050 in and am going to see how well it performs for my NAS/Homelab setup
HexProofThank you so much!!
You are very welcome.
yassser.xHello! I wanna build a physical home lab but I really do not know where to start. I do have an old laptop with Linux already installed. But that’s pretty much it. Can you make a video tutorial on setting it up? Or just what to do. Thanks in advance!!
JJFind some easy to setup service, for example Jellyfin, and just test. Test more programs (samba, pihole, home assistant, tailscale). Test more ”os”, omv, ubuntu, proxmox. Just start with something easy, like ubuntu, and find some program that is interesting to you. Use guides online, and all error messages you get can ChatGPT usually explain and fix
yassser.xThanks, much appreciated!
I'm going to do a YT video soon that's a full setup, that may help
Solid advice.
MrAussie_at_CODwhat dell or Lenovo computer would you recommend if I wanna run proxmox with a few different dockers like Home assistant and Nas ect?
I like dell optiplex 3070's personally as I think Dell make better hardware, but my recommendation is best spec for lowest cost.
David 57id move the nas up as an earlier buy. should be 1 of your first. modem and router u get from your isp. setup smb, ftp, cif, nfs or iscsi. the mini pc then proxmox. nfs or iscsi to the nas and then start projects. grab a cheap nas sub$200, refurbished drive$50-100, mini pc $100. that will keep u busy
thomascussonswhat's your thought on Beelink machines?
I think their pricing is a little high, the external gpu add on is a great idea though, gaming and AI functions in a smaller form factor. I wouldn't say no if it was free, but you could pick up multiple second hand units and build a proxmox cluster for the same price and get a lot more functionality. That said.... That external gpu think, that's pretty nifty... I dont know if I would buy one... I'm torn... M4 mac mini... Proxmox cluster... Beelink with external gpu.. That's a hard decision to make.
thomascussonsI'm thinking for purely for hosting a Plex server! (already have a beelink, but is it good enough for the job?)
I'm doing a video today on this, but if the cpu has enough power to transcode, then your totally fine.
wonder_shartCall me crazy, but do you HAVE a homelab if you don’t have a huge box of cables?
Hahaha haha, correct. It's the true badge of a homelabber. The bigger the pile the more the lab.
wonder_shartSomeone asked me for an HDMI cable a couple of weeks ago and I DIDN’T have one. I was pretty disappointed in myself. That said I only didn’t have one because I was using 5-6 of them just on my mega desk
Im disappointed in you, I think you need to hand back your Homelabber card.
However, that is a VERY tasty setup.
wonder_shartWhy, thank you! Considering saving for a rack mounted case, since I have 2 full towers. Having them on rails would be pretty freakin sweet
Michael BellAlso the desk pi is great for ham radios. I 3D printed some brackets for it, and it works swimmingly
I'm jelly!
Michael BellI would recommend at least in America since there is a lot of stock on eBay a Dell T300 series workstation. You can toss 8 3.5 inch drives right in the front of the box and upgrades are stupid cheap.
Good tip!
warpcodeI'm treating myself to ethernet crimpers and testers. my new hobby will be terminating my own cables
Ohhhh, now that's something I really need to practice!
PatrickMy dad bought a whole spool or Ethernet cable (i think CAT5) years ago. I’ve never paid for an Ethernet cable haha. Great investment
That is possibly the best investment one can make. apart from it now being "slow", still I wouldn't say no to a spool!
usersxnnvrjv27If I'm buying a nas, why would I also need a Dell? Don't they serve the same purpose?
Seb :Pwould you recommend I get a larger old office computer and just toss 3 HDD into it? or get a more powerful smaller PC like you suggested and have it connected with a nas. ?
It really depends but if you have access, I'd go with the old pc and pimp it out with drives and a gpu, that's going to do a lot!
KingBjordDo you have recommendations for a cheap managed switch?
My current go to is tplink, I use their omada system but it's cheap and decent enough.
paramedic192Raspberry Pi or small form computer like a Lenovo Thinkcentre. I got mine Thinkcentre on eBay for $40.
Nice find!
paramedic192Look deep into the specs of modem / routers as far as how much control you will have. I bought an Asus RT At88U Pro because it had great ratings. A lot of proprietary stuff and VLANs aren’t as easy as with a fully manual modem / routers. Next time I’ll go with something that allows full control of everything.
RoferMy man, just in time, literally today buy the equipment
NICE! If you want I have some links in my description (Clickkable.me) , would help a lot if you find something there!
