I just picked up a Dell Optiplex 3090 and in this video I’m testing out #zimaos . It’s designed to be beginner-friendly: simple, fast to set up, and focused on being a Synology alternative for file management, storage, and NAS use. ZimaOS also supports virtual machines and Docker containers, which makes it appealing if you’re just starting out with a low-powered machine. That said, advanced users may find limitations like no GPU or USB pass-through in virtual machines to be deal-breakers. Overall, it’s a solid option for beginners who want easy storage management and a quick setup without the steep learning curve of other systems. #homelab

4.8lV10Bit late to the comment section but as a beginner zima os is awesome, I don’t get why people hate on it in the comments 😅
I thi lnk for a beginners os, you're right it's great!
ggthank you for your video ❤️
DominikIs there something similar to Surveillance Station on Synology?
Someone mentioned Shinobi in my comments the other day, that could be similar.
Take a guess. Prince whatyou should try (explorer [haiku] formally beos, written in c++ it's very fast and only about 1.4gb runs on old hardware no problem
Oh, now that looks really interesting.
ImTokkingItIgnore paid influencers. Don’t let Zima hold your data hostage!
How is it holding your data hostage, also I'd LOVE to get paid, I don't get shit for videos, I can't even monotise my account!!
🥺
syntactic_sugar4Are you not worried about ZimaOS not being open-source?
Kinda but not totally. I think the free version is ok, yes they may close it and make it paid but I don't think its likely, and there are alternatives
syntactic_sugar4I’m more worried about security, not a rug pull
As it's the default os for their hardware I think it going to be OK, same as synology DSM
metalkutz😂😂😂
danielabbou👍👍👍
paramedic192Installed Zima OS and love it. The only issue for me is that my laptop runs Linux Mint and there is no Linux desktop client and ZeroTier doesn’t work on Linux Mint.
Awesome on Zima, sorry to hear it's got issues with Mint though.
paramedic192Bummer for me, but I setup three friends who use Windows with it. They absolutely love it. One had 30,000 family photos on their with zero backup.
Booyaa!
KeeganWould you suggest, Zima or Casa for plex/radarr/sonarr and for a NAS setup. Which will be the better option to go for?
if you have more than 3 drives and are ok to pay then Zima is gives you a little more flexability as its the OS, casa is just sitting on top of linux.
KeeganThanks Benjamin, Yeah I'm thinking about installing the OS on a small drive like a 500GB, then have 2x2TB on raid1 for the storage.
Sounds like a plan to me.
Parasitebigbeartechworld is for casaos but should work for this great extra for the app store
Not sure what they do
Juan Mc Dwhat I did was get a beefy pc and put proxmox onto it then rev up a few zimaOS VMs for my docker stuff. I've a blankish one as a template and if I have a particular project I want to try I rev a copy of it up. I made, what I called Zimarr, VM and followed your videos to make them so that no you for inspiring me and all of us.
Im going to check out Proxmox soon its super popular!
FrankI’m excited for the series to see what software to install on my system
I hope they help!
Dany GonzalezSad to see none of these custom OSs support Sharepoint sites, just OneDrive 🙁
I wonder if there is a way to get sharepoint into the list using their API's?
Dany GonzalezBeing able to replicate to a Sharepoint site would be a huge bonus. You could effectively use the NAS a local cache of sorts.
Doktor Kosmosproxmox then run zima within it? why lock down to bare metal zimaOS
I have head this a few times it sounds like a good way to go.
Damian DaerinNice explanation!!!
Glad it helps!
XxCRABSTICKxXmight have a look just for my nuk factorio/minecraft server
I think you should! ;)
Sebastian KlingkAs a Unraid guy, I would love to know what are the differences between Unraid and Zima? Except Unraid running on an USB stick.
Im a big fan of unraid and will be doing a video soon, im just trying to not be too biased!
Jon 🇬🇧🇪🇺🌍This is interesting. Can you apply different IP addresses to the docker containers? Also does it support a raid over USB? Just looking for a mirror.
Its possible to have a different IP for each container, its all on the same subnet though but yes. you can use Ipvlan in Unraid for it.
David Tullynice explanation dude. looking forward to the other in the series.
Awesome, glad you like it
Wolf✖2 🇨🇦do you have any recommendations for PC cases with a lot of drive bays? usually to spin up a nas or server or something, I'll buy a refrub desktop, but more and more that stuff is mini PCs, or, if full size, has at most 2 drive bays.
I don't really know much about cases to be honest, sorry :(
Zima’s software and hardware design teams are really killing it
Yeah, it's really neat!
