I just picked up a micropc Dell Optiplex 3050 for my #homelab and I'm not sure what os to run? #proxmox #unraid #truenas #zimaos open media vault? So I'll do a series on them all, asking the questions, what's the pros and cons, what hardware is best, what are the use cases and more, but what one should I do first?

Mr skin bag😂😂😂
ZATANNANow it’s 150 dollars… what do I do 😭😭😭
Oh no, really?
Its $30 the os.
ZATANNAThe dell 3050 I mean, I think it’s due to ram prices surging 😅. Instead of $50 it’s $150-$200
Oh, ohhh no.
OmarThank you 🙏
leah xwould you consider joining my discord
Sure
Admiral Horatio Nelsonfanless? I have the same one and there's a fan inside it.
Yes, you're right I misspoke and didn't catch it in the edit.
mrvandemarI hate Ubuntu with a passion. I’d rather install gentoo from stage 1 than run Ubuntu
Sarp-03 🇹🇷Just plain Debian with docker Containers is the best choice tbh
Can't go wrong with that.
mrvandemarSure you can. Docker requires system services. Use podman and run the containers in userland
TBGamingHow do you get around the storage most I can put in is maybe an 8 TB
I have a video today that will answer this exact issue for you
TBGamingYeah, it popped up on my for you page. I just thought I was lucky.
ottolopezobviously ChromeOS flex, zero maintenance, zero viruses, install it and forget about it
Iv'e not really spent much time with ChromeOS, I should give it a look.
ottolopezit's pretty locked down, just a simple browser, it's great for sharing old devices (office, home, etc.). I recommend it for 'additional" devices around home
RandomHappinessCorrection they are not fanless
Correct, I misspoke in the video.
~kutti~♤♡◇♧i use this
~kutti~♤♡◇♧you can buy it from @KRTN_Solutions
Kenji.25I'm running Debian + casaos (used in the beginning now not as much) and cockpit for raid 🙏
Kenji.25Casaos is basically zimaos before it became zimaos if I remember correctly
Nice.
.NixOS
Interesting, I'll take a look
ZackI love unraid
cryptocomcodeDoes it have legacy bios
I belive so, I was able to edit bios settings so it worked for me.
It's your lad DareWhat would be better, A Dell opitplex or a ThinkCentere Tiny? I feel like they are both very similar, and you can find them both of similar price ranges
I would say they are basically the same (depending on spec of course) but I persoannly prefer a Dell, as I belive they have a better build quality for devices that are "always on".
It's your lad Darehonestly, as of late Dell products have been failing me, so I'm more inclined to the thinkcentere for a first time home lab. Only thing I'm worried about is how old they are, but I'm only really thinking of a low power server so should be fine *fingers crossed*
d0nkeybobdo you have a link to it? i'm looking for a few micro boxes for a homelab
I just got it off Facebook marketplace, sorry.
Oussema HarrabiI have worked with both Proxmox and TrueNAS, and I found that Proxmox aligns better with my needs, particularly in terms of virtual machine performance and stability. In my experience, TrueNAS VMs tend to be slower and less stable, and I encountered several issues while using them. However, TrueNAS excels in its simplicity and efficiency when it comes to quickly deploying and managing applications.
Proxmos is super powerful, once you get over the learning curve its a really great option for lots of applications.
JBGot a 3040 from work for free and it works amazingly with proxmox
Nice
Althey are not funless but quite 👌 ... I approve. I created a custom face plate for them to replace the ugly black. it's quite nice 🤔
Yeah I misspoke about fanless, do you have a link to your Faceplte STL? Can I share it?
AlI will upload it and send yoy link 👌
Alfree for all license do with it what you please 😏
Bing BongsYou could always put proxmox on it, and in the future, if you find/get more, set them up in a proxmox cluster. I have a HP elitedesk g6 I am trying proxmox on and been enjoying it.
I did a vide today about proxmox
Foxywhere from? eBay has them for around 200
Facebook marketplace was the place for me
Joe ChapaUse ZimaOS. It’s FREE and it’s web managed. No need to remote into a desktop. Better management of apps. Can install ANY Docker app with full customization. You can even customize installs via SSH. I have mine setup with a USB JBOD enclosure and pick up all of my hated drives with no issues.
Zima Is great, I had a look at it!
HERBexcellent dropping Knowledge--> use them in my home lab--> excellent for running mint linux 💯
So many great Distros to choose from!
Simone Fantininext time go with SterlingX 👍
Starling is new to me, going to research!
Simone Fantinihttps://www.starlingx.io/ i use it on more powerful hw, but man.. let's play :)
Super interesting.
Sankalpa RijalCan you do servicess like NAS, Adblock and Any Streaming Service on that machine, choose any server/os or any idea to run those three in a machine. Better to Add some PCIe to SATA for the extra storage, if that dell support that.
Sankalpa RijalSetup can be with Docker as well. That is my plan, so would love to follow that
Yeah this 100% will run all of that, each app in its own container, and connect additional drives for storeage and make pool them.
stereotypicalcattIm probably just stupid, but what's the advantage of doing proxmox instead of just normal debian with docker?
Ease of use is one consideration.
Vishnu Cruzwhat's the use of a micropc ? is it just for server?
yeah, I think it will be projects and random testing of things, I don't want to be doing on the production network/servers
aaronshoemaker442200I put ProxMox on mine. Runs good.
aaronshoemaker442200Same quirks.
Proxmox really is the most popular it seems.
D1NGOthey are nice. just got one 😊
Im a fan!
Mark CooperProxmox with Ubuntu
suwuproxmox vs kubernetes?
I think ill have to do a video on this.
onyx84dMy Optiplex works with HDMI BIOS and I can boot from the front USB
Maybe it was just a me issue or we have a different setting, but it was an issue for me so I thought it may be same for others.
MylesUnraid on the NAS. Proxmox on the Optiplex for all the LXCs.
That is a solid plan.
FxTalos for k8s vanilla with 6 3050 with 6, 2to and 128go in m2 and let’s go
ohh, you are going to send me down the Sidero rabbithole, this is interesting.
🅗🅔🅝🅡🅨 ❽❶Where you get those for 50$? In europe they are like cheapest maybe 120-130€
Really? Facebook marketplace
ShuLiIt depends on the CPU. There were many configurations Intel Core i3, i5, i7 6. i 7. Gen. and RAM.
🅗🅔🅝🅡🅨 ❽❶Luckily i got mac mini 2012 i7 50€ (2012 you can change ram and hdd)
Cv Man Plusis hp t740 good
eternalstubbornclassic option
naimgot an unraid but then feels a little sluggish running Jenkins. Migrated to debian and thinking to move to proxmox 😅
KTRON-TECHNOLOGIESproxmox
BigMI use zima on the same device
TBD0x00You should always use proxmox or any other type 1 hypervisor and then you place what ever you want on top of
There are always other options!
AndaluciasteveDepends what app(s) you want to run on it, no?
Very much so, the use case is an important factor to consider
Ted Jonesat my work, they are going to upgrade our thinkcentre pc & I've already asked the IT manager, if I can buy it from them hopefully they will give it to me for nothing 🙏🤣 I was thinking on what to do and what to install on it, so this series you are doing, will defo help me decide. as I've only used true as & proxmox before.
Nice, hope you get some!
ricardo martinezwhat about power consumption
It idles around 20w and cN get up to 100w when it's pushed
ricardo martinezare those good for a k8s cluster?
I can't see why not :)
Renan AndradeI always do Debian. For me is the best and simple to start
Perfect place to start
PapaBear2030can I ask, what is the idea of multiple server boxes? I ask because I have old PC with proxmox with bunch of containers and VMs. Can't really think of a usecase.
For me, 1 server is compute that has maybe 50 containers, 2 vms and some other odds and ends. The second is storage that will be converted to deep storage when I get a new (refurbished r720xd), this is projects and shit I can break..
WurstwasserI am sick of caring for the base is that has nearly no use at all and affects all services so I went with flatcar Linux. the dual partitioning scheme allows for easy failsafe system restore which I actually never needed yet. 😆
warpcodeproxmox with a ton of RAM, because then you can install whatever after. and it works great with terraform if you get into DevOps for VM/lxc infrastructure
/home/betaPut nixos is the best for servers
I'll add it to the list
Jon 🇬🇧🇪🇺🌍I was thinking Ubuntu with a bunch of dockers… bu I’m all ears
Yeah, for most flexible use case, Ubuntu will be great.
Jon 🇬🇧🇪🇺🌍Oof this is timely! Just got a Dell 3070 from EBay. They sent the wrong PSU, so I have some time pull up a chair before I get going 🤟
Awesome!
Tomasz PakułaI gave up and just use Arch + Cockpit on my server. It's the easiest for me
Solid choice.
paramedic192The prefect tips to solve my problems!
Glad to hear!
GayCookie StudiosI wish I had connections to get things for cheap haha
Facebook market place FTW.
Marc Schattorieebay😃
Eric Lanternebay, what are you looking for, I sell on ebay
user7798187592011I run my homeland on a 2011 Mac mini (Ubuntu)
Are you running Ubuntu in a vm or did you flash it over the Mac OS?
Adam KinniburghZimaOS (Docker for Dummies 😂) is great for beginners
It really is
Snowman74always was baffled why zimaOS and CasaOS are different I only assumed zimaOS was primarily there for their zima boards
Doktor Kosmosfor dummies, I like how making anything easy today is looked down upon. keep running on bare metal big boii
BoomI’d say proxmox since that’s free out of the box. If you don’t mind me asking what’s the appeal of using unraid?
Got to start somewhere :)
Oliewhat processor should you go for with the dell optiplex?
REALLY depends on what you're wanting to do, the one I got was the i5 7th Gen, the 7500T@2.7 and its got a 5200 Passmark, so far pretty snappy.
focus9000Well you didn’t buy it on Amazon that is for sure. And intel core i5🤨🤨🤨
Got it off Facebook marketplace, so a little cheaper than Amazon.
GavVery interested in this series. I’ve recent converted an old Mac mini into a home server with Ubuntu Server as it’s what i _know_. Deffo interested in seeing the other options in action.
Hope to give some insights :)
Gergő Komjátithese mini PCs are awesome to get second hand for homelabs, they aren't expensive, they are pretty quiet, and their power consumption is very low, but my only problem is storage, I need at least one 3.5 hdd, and using a USB enclosure is pretty unreliable.. :/
That's the biggest drawback for these units, it's compute more than storage that's for sure.
