Nick RichardsonBut what’s the advantage over something like adguard where they use and give out a free dns to block ads? I use it and it great I was going to set up a pihole until I saw this public dns
More control over your network, is the basic why
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤI don't have pihole yet but planning to but why whould I need to activate dhcp in pihole instead of the router? sorry if the question is stupid
Either will work for you, If you let the Pi manage your DHCP list then you can set up rules for specific devices if thats something you want.
FuZzYSainT13Install on raspi through dietpi
TJ🍃I plan to run pihole, and a media server. Is it worth having the pihole on its own device or can it use the same hardware as media server? Love the content
I would say, that if you can, run it on a single device because its just got less chance of going down. Media server, keep it seperate.
autizmI set up a pihole pc on Thursday and it was super easy! for anyone worried. it is not that scary. I used an hp pro desk 400 and it works great
Nice.
Deez😁😁😁
my original Pi is set up as a PiHole! really the only thing it's good for anymore lol
I should do a video on different things you can use a Pi for. Pihole, goodsync server, home assistant and so on..
BradPi-hole and Unbound are a great easy combo
Gen X rule .Go search “dietpi” it’s great for install lots of different apps I use it for pi hole and emby (plex now won’t allow remote play without subscription ) could also use it for a nas drive . It’s had a simple interface just select the program you want and it install it for you . Realy low overheads I ran pi hole on a raspberry pi 1 .
Nice I'll take a look
Gen X rule .I been using dietpi for about 5 years . It’s also a great tool for new people to use and learn a bit more tinkering with a device with no GUI . I even run it on my old HP micro server as a media centre uses so little memory . You should do a video about it .
makenosenseWhy pihole if technitium dns allows the same and more (automations, dns zones). Maintaining pihole is awful in the end..
Technitinim is a good option, pihole is just a little easier to use for beginners.
Omar SagooI use technitium but as an SWE I can easily say the average person should NOT use it. It’s not very intuitive and requires some domain knowledge to setup safe and proper configurations. Pi-hole is great for the average dude that wants to do something techy but doesn’t really know much. (Most dudes)
Wolf✖2 🇨🇦how is this different from the edge router vlan stuff you were also talking about?
This doesn't manage VLANs; it is just for managing things like DNS.
BackgroundLogicI'm running my pihole on a pi but in a docker container static IP is assigned in the docker compose file. Router is pointed at the pihole to manage the DHCP assignments and DNS.
Nice
tritfitI have been using AdGuard Home for a while, but I am going to switch to Pi-hole soon.
I like adguard as its got the web UI as well, but for simplicity pihole is great
tritfitI have a local DNS for my home lab, and local domains don’t work from a PC unless I add it to the AdGuard rewrite section or add dns. Adguard is using local dns. Someone told me Pi-hole won’t have that issue. I used to have both AdGuard and Pi-hole, but last year I replaced Pi-hole with a second AdGuard Home. I’ll give it a shot with one node and see if it works.
You'll need to use an nginx proxy to resolve it though.
xoxoxi have 2 instances adguard dns on lan and public, using nginx, block geoip, allow only from my country, for kids services restricted, second pass thru first but using custom dns a dns family shield, the second has block list and services restriction, so my kids will acces internet safe from everywere, do not forget unbound 😄
beansGot pihole purely to setup local domain registrations, and a little nginx reverse proxy to allow me to access all my local sites with just a local domain url without the port! Haven't quite figured out how to do it with the proxmox dashboard though. All internal only, no ports forwarded on the router.
user5432652546the proxmox webgui is exposed on 443, so you should be good as with other server block in your nginx proxy, what problem are you facing?
beansMy proxmox webgui is on 8006, I got it to be accessible via nginx, but when I logged in it gave a 401 no ticket error. I didn't get much further than that
Proxmox needs its one auth and that doens't play nicly with nginx. set nginx to pass websocket auth headers and it "should" work
Jazztrying to use a wireless pi for this and I'm not sure how to run it headless. I installed the OS onto it but don't know what to do next since obviously booting to the pi OS I installed from the site wasn't the right thing to do... haha
I strongly recommend you use LAN for this for speed and reliabilty. Also just plug in a screen/mouse keyboard? OR open terminal ssh user@IP
Jazzsadly it's a pi Zero wifi. doesn't have an Ethernet port
Ahhh, yeah a little more difficult. You'll have to ssh into the terminal then
SayWhatOnce again, you’ve made literally the best video to learn about a subject. I never thought I’d be getting my networking tutorials off TikTok, but here we are! Thanks Ben!
Awesome dude, glad you're getting some value from it!
mcgumbo4444I use brave browser and my son found out if you sign into Spotify on brave it will block all your adds
That's a great tip!
neurolianI also noticed this 👍
IndorilI have just got AdGuardHome up and running to manage DNS and DHCP. Next phase is to add libvirt and pfsense and switch DHCP to that and also add Wireguard VPN
solid plan there!
VonHaggishere is my disaster 😅
If it works then it's perfect. You know what they say, it's what's on the inside that counts.
philIf you lazy you can use the raspberry pi imager to install pihole directly to the sd kart
That's always an option
Graham Ellingsendoes funneling traffic through Pi Hole on the Raspberry Pi like this affect traffic speed, etc?
philNot really, its still using an outside dns, but catches the bad connections thats in a list
DeadxxStarHave you gone over IPTV yet, if so where can I find your info on it all?
I haven't but I will.
Zgreat vid as always. it's a great that I came across this vid I am trying to make use of my pi 2 and I was thinking of pi hole and wireguard to install on so I can access the network from outside. do you recommend any other useful app for pi 2 keeping in mind it does not have alot of fire power
Pihole for dns and so on, then just use tailscale for access, then it's no issue at all. Tailscale sits on all the devi Es yiu want to connect to your network and that's it. And free.
I just switched from obsidian to anytype (notion alternative) the server can be fully self hosted, I really dig it.
Nice
