AthionMy homelab is currently spread across 2 desks … and a garbage can lol :) cables everywhere … but it’s still in build mode. Hopefully this weekend it will end up in something remotely resembling a rack. Current config is 4 HP Minis, a Dell Laptop, and a (soon to be built) NAS (building it off my old Threadripper gaming rig (7 years old)) ProxMox clustered.
I hope you post a pi when you're done!
boopbeeparaq tour- Mission Accomplished
Lol
LuNaClI love a nice rack 🥰
lol.
Davon Williams😁
MikeOk my biggest issue with these videos is you’ll say you’re running 45 docker containers but not what they do and why you run them. I’m so curious
I guess I need to go through them then!
freddy.funkoHow do you transcode on the dell? I also have a dell server but i need a videocard to transcode but mine does not support it somehow
Gibbogot 2 x dell r730xd
Ooohhh I'm jelly.
Gibbojust started messing with unraid. as im looling to move from windows server and havr that run as a vm
Nice, unraid is a great first choice
Bleuethow do you attach the switch to the shelf ?
I just used nuts /bolts and some washers to sandwich between the ears and the sides of the shelf uprights.
cheesyfingerswhat's your day job?
It the moment I work as a technical product manager for a data enablement company. B
DemonHi, my uncle gave me his old HP Proliant DL360p Gen8. I tried to install proxmox yet wasn’t able to. What should I install to the server? He also gave me a Cisco Catalyst 3550 and HP KVM server console switch. I’m trying to learn how to home lab.
It really depends on your goals, if its a simple NAS, then ZimaOS is good. If its bigger, then Unraid could be the option.
kjoeunraid just make sure the raid card is supported to HBA mode or can be flashed to it mode if no go to proxmox or it you have the serial go to a window server and use hyperv to run all vm you’ll ever need even unraid or truenas in a vm
oyoStarting mine now, your setup will be my inspiration 🔥👌
Love it
Dev“Basic” Home lab, meanwhile has an enterprise rack server 😂 this thing’s sick dude
Lol, it's an Ikea shelf, refurbished second hand hardware, repurposed gaming PC's with cheap parts. But thanks, I'm proud of it and it fills me with joy :)
DevHold up that’s brilliant. My home lab exists in 2 bays of a little basic Amazon shelf so I absolutely love the repurposing
Its the only way to go, if I had the money, sure i would have all the fancy stuff, but I prefer to make do. Function over form.
occulticOwlI yearn to reach this at some point
Its not too hard to do, its all second hand, refurbished, repurposed stuff, found as cheap as possible. Ebay and Facebook marketplace.
Jagworksyou game over the Network? it's a 4090 in a rack? how?
So gaming is a pain, but I have a 10Gbps connection between it and my mac. Rack mount, its just a big box really.
Ains Ooal Gownhahaha basic you say😳
tritfitI am trying to install ollama at home lab server, and it’s causing my server to overheat due to the CPUs. I am thinking to buy an old gaming computer from OfferUp or Craigslist. What kind of pc do you recommend so that I can look for that?
It will all depend on your Gpu as that's where the speed/usability comes from for self hosted AI. I have a rtx 4090 gpu with 24gb of vram, and that let's me run a 20billion parameter model. So like gpt-20b runs fine.
DazMca proper home lab, not some off the shelf pay to play setup 👌
Thanks, I was a little embarrassed to be honest, I see all these fancy racks and then my janky setup looks, not as fancy
DazMcI got Unify dreams on a Netgear budget pal, but if i make it and it works, then I'm happier than parting with cash! 🤣🤣
Yeah, function over form. 😁
Jason TuckerI have a Dell EMC PowerEdge T430 sitting on a harbor freight caster box that I can move around to work on it. No dedicated rack since cooling is an issue. It has 10 drives in it of mixed size running Unraid. As you said function over form.
Ryanwhat are your future plans for the Nvidia a.i pc?
I do a lot of AI stuff, so having a local model to run inference and training, rather than paying is someing I'm keen on.
RyanCool, I’m also working with AI. My setup runs local models, does inference, manages memory, applies rules, and automates tasks safely. using minisforum ai X1 pro.
Nice :)
chrisare you exploring ceph?
I wasn't, but I'm going to now
chrisI'm mind blown by it. 😅
Its really impressive.
funstuieWhat’s the part number for that 10gb nic?
I don't have the part number but I have linked it in my bio link, it's an affiliate link FYI. And it seems to have gone up since I bought it. Be aware it gets hot as the cooling is really not well thought out, that's why I'm trying to design a case, to out a 40mm fan in it. When I finish the case, I'll share the stl.
IT-Labrat | NSAjust a budget home lab😋
IT-Labrat | NSA😎
Nice dude
Stephen | AI Engineerdope
Running n8n AND your no code architect tool kit on there too.
mcgumbo4444I got a Dell r420 running trunas and I love it. Excited to see the network video your going to do
Ex-Datacenter Dells are awesome.
user7798187592011Iraq tour?
so many deployyments..
otterammo666nice! you mentioned 50TB mixed (size?) drives with unraid. not counting redundant storage, do you dedicate drives for different purposes (like one for photos, another for video, etc.) or take more of a load balancing approach?
Stand Easy ArtsNot the Rack-tuah 😭
Lol
ronin.513I scored an eaton 9px3000rt ups and 4 battery modules basically for free, works great, but I don't have a server rack let alone a server 😂 cool setup, trying to get some ideas for a home hobbyist build to go with my absurdly overkill ups 😂🤙
JUrsineRacks are p cheap. Definitely look into it for those ups’
I'm in Thailand, so not so cheap for good quality second hand stuff..
Sad-ow-boyan ikea shelf? no name drop???
The Bror, sorry!
Sad-ow-boythanks a bunch 🤧
I_Am_TeemoDo you think it’s worth getting ubiquiti equipment for your home setup or just go with tp link or the other cheaper brands?
If you have the money, ubiquiti, if you're on a budget then TP Link Omada is great.
Sebastian KlingkLove my Ubiquiti equipment at home 🥰
