👑Joey Blanco👑 WWBDAre you able to download videos on plex and have access to it with no internet access?
Yeah, the files are downloaded to your media server already so you always have access. However it may be worth looking at jellyfin.
👑Joey Blanco👑 WWBDThank you sir I definitely will!
LavenderAnyone having issue with using T-Mobile and plex
Έλενα&S😈😈😈
ִ️⃝ᅠ ️⃝ᅠ ️⃝ᅠ ️⃝ᅠ ️⃝ᅠIf Jellyfin is “hard” then I wonder how plex looks like
Easy?
ִ️⃝ᅠ ️⃝ᅠ ️⃝ᅠ ️⃝ᅠ ️⃝ᅠYea but how can you make easy more easy
blu✨
bloomallooI tried jellyfin first and it was just too clunky for me. Plex is much less of a hassle for me
Totally, Plex really is plug and play, I would suggest also checking out CineNow as thats even easier (but paid)
Starjellyfin has GPU transcoding, I personally use it and it runs great. it's completely open source and has great provided plugins and third party plugins. yeah remote streaming is harder but I would rather take the time to set it up than pay the price of Plex now
Yeah Jelly fin is great!
mattyjellyfin is for ppl who like linux. linux is for ppl who like to spend hours finding a line of code they have to enter for something to work on a forum. ik this bc i’ve had to spend hours doing so.
Lol, couldn't have said it better myself.
adamYou can also just install both on the same server. I have both in Docker and they work great with the same media folders. I made a custom version of Jellyfin for myself with a better UX design that nicely shows through all the web apps.
I'd love to see it!
Alias21kodi is still the goat
kyleplex is the best
OnlyoneroadsI just started my jellyfin server journey and so far I have yet to need to install any plugins or add-ons. Seems to be working great
Awesome sauce
Spunky CabbagePlex. 🤮 Heavy, horrible transcoding, awful. Kodi, more specifically OSMC, either on proprietary hardware (Vero) or a Pi. Can't beat it.
I should do a video on kodi
ExivusPlex is the single best piece of software I’ve had for 20 years on.
almost engineeringits free and private, the whole reason we are selfhosting and not subscribing to another streaming service
Paying for features.. But just use the free version.
Paywallec verison unlocks hardware Trasncoding, free is software trasncodeing, so you just need more CPU processing is all.
maxxmakesstuffCouldn’t get Jellyfin to properly install on my PC, so I use Emby instead. Worked perfectly
Emby is great!
ItikIf you can afford thousands of dollars in home theater setup you can pay for Plex
true, or if you just want something easy to set up and manage its also an option.
MA RobertsInstall tailscale and you can do remote content with jellyfin easily. I switched from plex to jellyfin recently and it's definitely a struggle with some things. Had to get a different app for audiobook serving and I still haven't tackled the music library. Point plex at it and it scans just fine. On jellyfin it just creates a messy and unusable music library. It definitely needs more work to correctly structure the files for scanning
Tailscale is awesome, im a big fan!
jyou can get the lifetime Plex pass on sale with a VPN from a country where it's cheaper from time to time. I got the lifetime pass while vpn'd to Romania or something and paid like 1/4 of the price
Nice, need to be aware on the next LTP relase is!
jI found out via cheapies.nz (NZ deal website if you're not familiar) think they have notifications too!
I'll take a look
Francisco Kikini need to setup my raspberry pi with sickbeard and couchpotato
Tell me how you go
Heero2077just started this today, I went with Plex just because my Samsung TV has a native app, whereas jellyfin I'd need to side load the app and I'm just not about to do that with an expensive tv
Yeha, plex is just easy to use, I think thats one of its big appeals.
Sleepy SaviorI tried Jellyfin, my issue is the log in process, every time I want to change accounts, any time my mom wants to use it, its a whole complicated sign in process
Mclovinwhat about VLC 😳
PenDraGon242Buy the Lifetime Plex pass on Black Friday to support the creators onetime and you don’t need anything else!
3nyu🍉how is my whole fyp just self host beef
Because it's tasty
grt953a few years ago I was running Kodi but now I have deployed jellyfin. Plex looks cool but the free version lacks a lot of features
stGovStremio is easier
It really is easy to use!
JozPlex is getting worse, Jellyfin is getting better, but JF still ain’t good enough.
Infuse is an option, its basic and works with all the servers, but it is paid.
SteveCorbettLove Plex. It just works. Love the way it automatically recognises your downloads and displays them on screen like you’re using Netflix.
Ditto.
effeegiiptv 5 euro monthly and u got all movie and service streaming
Yeah I was asked about iptv, and will do some vids on it I think.
EndrynalPlex for me, it does everything I need it to and I don't have any hassle with file names. it just picks it up. and even if there is a mismatch I can still manually change it to what I want
It's really built for ease of use.
ErikaWhen swapping from Plex to Jellyfin, is it possible to also transfer my watched history? It would be nice to not have to make a note where I left off on some series
Fro. Plex to jellyfin, yes there are tools that you can use to migrate, but file and folder names have to be the same or it won't work, and jellyfin has a fenickety file name structure requirement
xoro.racerdoes jellyfin have function similar to 'analyze' in plex for loudness and subtitle auto sync?
twindongzwhy not just have both?
silI have simple needs and have been using Kodi forever.
/dev/nullI don’t understand how anyone finds Jellyfin hard tbh
JointedJointedYou can remote access with Plex either with upnp/nat-pmp or using a ssh tunnel.
Jordan O'MearaRecently set up plex. Works well so far
I'm a fan
For91days Travel Blog & PhotosAre you on CRITICKER?
Tea_baggin_ukI hope Plex goes out of business since charging for remote
Tea_baggin_ukJellyfin is great but such a pain to set up with Tailscale etc.
RowanThe deal breaker for me is the login/auth for Plex is centralised so if your internet connection goes down you can't access local media via the player. Which is absurd.
I did a video on how to get around that, just fyi
MtotheatothedoubletEmby is so easy to setup
Ralerasaive had a problem with free plex that i could not watch more than 2mins in a row of my media. so, i had to play for 2mins, than it exits media, and i play again, and it continues where i stoped (that 2mins from before). and jellyfin dont do that, it plays whole media with o problem.
Blue V Guarana Energy Drinkxbmp was before xbmc
TNwhere does stremio fit into your first chart? is it like plex/jellyfin or kodi/emby?
freakPlex is a fork of xbmc, not Kodi. It was originally created as osxbmc, a fork for Macs. xbmc didn't become Kodi until about 5 years later.
StatAvgNothing easy about plex unless you pay them money to unlock hardcore gpu decoding, which is insane
kendostick70deluge to torrent, VPN, snowfl.com and no issues
ScootsNot gonna touch on all the security incidents with Plex? Or mention that they keep shifting free features to paid features?
Jaxx ❌I think you should tell people that all they need is an old spare computer. You don’t need all this docker stuff you don’t need Linux . Just windows and maybe a spare 10 TB drive. Hook up a VPN, put in sonar radar and Plex and the Plex pass is worth it. Everything in your house and anybody you add to Plex can use the watchlist feature which you tie into sonar and radar. You don’t need anything else.
ChimmyJim ☭I use LibreELEC and love it
RamaqlaaWhenever I sleep and wake up my pc, plex in my TV can't connect to the server and I have to close and open the process. Also, having to manually update library is also a pain. It forces me to go upstairs in between episodes to update when they finish downloading
heartroar 🍉Switched to Jellyfin recently on Apple devices no issues and not looking back.
Nice
michaelsmith1123excellent review, just what i needed
Heath AllynI tried to convert to jellyfin but went back to plex. Jellyfin was just a huge PITA at every step. Remote access was more of a pain. Deal breaker was that it would not recognize shows in the root “tv” folder. They had to be in their own subfolder for each show which didn’t work with my automated workflow.
Yeah, I've heard that
Heath AllynAlso I only use plex free. It does suck that remote access got moved behind the paywall though. I’d rather just Remote Desktop in and transfer a file to my Dropbox than deal with jellyfin’s hoops though. I really wanted to love jellyfin.
JUst used Cloudflare tunnels to access the Plex remote, its got some TOS issue but honestly if its just you, its not going to register.
Aaron McNeil559vlc?
JCI dropped Plex. Had been using it for many years but then the started charging for remote access. Then, after another update, I lost my server and had to do a bunch of bs steps to “recover it”. They all failed. So, F it. I canceled my subscription, deleted my account and went to Jellyfin. Sure not as nice, but it gets the job done FOR FREE!
BowieABSAll these services are a headache, I just use Kodi and a standard Windows SMB server and works perfectly, no transcoding or anything
Or use Streemio, even easier
Sonny MurrayI have plex at home and we don’t have to have an internet connection to make it work. I also payed for a lifetime subscription, so that as well. I’m using a 16TB nas server and have hundreds of titles more like a thousand. Sharing is easy to my family and friends. Only problem is my 1000/50 the upload speed sux. But right now NBN is giving us free upload boost. So it now 1000/100 in AU.
Ouch, 50 up is painful.
GoranSTREMIO
I'm doing a video on it, yeah Streemio is great.
Johnny BronxJellyfin is easy and free.
ham and cheesemain plex, jellyfin as backup
ham and cheesejust use both
BrandonI use Plex, I have the lifetime pass. it's great, I use it for home movies and share with my less than tech savvy family. It's easy for them to get going on their own. I also use Plex Amp to stream my iTunes library on all my devices.
ЭдяPlex recently got a data breach, you know you I’m going with
HiiJaxlast time I tried jellyfin, it was alright. the biggest problem I had was with it scanning my library. I have a big one and it'd take FOREVER, or just straight up miss random media or metadata. things got messy. playback was usually fine, sometimes worked even better than plex due to better format support. at the end of the day though, I'm running Plex, and glad I got a lifetime pass a while ago
Emil Johanssoni recently spent 2 full days trying to get gpu transcoding to work on plex before i realized it was a paid feature.
Kniqht_ArtoriasBut what about Plex Lifetime vs Jellyfin?
ClownstyleHere since XBMC! Tried premium Plex but couldn't get transcoding working. Switched to Jellyfin on my Unraid server a while ago and transcoding just works!
Wilplex breaks without internet. there's a work around but it is a hassle.
I did a video a few ones back, you just add your local network IP range in the settings, takes only a few clicks.
Mickey KnowledgyI use Kodi on my Android TV.
ScottJellyfin is buggy and ugly. and still can't get it to work on the Xbox series. you need to enable developer mode on a Tizen TV and force the install Jellyfin on it. not very user friendly.
ChicFilAyyyWhy would you compare Plex and Jellyfin but not include Emby?
I'm going to do a kodi and emby video :)
grackleboiPlex was okay like 10 years ago, but I switched from plex to jellyfin this year and it's so much better. Jellyfin is also easier to set up, and runs better than flex. Remote access can easily be set up with a VPN or port forwarding.
GuntherJellyfin + Infuse = 👌
Jared👾☠️👾🦇I currently use plex (free tier) for my in home streaming and it works great 99% of the time and the only issues I’ve ran into have been more so with my clients than the server side of things. It’s much more of a “it just works” situation than having to go through the process of setup for jellyfin.
False Claims Of Maturity 🇿🇦I just want something to manage my family's personal media - photos and family videos. I want something my family that is spread across the globe to have a private place to share and store things
a_wolferazI have a lifetime plex pass and my TV doesn’t have a jellyfin app. So that’s what I use but most people should use Jellyfin.
DJ MartrixI just started using JF, it's not too bad, there's a few minor things I wish it had that Plex has, but it's been a bit more stable then Plex of late. don't know what Plex has done with it's recent updates but it's crashing more then ever
kon1234570Are you sure about history of Plex? I remember using OSXBMC on Mac mini.
Monster Truck DadWho can plan DV? That is the question because Plex cannot
Not sure what you mean?
Monster Truck DadPlex can't transcode Dolby Vision due to licensing. Can Jellyfin?
StatAvgJellyfin has no issues with any DV expect for DV 8.6
StatAvgYep
Lord of WinsterJellyfin doesnt work with apple tv so whats the point in using it
You could use the infuse player, that's built for Apple and will work with a jellyfin server.
Lord of WinsterThat's just silly when you can just use plex
GrenBurlEmby and Jellyfin are both easy as hell to setup and don't require plugins like you say. remote access is also simple to setup.
GrenBurljellyfin wasn't a fork really. it was started by developers that were working on Emby project when it was open source, and those devs left cause they wanted things to stay open source, so they took their code and started jellyfin.
Plex server's is easy to set up you need putty and the login for Linux of course
you could use a free IPTV software to xtream code to apps Kodi iOS m3u VLC player
True
Thokak_LothmodWhat is a plugin
kbgoodnessGPU encoding is irrelevant with a newer cpu
fatpappawhat can you use besides these two
QuetzalcoatlBack in the day I had my media server with Plex and Raspberry Pi.
@🐝Prinler🐝someone else's plex always a win
cuppyIf it werent for having to have to have an internet connection plex would win hands down. And no you can’t configure it. No matter how you put your local lan ips in you still need to sign in especially on the apple tv app
Ahamed Nishadhtried both. jellyfin was easier for me to setup, configure, run and maintain.. 😂
player2nationsave you the test though it would be short, localhost:it's port or ip address: it's port will work offline, but otherwise no. You have to use the website and your server is offline. I always seen jellyfin as the media player you could "rent" to people better then plex, as plex only allows upto 30 or 34 users to one account. where jellyfin's max is your setup and internet connection. I wanted to "rent" my media as an ultra cheap Netflix for people around me but DMCA and copyright has me scared lol
BigPandaimo paying for the plex lifetime pass is worth it.
Mullet.MonsterJellyfish is free, so that’s what I roll. It’s not that hard either.
MichaelPlex has been going downhill for years. So many people are only sticking to it due to sunk costs.
user7627367152537What about Boxee?
Is it still around?
user7627367152537lol no, unfortunately. It was really good. Not sure where it fits into the forked ecosystems.
BergFx🥱 stremio
GuyguyI had Plex with Raid's and dvr's etc but got sick of the lot. Ended up with Syncler+ with Real-debris. Stream everything for about $70 per year.👍
S1190I went for jellyfin for my home audio streamer. It took about an hour to set up and work
PolarBlairTechPlex free version doesn’t have the feature you set up plex for; remote access. It’s an easy choice.
You can use Cloudflare but yeah it can be a deal breaker.
Andrew LongMedia Brower -> MB (emby)
va龙魂Well Serviio is better than both. If you make good ffmpeg wrapper, you are unstopable!!
va龙魂If you put qBittorrent web and sort downloads in corrct folder it’s easy and fast media managment setup
nerdmman_TVi love not seeing my pirate software here, means it's less likely to get taken down
Lakelife@BenjaminSPowell I saw on the beginning of the video, Emby and kodi. Are you planning on covering these as well?
Yes I will
Razi AvelI’ve been using plex since you had to mess around with the Apple TV dns settings so you could use one of the Apple apps (trailers?) to access your stuff on Plex. I copped the lifetime subscription a few years ago on one of their Xmas/Black Friday sales but I don’t use any of the paid features other than remote access when not at home. For me, using it solely to catalogue and watch media I own both in & out of my home, plex is perfect.
Razi AvelPlus my TV I don’t have an Apple TV plugged into has a native plex app which is fab!
Jason40404 ĮI like the infuse app on Apple TV. Requires no software on pc. Just point it towards the network folder with movies or tv show s
Jason40404 ĮOhh it’s free also. The subscription adds some other features like trailers but works fine in the free mode
jane 💕😭😭😭
keuryI just want to watch movies not download them. I wish there were like sources for jellyfin
Try Streemio, but it's a sepeate application
keuryyeaaa im onto that, I'm doing a plug in with febbox and xprime.
ArthurRun them both. Then pick plex.
colby cheeJellyfin doesn't have any downsides though... I set it up and I'm an idiot.
iPiraguaJellyfin just because I didn't like the changes they made and all the ads/channel things
LPR-01thank you for this breakdown so many people are intimidated by open source and you did a great job of being honest about the limitations but also advantages of it
fw013sb5np5athere's some weird stereo echo/reverb effect on the audio for this video.
coinopanimatorplex removing remote access (plexamp) after paying for it really bothered me.
SickmrexWish they all had Kodi's .rar support
KTSpeedrunsJellyfin really isn't that hard.
CanucksBig L for plex: they recently took away the “Watch Togethe” feature. That was the tipping point for me to consider Jellyfin.
Trackpro_Emby all the way baby 🥰
Vilagussyno jellyfyn apple tv app
It sucks.
Saakibaby🔥
Nothing ng I have tried matches the simplicity and durability of UMS.
AngeloAy I would love to be add to Plex server library too watch enjoy tv show and movies it’s easy to use and amazing quality to
jhabneyI appreciate the info..looking to build a media center
Matthew BrabhamYou can set Plex to not require a login for your subnet. Ran into this when my Internet was out for an upgrade and I couldn't watch shows. Unfortunately, I didn't set this up ahead of time.
Lucas JedPlayStation supports DLNA no? use the DLNA plugin
Jedi Hagridif you have the free Plex you also can't cast to your Chromecast
Fix MYPlex if you got the plex pass for lifetime. Jellyfin if you missed the opportunity
OmnibarDoes jellyfin allow you to download content to your device? I use that feature all the time on my phone and iPads. My kids iPads are loaded with kids movies that they can watch offline on trips and stuff.
Can you transfer media to one or the other so you can utilize both ? Brand new to all of this but can learn if it not too complicated
XiI use Jellyfin, it's my main...the problem is apps. I have to pay for ones that work well and even on Android the ones like Findroid don't even support playlists...so I have to use 2 apps depending on what I want to watch. Plus random plugins on jellyfin will just not work depending on compatibility, like intro skip features. I feel like once a month I have to fix a Jellyfin issue. Or I could just buy a Plex lifetime pass and not have to worry. Even a yearly pass is better because they have so much better app support across all devices and operating systems. I've tried Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby...Jellyfin is nice for a fully free option if you're okay with subpar apps or community made apps (or just pay a few bucks a year for Infuse on Apple devices), Plex is just way more user friendly.
Xitl;dr Jellyfin's apps (not on web) suck compared to Plex's. Infuse is the only good one I've found and it's still a paid app for all the features and iOS/Apple TV only
there is no free speechjellyfin is open source.... therefore, better
ArmandoAkimboJust like GIMP is better than Photoshop
beeradmooreThe true underrated champion here is ffmpeg 😂
100% its what powers everything!
Maximum PowerWanted to use Jellyfin but there was no app for my TV. Went with Em by and couldn't be happier
MasonThe only advantage plex has for me is a PS5 app, since Sony makes it harder for smaller services
🗡 AldinWindows Media Center and Windows Home Server, were the days. I with they remake the Windows Home Server again.
🗡 AldinI’m using JellyFin now, works like a charm, using my M1 MacMini as the server. Unfortunately they don’t have a client for AppleTV, there is a paid 3rd party client for AppleTV
everynoneJellyfin is hard??????
Tonys_DenialEXEMakes me miss the days of PS3 and the native media server services.
notyourwardeni prefer Jellyfin. it suits my needs. i can see other people’s needs being suited by Plex. or Emby. 🤷
W1ldAustinI've had friends who use Plex say if they didn't have lifetime Plex passes, they would switch to Jellyfin after the Plex updates the last year for non Plex pass holders
Yeah Plex is a commercial entity so they will over time do things to encourage users to pay.
AustinEmby > *. Jellyfin wishes it could work as well as Emby does.
dnkykngstrJellyfin good but fidgety. I like it
Gabbbbb-_.Lost 2 years on omv6, now i’ts unraid, and plex…
Im a BIG unraid fan.
DukeSilverEasy, plex if you want to easily share your library with others. Jellyfin if you are keeping it to yourself.
Kindred Spiritonce jellyfin has an app on TVs and phones that make it seamless like plex. im 100% making the jump, but im a tv movie enjoyer and jellyfin just isn't the same
Breadcamonly system i know where jellyfin doesnt have a tv client is samsung tv. i get the app on roku
Caffeinated Code DadJellyfin's UX/UI isn't great but it's kind free
Moltherionplex is just easier to use, and I dont need any of their paid services. base plex works just fine.
GrayI bought Plex lifetime years ago and I love it.
Adam’s LabInstalled Jellyfin, it just worked 🤷♂️
Stu MaschwitzMy issue with Plex is that I paid for the lifetime plan years ago, but every time I open it, they conveniently forget my preferences and show me all their crap instead of my stuff.
TechMakesArtEmby
chuckleberryfinnI'm right there with you. we use our ps5 as our media device in the living room. Plex is the only option that would work for us
Go with what works, thats my opinion.
ThePotatoKingIf only plex could figure out their Apple product support and not stutter constant. Until then jellyfin it is.
mike.Got Plex lifetime like a dozen years ago for $75 bucks. Works great. Plex is easy enough my non-technical people can use it.
SamJellyfin has a terrible UI compared to plex but honestly the only thing keeping me on plex is app support, it supports way more devices than jellyfin. I hope that changes soon
thestonedgamer420Plex is so much better
Jeff JohnsonJellyfins user interface is hot garbage and it doesn’t have anywhere near the sort, features or control of your media that Plex has
GuacAndRollit is much more difficult to go to my in-laws house and log into Jellyfin and play stuff from my home server. I prefer Jellyfin but Plex is much easier to use remotely. I run both concurrently
SoulifiedI like using Plex just for the ease of onboarding new users. I can give them their credentials and they can download the app on any device without issue.
Breadcami have the same experience on jellyfin. only system i dont get an app for is samsung tv.
Porco RossoPlex music app (plexamp) flat out doesn’t work on iOS anymore. Jellyfin music app (finamp) does. Also idk what plugins you think jellyfin needs. Jellyfin does everything that I used plex for right out of the box
zhongzhouit's a matter of time before Plex turns heal and no longer allows hosted content. they're trying hard to be a company that can make money
iamacatguyYou don't have to pay to stream jellyfin on mobile and it is all local accounts. it works perfectly without an Internet connection. Jellyfin for the win.
Booterplex is closed source software that you run and hope that they continue to allow you to do what you want. it relies on external servers outside your control. jellyfin is completely open source and runs on your device with no external connections to any other server. and you don't have to worry that an update will break things because you can just roll back. You're not relying on a for-profit company for access to your own media. this isn't even a debate. this is just: do you want to have a proper media server or do you want to trust a third party to have your best interest in heart.
chakritwTailscale for the login to hime network problem
Tailscale is fantastic.
Nathan Davisjellyfin has book support as well which Plex does not have. Plex can be made to work for audiobooks as a music library, but absolutely no ebooks. jellyfin has a few small glitches with books, but it works very well
Samantha pumpernickelFOSS will always be my choice
FOSS for life
Just_RandomI've been curious about Jellyfin for a bit but I use plex mostly because I've had it for like 10 years at this point, I bought a lifetime pass a couple of months in (it was much cheaper then) and haven't bothered to really look at Jellyfin.
appleuser32592664Infuse.
I have both and Plex is way bigger of a pain in the ass jellyfin is actually easier
DemiDylan"If you just want something to work, go with Plex." -- thank you, this is exactly what I needed to hear.
Grahaalso very unfortunate is that newer samsung smart TVs can’t get jellyfin, but can get plex
pandapwrrrLifetime Plex user since 2018.. worth every dime. I set up Jellyfin every 6 months to see how far it's gotten and I still have zero desire to switch
rccb626I bit the bullet and got a lifetime pass for plex before the price hike
Dalek ☕✨I just don't like a lack of MFA on jellyfin unless I get a plugin and deploy & maintain something for it. MFA has been in planned since 2023 😔🥀 also weird issues with audio and subtitles not lining up sometimes where the same media on Plex has no issues. one day I'll switch for sure but not yet for me 😔
AlexPlex interface, broken sign-on, and dead in the water product announcements just killed it for me. I don't care what they do in the future at this point, I won't use it again.
James Cochranboxee box for life
acertainawkwardotakuplex has a ps5 app
Dark Side Designsbeen using plex for like 10 years, works well enough
DaiShimaVT Tea Cooking Vtuberthere is a weird side thing for those of us that bought lifetime Plex years ago it makes Plex an acceptable option
TheDriver6 (Taylor’s Version)Plex user for like 15 years. It’s awful now. Bloated, buffers and stalls randomly when my hardware is insanely overpowered.
clientPlex lifetime pass for 55~$ tried jellyfin didn’t scratch the itch and hated how it was missing from some devices of some family members.
Slevin_Kelevra70I’ve had Plex for about six years now I bought the lifetime Plex pass as soon as I got it so I don’t wanna pay a monthly subscription like nowadays
GetElevatedM8Plex lifetime is the only option. Do you want to watch movies or build a server and troubleshoot a plugin that stopped getting updates 2 years ago? Be techy with your storage.
weirdpicklesSo don’t use plug ins? Plex has them too. I bet most people running plex are also running some kind of Arr app as well these days, which necessitates tinkering. Everyone else just uses a debrid service because they think they won’t be caught even when real debrid was out there doxxing their own users for getting mouthy about them online.
GetElevatedM8You’re overlapping use cases here. Last time I checked out jellyfin I needed to install a plugin to skip intros that only worked on the webUI. I do have a full arr stack with requesting, but I wouldn’t expect plex to bake that in for more obvious reasons. From my expierence: ~90TB, 10 users maxing 4 simultaneous; jellyfin is a project all on its own as to plex is a platform.
Levi LippincottAs an exclusive Plex Premium user for many years now I can comfortably say that if you are offline away from home and using one of your devices that you have previously logged into it still works. Like on my phone on airplane mode while traveling last month my downloaded content worked great.
Levi LippincottI will say I haven’t upgraded the iOS app since the big update a few months back, I had to actually downgrade the app due to what they broke with the TV episode downloads. I haven’t upgraded since to see if that’s been fixed.
GurgodargenI've been using Jellyfin for a good while now. It's fantastic, and only gets better with time. Also, iirc, they have been adding some core features that previously required plug-ins. . Also, there's a roku app, if you've got one!
OmnibarYes, with plex if you don’t have internet to your home internet it won’t work. So that is a drawback. But I’ve used it for 10 years and I’ve had a lifetime membership for probably 6 or so.
That sucks BUT I have seen comments on how to solve for that, ill research more and update when I know how it is done.
OmnibarI think it still works if you’re on like a PC and you are connecting to the actual server, but for a Roku or Amazon stick they need internet to authenticate.
Sonny MurrayMine works without a connection in the house
WeldedMachina2I bought a Plex lifetime pass years ago only to discover they wouldn't honor it on any other device I own. Never another cent to those thieves
WillFulI had no difficulty setting up jellyfin the hardest part for me was setting my the file share so it wasn’t open to everyone. Maybe it’s because I have a beefy cpu so I didn’t have to fiddle with any gpu encoding? It just worked for me
Yeah power goesa long way to making it just work.
AugustinarisI like plex because it's so simple, and I can watch my movies from anywhere. I tried Jellyfin a few years ago, and couldnt got it to work out.
hunterzuelMy biggest thing is Plex reporting on what I’m watching to other people, Jellyfin doesn’t spy on you.
SamYou can turn it off and it isn’t that deep
jwoodman1332plex is also a nanny company. they can ban your isp host and no consequences like they did for hetzner hosting.
XandermanSo glad I bought the lifetime Plex back when it was $75 during a Black Friday sale.
Ryan329Same here, bought it back in 2015 and haven't had any regrets. Tried Jellyfin for a bit but being so used to Plex made Jellyfin feel "wrong". Not to mention since I actually share my server with not tech literate people Plex having 1st party support makes it a FAR better program
XandermanIf they took away remote streaming from family and friends for lifetime users it would have been a huge disaster.
BarkBarklington💯
DJ_RoyelI got it like 10 years ago for like 150 for the lifetime pass, so happy I got it then
Daniel Ebbenunraid lifetime. Plex lifetime. nzbgeek lifetime DS lifetime.
Ikouit's only life time for as long as they want it to be lol.
Xanderman😑 next time instead of sharing your thoughts you should buy a kite and fly it during a thunderstorm
Daniel Ebbendrunken slug.
BusinessYeah, I was going to say the same thing, i want to say about the lifetime plex back in 2011. I've bounced around to other ones that have come out. I've just always been happy with running plex, and since I got in so early. I never had to worry about those issues.
David 57I use both. jellyfin is for me and plex is my wife. I like control and she likes it easy.
Once Plex started offering even less, after asking for even more, it stopped being a question of convenience or ease of use. I own my media and i will use it how i like it. They can keep their corporate shit out of my business
SkylerPlex lifetime is well worth it
W1ldAustinIMO, when it was like $95 it was worth it, not at the current price
Nostalgic VibesDefinitely not worth the 250 price tag considering you have to buy all your own server equipment and hdds
SkylerI got in when it was like 80 🤷♂️
Lucky.
SkylerDefinitely, I didn’t realize the price had climb that high
AustinStereoYou know what’s easiest? Just put the files on network storage and connect with Kodi via smb
JakeI found plex first so I went with that and got a lifetime pass on sale almost a decade ago for dirt cheap. It is now expensive so I get that. Also it’s far easier for my elderly parents to handle plex so for that I’m glad I went with that rather than having to set up tailscale for them to access it and risk my dad messing something up and me having tot try to remote fix it.
mon amie: you are not addressing the arrogance of plex customer service. the why i switched to jellyfin. also it was super buggy on nvidia
I've had no experience with the CS team there, so I cant really say.
EatCodeSleepRepeatI didn’t find any issues with Jellyfin, it was super simple
I Am Bobby HillThank you for this; I'm in the process of building my media server & digitizing my physical media library and haven't fully decided which program I'll be using. I am learning towards Plex because I already have the app on my Samsung smart TV but, I am going to wait to see if they have a sale on black Friday or during Xmas before purchasing it. If it doesn't go on sale, I'll probably go jellyfin & just muddle through figuring out how to set it all up.
Sounds like a decent plan.
Artificial_SnakeLifetime pass with Plex - best money I’ve ever spent
TentoI paid for Plex long time ago...idk if it be worth switching over to jellyfin
Frankie the thirdI have a lifetime subscription to Plex I got 10 years ago, but I haven't opened it in years, the daily updates got too much
EpicLPerTried Jellyfin just for the "Watch Together" feature, turns out it barely even worked and buffered constantly for some of the people watching (gigabit connection btw) and desynced... uninstalled...
Mo FotaStick to Kodi or Jellyfin, others are troubles more than benefit, donate if you like how it works
Daemonjellyfin is great, but dies the more media you add, takes forever to load the index. Plex doesn't have this issue
Fren_readsOnly issue I'm having with Jellyfin is subtitles aren't showing up for some reason. You can see that there are subtitle files (embedded, srt in same folder, or from the opensubtitles plugin) but subs don't actually show when the movie is playing. Need to troubleshoot and hopefully get it working. I don't mind having to tinker to get it to work. Any tips?
Unfortunatly not, All i can say is check the settings maybe, or worst case, unisntall and reinstall. I don't really have much more than that, sorry
Fren_readsFigured it out partly. Used the Extract subtitle plugin and it's working for some files now. I'll keep tinkering till I get it for all! The satisfaction when you finally get it done can't be beat imo
Sonny MurrayWith plex if I have a movie without subs, I’ll just go into it and it will download subs for me in a second
Fren_readsCongratulations. I don't use Plex. Thanks for your contribution anyway.
Yeah, sometimes it's not great, so having a dedicated source for subs is helpful.
Sonny MurrayDidn’t read it correctly, I’ll start again. Is the .SRT file in the same location as the movie, not in a folder? Also in the old days I used to copy the movie name and paste it on the sub,so it automatically reads it
Pastime ParadisePlex then use infuse to access it. Plex used to be fantastic then they changed their ui recently on iPad and it sucks now. But infuse is way better and uses the same Plex server data
Im 100% going to have to investigate Infuse
Circular-Tonic🇨🇦SovereignPlex life time Pass 💛👌
Winner
Finnif you have older ppl or non techie using your media, Jellyfin isnt even an option sadly i feel. it needs to be more streamlined and user-friendly for that unless you want to use time helping on setup.
Yeah Plex is the one to use if you aren't technical, that much is for sure.
Sławekserviio check
Interesting
PilleTeam Jellyfin + Infuse ^^
RichieThe only "issue" I had with Jellyfin is the TV app, it was trivial for me but I have a system running Docker on the same network. For others it might be a total pain.
Stuoh... I had a machine which was the hardware pre-emby thing. but I can not remember the name at all. it was a decent bit of kit, but died because I couldn't get updated codecs on it. EMBY is spot on and works on all my devices. oh .. and this was my first network media player
dannysoul1Use plex if you want unknown errors and paid features. Or simply use jellyfin
MarkiñanoI use emby as it's a steady host and once linked to Kodi I use arctic horizon 2 with some great widgets for continue watching etc
Luke at ATXBrosI miss Windows Media centre ngl. It was my cable box, DVR, live TV, DVD player, BluRay player and played my movie rips. But now I use Jellyfin, cable TV and PlayStation 5 for streaming.
Aaron.555Get jellyfin in a browser 🥰
Aaron.555Love jellyfin,
RoXas XIIII recently switched to jellyfin(I use mostly the Kodi addon on all my devices even phone) and it's so great to me everything works great, yes you need to do some work with but when you done it's great and never failed once to me.
For some people they want easy, for others its all about customisation
RoXas XIIIit's fair, I used to think that way too, now I'm more into jellyfin because I kinda like doing it "my own", I still have Plex as reserve(not paid). plus for my use, that's just a few movies and series I ripped from my own physical copies it's more then enough.
Tinkering and customisation is my life now, so I totally agree.
kupaupascboth are thrash and buggy but at least jellyfish is free
True
James 🌱Emby on top. Ain’t no way I’m paying just to use gpu decoding or to allow movies to be watched outside of my local network.
Fair point
MuffinzCatI use both and for now plez is easier, I'm happy with jellyfin, but it doesn't seem to want to work on my dad's smart tv
MuffinzCatalso the amount of plugins for jellyfin is a little bit disappointing to me
DejavooooIve set up kodi….Next stop jellyfin
pufalonestreamio🔥
Winning.
Darren MelvertonI use arch BTW
nabeelrPlex doesn't work though. It's riddled with bugs that have been around for damn near a decade.
What ones? I've not had any issues
nabeelrplayback issues, subtitle decoding issues, audio decoding issues, issues with syncing play states between the apps, issues with transcoding, issues with selecting the playback bitrate... on and on and on. many of these bugs are longstanding, and have gone unaddressed.
Well, that's quite a list
nabeelrI believe a few different news media outlets have actually documented a few of these problems.
SteveCorbettI’ve never had a single issue with Plex, played all kinds of files, 264, 265, can stream from PC to my TV and phone with zero issues 🤷♂
nabeelryou're a lucky minority.
SteveCorbettPlex had a massive customer base, you’re in the minority
nabeelrit's legitimately stuff that's made the tech media/news... so... 😅
DyishHappy Plex User here.
rymdhundHow do I got Jellyfin to work on ATV though? Doesn’t have a native app :(
That I think is one of the drawbacks of Jellyfin. There may be some workarounds but im not sure.
taylor 🦊Plex, the product everyone knows is not a fork of Kodi. The company did originally start out making a fork of Kodi (or XBMC as it was known at the time), but that was a Mac & Windows desktop app, not a media server system like most people think of Plex as, and was discontinued in 2015.
Facts.
natronJellyfin is terrible because it insists you name your files EXACTLY how it wants otherwise it’s like they don’t exist. I’m not going to change my file and folder structure that I’ve had for 20+ years to an
natronobjectively worse structure just so it will play nice with my media software. Plex Just Works™️
Naomiwhat??? i dont have that issue, jellyfin does everything for me
natronYeah exactly, you don’t know what you’re doing. I do.
JaceHoly projection!
natronWhere is the projection?
StatAvgThat hasn’t been a real jellyfin limitation for like 3 years
natronI installed it a month ago. I ran into the issue. I went to the Jellyfin support discord and they insisted I name my files and folders exactly as the Jellyfin documentation wants. Point out to me where it’s not a limitation and hasn’t been for “like 3 years”.
Bluchip StudioWhat's your issue lol I have files with show-season-episode and I have files with group-season-episode-show never had an issue with custom named files as for folders I have media - series -- show name --- season 1 --- season 2 - movies -- genre horror -- genre action lol you can have any folder structure you want
natronNot according to official Jellyfin support
QuiteTomI dread to think the horrors of your filenames and/or directory structures if this is a problem for you 😂 also - who isn't automating that sort of thing these days?
I saw a comment about this, filefow is an automated solution no?
natronPeople with standards. Also I don’t understand what you mean by horrors of file names and directory structures when mine are literally perfect and that’s why it’s dumb that Jellyfin doesn’t like them?
JamrockwarriorNot an issue. I've just recently started using jellyfin. About a week ago and I just download files and they work. The only problem I have is with anime but I've got a fix for it. The anime don't show up but I think I needed a anime plugin. You just have to set up your folders and allow meta data collection automatically
I have a feeling that there are ways around that, BUT I don't know what those ways are though.
zthat's simply not true, you just didn't set up the damn thing right 😂
natronI think I know what happened to ME better than some random on the internet, thanks.
zI'm not saying it didn't happen cutiepie, don't get your panties in a twist. I'm just saying you're attributing it to a flaw in the software that simply doesn't exist for anyone else.
FüllfederhalterJellyfin is equally simple to set up. I pay for software when it‘s worth. Plex isn‘t worth a penny as Jellyfin, out-of-the-box, can do the same for free.
I think it can be intimidating to the less technically inclined.
phtevenwhen I had Plex installed and had an internet outage I was in fact not able to view Plex via my TV for example. that was what broke the camel's back for me and made me switch over to jellyfin
That is what I was thinking, and really not great at all. Such a pain and enough to make me move.
MilokuttyKodi is the best ! for me 🤩😍
Koni is great
Milokuttysince xbmc days always been a fan and never stopped using it 😁
LosvikeNbeen running plex since 2014, got a lifetime pass for like $70 back in 2016-17. 40~ish users very happy with it. if i were to set up a media server today, i might've gone with jellyfin, hard to say
HOnestly Plex is just so simple, and if you're not wanting to have remote access, then Free version is totally fine.
GrahamfEmby is better then Jellyfin, plain and simple
What are the features you think are best?
Archie VonArchiebaby you can run both I do
Super boss level media management!
JayI purchased life time plex. Yes i love open source.. but damn it’s easy and on every smart TV with easy login
It really is.
BeanWish I hopped on that
Same
b888888888888888888plex barely runs and has difficulty streaming 4k on my Chromecast with google tv but jellyfin runs perfectly so it's jellyfin for me until Plex is optimised
OmnibarYou likely have issues with your settings or your network. I stream 4k just fine
SuperDuperCompooper/user42069honestly nothing beats bash and vlc
Skills.
KalthulhuhexOS
I prefer Unraid over Hex tbh.
Roy Jamesplex is better because you can install on nearly all products, jellyfin pc and phone
Thats a pro feature, thats for sure.
Roy Jamesnope standard with plex
j.woofI miss windows media centre.
Same, simpler times...
Henry8268I got Plex and the lifetime pass well before I knew about jellyfin and have tried it but the easier remote play on Plex has kept me there
Andi CristianEmby premiere is everything I need ..
beeradmooreI was a long time Plex user and tried Jellyfin. Horrible experience, Plex just works. People say “but jellyfin is free and open source”, so? How much is your time worth setting it up? How often are you building from source? 🤷♂️. IMO Plex lifetime pass is well worth the coin for what you get
If you have the time or the incliation Jellyfin, if you want one click Plex.
beeradmooreI have too many side projects to bother putting time into Jellyfin to have it do the exact same thing at the end of the day. Aside from privacy and that you mentioned, are there extra things Jellyfin plugins can do that Plex? Ironically an older side project I had was I used some Plex plugins and wrote some custom tools to download the entirety of RoosterTeeth before their shutdown so I now have all 42TB of it locally 😂
DanSet up both two months ago, took me about the same amount of time setting up.
beeradmooreSorry, I didn’t mean people are or have to. I meant that people use it as a selling point like they do for Android, when they actively have no plans to view build or contribute the source. Last time I used Jellyfin it didn’t pull in the metadata of my shows correctly and of the ones it did it failed to get most of the art for the shows and seasons. When I looked for support it was a whole bunch of rabbit holes and unanswered threads (not that Plex doesn’t have their fair share of these). Maybe things have changed in the past 2 years 🤷♂️
beeradmooreMy jellyfin was pre-arr, just manually ripped and named shows as per Plex recommended naming structure. Not sure if it was the structure it didn’t like or if whatever it used to get metadata was broken. But yeah, it was bad.
Ryan329Also add, "if you want 1 click for your family, use Plex". Getting family on Jellyfin was awful in comparison (also the Plex UI just clicked with them more)
JointedJointedI tried jellyfin and it was always a headache. I can't tell you how many times I had to redo the server address in a month. I now use Plex with a private tracker and seedbox. No issues.
Sleepy SaviorI just want to be able to switch between my account and my kids account without going through a sign in process every time. especially when the kids account isnt even set up with a password.
Shane Michael FoleyJellyfin makes my cpu go brrrrrr even when idle. I just gave in and paid the premium lifetime for plex
bobbobby1508Plex has never worked.
DroxtorHave both. Plex is easier to setup for friends and family.
Tom 🇨🇦I didn’t realize that Emby came from WMC / MB. Thanks for the info. I had assumed it was a fork of Plex.
bill_jk_90Jellyfin app UI is hideous and borderline useless on many of the platforms I’ve tried. I fully switched from plex to jellyfin, and switched back. Everyone who uses my media complained about not terrible the UI was. It felt like a shitty 2nd compsci project. I had to use arrows to move a mouse on Xbox, while plex has a beautiful modern look and feel.
LexiI retired my Plex, even though I'm a lifetime pass member... Infuse on Apple TV pisses all over Plex nowadays...
I have been hearing about Infuse, it doesn't manage all the meta through does it?
LexiNope it pulls the metadata which is a shame but it is very accurate and tidy and meets my sort of standards for organisation. However, your mileage may vary...
Thomasnow you make me wanna go back and try jelly fin again. I tried it like five or six years ago and had it running parallel with Plex but like you said, Plex is available and easier for end users who arent tech savvy
Its worth a play at the least.
SIMPLY3Djellyfin is easier than Plex to setup 🤣🤣
williami tried plex and the ui is way to bulky compaired to jellyfin
benPlex forked before xbmc became kodi. I remember when it first started and was Mac build, it was great now wouldn’t go near it. Jellyfin isn’t hard to setup but it leaves you to do it
Alexi GarciaNot the same solution, but a NAS + Infusion (Apple TV app) is glorious.
Infusion is interesting
Alexi GarciaIt’s Infuse btw, autocorrect changed it and I didn’t notice.
Naefun 🏴🇵🇸jellyfin is FOSS end of question for me personally. No idea what anyone is on about it being difficult. Debian server Jellyfin docker took me half a day to get it setup and it's been seamless since. Only real issue (for some) is the lack of client side being on app stores.
For technical people its very straight forward, for the less technical, it can be a little daunting.
VonHaggisI used WMC and Xbox for years, Then Kodi, then Plex and emby, Eventually switched to Jellyfin, Ran into alot of database issues over time and eventually went back to Plex, But I do prefer Jellyfin
Penettone DubáiEmby and not looking back. Running on docker container - rpi5, exposed to internet on random port and connections restricted to own country and specific SNI. Apps available for almost any platform. Modern interface and all the features you may need. No dependence on third party accounts unlike Plex.
TechMakesArtYes! When I was going through this comparison a year ago, I found that Emby > jellyfin and plex.
Miraskaall you need is CopyParty and Kodi. No transcoding, only http and very cheap computer
mtardispYou can configure Plex to skip the “call home” on local network. You just have to configure it in your settings with the IP address range. Otherwise it will always call home.
Interesting, I wonder if this is a way to get around the signin issues, if you have no internet connectivity on sign in.
mtardispYep it works. Had telco issues a few months ago, 2 days no internet. Still able to use Plex locally 😊
Uncle SquidFormer Plex user, Jellyfin convert and would never go back.
sockmonsterOverserr one of the main reasons Im still with Plex
Overseer works with the others too! Im doing a video today I think on Overseer, Jellyseer and Ombi
DarkSideAvatarI have the lifetime license for plex but I still switched to jellyfin, because I had multiple instances where the plex login servers where down and I could not access my media ,with jellyfin you have local users and also have the possibility of oauth via a plugin
The login issue is a bit of a dealbreaker. I haven't had that issue yet but its been a problem for a lot of people, based on coments.
Wurstwasserjellyfin + Mediathekview + wireguard = ♥️
Wurstwasserbtw I stream to my PS3 from jellyfin with dlna
Ill take a look at dlna
DomiiBunnwait wait wait wait. what do you mean no GPU transcoding in jellyfin?
Oh, no Plex free doens't have GPU trasncoding, I hope I didnt slip up there!
DomiiBunnmight have been my own brain fart
zilvesta123Plex has trouble with a lot of sound codecs. Havent gotten any trouble with Jellyfin. And Jellyfin is lighter and therefore faster.
FitsouGRI use plex because for me is more user friendly UI in comparison with Jelly. Unfortunately their newest policy is a deal breaker. Not being able to stream outside of my network and the increase in payment got me thinking to completely remove it amend go with jelly.
EuJankaUse VPN to buy lifetime pass on Argentina or South Africa. I paid 4-5 times less for all features.
I didn't know that they had regional pricing, thats interesting.
EuJankaThey do. Fortunetly for people smart enough to use VPN.
.Sadly doesn’t work anymore
EuJankaJust tried on new account. It works.
.I’m seeing the same price, wth
EuJankaI used VPN to Argentina, Signed up with new Plex account. It showed price in USD. Entered virtual card information from Revolut, it changed to Argentinian pricing.
earflutterPaid plex has no features I need, free is enough
and for 99% of others its the same.
hojit84726Plex and emby blocked the ability for a lot of people to join a single server , jellyfin is the only one left
Yeah they have limits.
DML1111since you can start free with limited but free ootb multiuser aka limited concurrent app streams on emby there's absoluteley no need for plex at all if you wan't a comercially maintained one. the maintainance of jelyfin lacks again afer it last big 10.10 release. not a single update in 5 months and there's a bunch of anoying bugs not even small ones beeing patched on stable atm.
___XBMC wasn't an official Microsoft project, that's why they eventually rebranded
Yeah I got confused with Xbox media Center, so my bad on that.
Ezio comiWhy Plex Better then Kodi?
Just easier to use for many people
PotatoPlex is absolute garbage
⠀GschistiGschastibest on emby is: it is available everywhere, even on Tizen
Everywhere!
NerdPenguinopen source fanboys would rather waste 3 weeks of their life troubleshooting a random program they heard of 20 seconds ago, than actually pay a dev for their creation that they will likely use daily for years.
JeremyYeah legit, I got a Plex Pass lifetime for under $100 like 8 years ago and haven't had a single real issue since. Everything just works on all my devices. For like the price of one dinner out. I can only imagine how much time I'd invested over those years dicking around with something like Jellyfin and plug-ins. Look I'm a tech guy, but I prefer once I want to just sit down to watch a a movie, to not have to go update some plugin or monkey with some configs.
Plex is easy - Jellyfin is hard.
The more we learn the less effort we want to put into to stuff that can be a single click...
random tech tipsPlex doesn't work and has ads in the app, jellyfin everything is perfect
NerdPenguinPlex works out of the box and has no Ads if you pay for it.
random tech tipsjellyfin too idk what are you saying
EspákUnless it starts breaking. Then you have no way to fix issues. Download sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. Subtitles appear and disappear on the android version depending on the network I'm using. Sometimes all I see is a spinner for 1-2 minutes. Bad experience. Way bad for something I paid for.
bennyphitsare said devs creating from scratch or riding on the backs on open source? eg I refuse to pay for RD as its curating, not creating.
What? I threw jellyfin into docker compose, gave it a config, movie and series folder, started it up, put sole movies in and it worked.
Adrii EastOk, not sure what you are referring to because jellyfin was easier to setup. Also plex hates secure network setups when trying to connect to the server.
WarSaying jellyfin is hard is CRAZY
vonobaI bought plexpass the first month it came out. I like Plex. now they are selling my data. I want to like them but they have gotten worse
OmnibarThey don’t have ads, they have recommended content that is free and has ads.
Jeff JohnsonI’ve never seen an ad in my Plex ever and I’ve been using it for I think more than 15 years
random tech tipsthere, they mix in their own ad supported content, no one wants that
random tech tipsyes no one wants that, that's why I selfhost
Jeff JohnsonI’ve never seen an ad on my Plex server ever
OmnibarPlex is self hosted. - And you can turn recommended content off in settings.
OmnibarNow try and give server access to your parents and tell me about how easy it was
I just give them a login and the url?? Or do you expect me to give them administrator rights and let them manage it???
BarkBarklingtonor people who care about their privacy 🔏😉
Cremekeyword.. PAY for it. Alot of features that you have to pay for now were FREE BEFORE.
Dione Bigodeyou must be an apple user
NerdPenguinAndroid for the last decade, actually.
KaiI used Plex for months, and then they kept upping the price so I swapped to jellyfin and am super happy with the swap. Yes Plex had some great features but jellyfin is not far off and serves my purpose
Yeah after you get set up with JF, its really capable.
niimbssJellyfin just out of principles, but plex looks cool too
🥸Jellyfin with all the rr plugins and qBittorrent hooked in is perfect for me
T0kenerYou can add: plex is working. Jellyfin not. I installed it 1,5 years ago and some weeks ago. It’s still not able to discover all my 4,3 k movies. Always sticks at 1k then find 5 more. Research, 5 more, search, 5 more usw usw. It’s just shi
GGiuliano93Skill issue
T0kenerThat’s what all open source hero’s tell. I’m a software dev at aws for more than 8 years developing solutions used by millions - still jellyfin is poorly developed. And sure I could contribute, but if I would want to rebuild the whole internet, I wouldn’t start with jellyfin. Are you developing your phone OS?
GGiuliano93Ok champ 😂
Ancor Fariñagpu transcoding... i think its time to try jellyfin
Emil LaurilaKodi on linux or librelec on inexpensive hardware is all I need.
Ben SomnerI gave up on Jellyfin as I’ve lost countless hours trying to get it to play nicely with Apple TV and just can’t get it to play in sync with a HomePod. So I had to go back to Plex.
Plex support is a big reason to use it.
MorryPlex is better then jelly I’ve had both Plex runs better and faster on my hardware and the tagging works better and faster that’s all I need
Aristeidis KoliopoulFor me with kids, I really like Jellyfin, but does have an app on TV, PS5 and and iPhone / iPad.
Does or Doesn't?
Ben PotterI tried jelly fin but could not get it to access my 2 nas boxes? But Plex picked them up straight away. Any suggestions?
FoxyAurora🇬🇧Thats a Question with little info to go on. What is your Jellyfin server installed on. Windows. Linux. In Docker etc. Are you trying to access over network. Is it installed on one of the NAS. etc etc.
Yeah, what is the operating system? If its a docker based one, have you mounted/mapped the drives? that can be a sticking point
Ben PotterApologies. Installed on windows 11. 2 nas drives are amped as P: and q: drives in windows. If I open jelly fin and select add it does not show them just my C: which is the is drive. Also tried inouting the ip addresses in e.g 192.168.0.200 but still nothing. One nas drives are amped is a western digital and the other a Zyxel.
FoxyAurora🇬🇧If you are on Windows. Have you Enabled SMB on the nas. Then type \\Yournasname or \\yournasip in to a file explorer bar. Log in to your nas with your account details when prompted. Then right click on the folder that has your media and map as network drive. If you have done that you should be able to navigate there in jellyfin. Infact just for you I installed a quick Windows jellyfin server and tested. it shows my nas folders for me.
Ben PotterThanks. Yes smb is enabled. I dont have account name and passwords on my media nas so it can be accessed as anonymous. I think I have already done the right lock and map network as I have them set as P: and Q: drives in explorer. Will have another try. Cheers
Nueve658Jellyfin is a resource hog for anyone running on nas or Synology. Have Kodi for internal streaming and emby for external, it's much lighter and free tier still works on smart TVs.
thats a solid stack
Static Hour 📡I am paying Plex for years now and they recently increased the price so I looked at jellyfin. i have noticed that it kept walking through my entire harddrive for no reason throughout the day. that was very loud and annoying (HDD), while my Plex server only spun up my disk when it was being used or when it detected new files.. don't know if we can deactivate that crawler, but by default it means it taxes your hardware more
FoxyAurora🇬🇧Depends what you installed it on. Bare metal windows i found my drive would spin up a bunch. If it's newly set up and you set it to create trickplay images or chapters that can be time consuming and use the drive alot untill done. Jellyfin has Sceduled tasks that happen regularly by default. Each time it runs a task it will access drives. But you can change the task times frequency or disable them and manually run them when you want. Set up in Docker on my nas my nas never seems to wake up randomly.
I haven't had the same issue, but ill keep an eye on it.
Nimbus_Noxjellyfin unfortunately doesn't have 2fa out of the box :/ Sticking with Plex until it does. I'm after a set up and forget environment.
Thats the ease of Plex at the end of the day.
365nmPlex runs PERFECT at home… If want to watch remote, I connect to my home with my VPN. Plex also comes a default on my LG OLED TV.
Plex is bundled with almost everything these days!
Shahnoor HossainYeah but jellyfin doesn’t have an Apple TV app - dealbreaker.
I think if JF was on more services it would seriously outcompete plex.
appleuser66226740Infuse is an Apple TV app that can connect to plex, jellyfin, and Emby. It has better codec support than the native plex or Emby apps.
That’s what I use. At $12 a year it’s fantastic.
hg24952jhit does
Shahnoor HossainKinda defeats the purpose of open source and free. Mind you, I tried infuse - but tbh - wasn’t impressed. Plex UI was better.
Shahnoor HossainThanks. I’m testing it now. Can’t pull subtitles though.
StatAvgThere is jellyfin apps for Apple TV….
BaneTheres a swiftfin app for apple tv same devs
hey_it's_Dougi spent a week setting up jellyfin, sonarr etc, vpn to bypass the uk blogging torrents etc... all for me to realise my ps5 couldn't get jellyfin.... I'm new to Linux and this killed all my hard work
Thats such a pin BUT, if you use plex (free) all the sonarr and media server stuff will still work.
hey_it's_Dougthat's this weekends plans
M MI paid for Plex during Black Friday like a decade ago for £30-60 I think. If I was starting today I would likely go jellyfin.
Early adoper!
bequin42Xbmc. Goated!
Well and truly!
JudasI have both plex and jellyfin I like both but jellyfin has died twice on me requiring starting over.plex has been rock solid.if you first words were ssh chose jellyfin. Otherwise stick with plex
On this we agree.
Kodakit look like JellyFin is made in 'Microsoft FrontPage' the user interface is extremely poor.
GordonGesslerIt has theming support. you can just install a theme to make it look more modern
FoxyAurora🇬🇧There are Quite a few comunity themes you can install for Jellyfin and while not for the beginner. You can Fully customise the Jellyfin UI with custom CSS Code.
From what I can tell Infuse is apple only?
I saw a very neat Netflix mod for JF, I do like the customisability of it.
Modding is fun!
FoxyAurora🇬🇧I cheated. I found the default themes in the install folder. Copied the CSS code from one. Gave it to Grok AI, told Grok what I wanted and Grok customised the CSS for me 😅🤣
Adam Hale (Devilion)I’m running both as I have friends that paid for plex.
IceThunder90I only use plex as I have a personal music libary and its the only sever host that can allow me to listen to my music across devices like my phone, tv and Alexa devices
I would love it if they included raido into the app as well, that would be awesome.
bennyphitsyou sure they can't? kodi has and plex is a fork right?
Aute.chPlex lifetime, if i would have no money yes jelly is nice but plex is just set it and forgrt it. And GPU transcode was so essy with intel arc
bobheh I thought emby and by extension jellyfin was an XBMC fork, turns out I had it confused with EmbER.
BobHDR works on plex and not on jellyfin. I ran both hoping to switch over from plex to jellyfin, but hdr never worked and subtitles was 50/50. On plex, everything just works.
walohmaHDR works fine on Jellyfin for me? But yeah subtitles are kinda wonky at times
BobI’ve never gotten HDR to work on either googletv or Apple TV, so I just gave up. Also, the auto skip intro and outro never worked on jellyfin either, but always on plex.
walohmaSounds like a client issue honestly. Some players won't support the intro plugin. What device were you watching on?
ChickenDipps | Lily ☭you need to make sure your subtitles settings is set to burn in always
FoxyAurora🇬🇧HDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision all work fine for me in Jellyfin
FoxyAurora🇬🇧You need to install the Intro skipper plugin for Jellyfin. Then let it scan your media. But you need to make sure you are on the latest version of Jellyfin or it wont show up in the repo. For example if you had a Ugreen NAS and used the Jellyfin one click installer the Jellyfin app will be a few versions behind. If you manually install it in Docker you can pull the latest version and its super easy to set up. Looks scary but its actualy just a few clicks.
BobApple TV 4K 2gen and 3gen and a googletv.
BobIt was set to burn in always🤦♂️
sebbejohanssonI had no idea plex was a kodi fork.
Atlasi love jellyfin, but the android tv apps still struggles... powering through
With patience comes reward!
film.lucasBest way to use is jellyfin and kodi together
Toasterplex free + tailscale, it's perfect for me
William Comartin 🇨🇦plex sharing is way easier users don't need to know the URL or IP to your server. imagine trying to share your media with your grandma.
Yeah, I tried to help my Mum, but it was a bust.
Marc Salxbmc on the xbox... I'm feeling old 😂
.... We've come so far!
Kabamaru Iganostremio 🗿🏴☠️
Yeah, if you don't care about storing , an donly want to watch its a great option, till they get taken down.
MattMoved from Plex as it always wanted to call home and is a requirement
And yeah, not being able to log in without an internet connection is also a pain.
PowerFlower 🇩🇰Paid for lifetime plex long time ago, so sticking with that for now. But I am keeping an eye on jelly as that has a few nice features I like and miss. Maybe in the future, or maybe I'll just run both
Its what a lot of people seem to be doing
Goofie3 😃 👤Love EMBY
Emby is great!
freezerrKso u want to get away from paid streaming but are paying for plex...😐 jellyfin is just better
Netflix, Prime, Disney, Hulu and so on.. they add up to a lot more than plex. I think its worth it.
freezerrKbut they have many more movies, series and if im hosting than it should be free 😅 except for the bought movies over the years
OLDHAMMER'95PleX is great.
Truth
Timoplex is very easy to set up and polished, the two issues is that olex is a paid service, and also that they have proven that they will kick you out if you dont pay, and will randomly change the app when they feel like it, nothing you can do. as for jellyfin its hard to set up, and untill you do it feels laggy and unpolished, to get a decent jellyfinnwxperience you need add ons, meta data and trickplay extraction, and you need to set up server access for outside your home, and what makes this hard is that if anything goes wrong, its your fault and liability
Their free version is fine, I haven't heard of anyone getting banned from the service becasue they didn't pay.
Timomine stopped working randomly after they updated the app, meanwhile they started trying to get me to accept their new agreements which says they can share your ip with internet providers etc. furthermore i paid for the app once, they removed the functionality i paid for, that was my last straw
mikaeltorngrenFree vs expensive.
T0kenerWorking vs not working
6.99 a month is't that expensive I think, but everyone has different versions of expsnisive, but this is just my experience.
OmnibarLifetime membership is worth it if you’re going to use the software long term
Jeff JohnsonI paid $50 15 years ago that averages out to $.28 a month
Tylko przewijamIs there a good jellyfin-based audiobook player for iPhone?
Foolson91An app called plappa. Works both with Jellyfin and AudioBookshelf.
ptastyBookPlayer also supports Jellyfin and its free.
eisregnerwell Plex disabled access to MY media since it was hosted on Hetzner. so from a privacy perspective it's clearly Jellyfin for me.
No Sympathy For Neurotypicalsi use jellyfin because it meets my needs and doesn't phone home to any companies
The perfect use case.
Smokey the BearWhat do you mean?
No Sympathy For Neurotypicalsjellyfin doesn't collect and save usage data on what you watch because there is no company behind it
Ducho ChanevSpot on. I spent literally two decades using and tweaking each and every one of them. Now in my 40s, no time for s***, bought a Plex Lifetime Pass with a seasonal discount - my soul, nerves and senses rest in peace now.. 😁😁
As we get older, priorities and capacity to deal with frustrations certainly change.
WouterThis is the best argument I've seen so far.
nextgenai_frbad choice
alxsame here, paid around 90 euro around 2 years ago for full lifetime. 0 regrets
Joe DiragiI still run into 4K files that refuse to stream in plex client on my Apple TV. Infuse better
SoulifiedI run into that same issue with 4K DV content and use Infuse as a backup player. I really wish they fix my only issue with Plex.
Ducho ChanevSorry for your experience. We have nothing Apple at our home, so can't tell. My Plex on both Tizen (Samsung) and Google TV plays 4k Dolby Vision Dolby Atmos just perfect.
ุPlex is a corporate trash
OlmateNightfoxI've had all of them. I prefer Plex
_kalidaniPlex is paid and Jellyfin is free and open source. End of the question, Jellyfin wins.
user9051287616860to use hardware transcoding you have to pay but you can transcode for free. but if you have to transcode your media you are doing something wrong
_kalidaniim doing nothing wrong, my server is for all short of devices and to all my friends, so it needs transcoding. With Plex Free and hardware acceleration (cpu only) it was max 1 user at 480p. Now I transcode with the GPU to 10 users in 1080p at the same time with Jellyfin.
MaizeSharkwhat GPU do you use?
_kalidaniquadro p2200
AlexNo you don't 🙄
T0kenerUnfortunately not. Plex works. Heldin doesn’t
_kalidaniMy Jellyfin server with 3 months uptime is working perfectly. User error.
EuJankaYou can not use Jellyfin on many devices. I paid for Plex lifetime subscription 35 Euros. Daily about 12 devices use it. Not all of them can use Jellyfin...
_kalidaniI use Jellyfin on Apple TV, Android, iPhone, iPadOS, Windows, Mac, Linux… which device is not compatible with Jellyfin?
EuJankaMost tvs
JeremyYeah but a lifetime is pretty cheap and then you know there's actual paid devs behind everything. Things won't just break or die off.
_kalidaniWhich tvs? all of my tvs (android tv and apple tv) works.
Modnar !Amen
EuJankaApple does not have tv, it only has tv box. LG tv does not have Jellyfin, Samsung tv, Hisense does not have it.
jyou can still stream to them using your phone, and Samsung has an app, you just have to install it manually I think
EuJankaStream using phone, and can use your phone same time. And for simple user to gain Samsung developer account, then sideload and install widget type app is too comolicated. That is why in my eyes it is not working on Samsung.
jjust use Google cast? Samsung supports it for sure because I already used it some time ago, but idk about the native app, just read that it's possible. also if you are able to setup jellyfin you should be able to sideload an app
EuJankaSure. And when my wife wants to change movie and I am driving to shops? Plex is easy to setup and use app. Jellyfin is great, but it is extra work and is not as polished. My LG tv does not have app, Hisense one does not. On Samsung it is extra work. Jellyfin is not as user friendly. Period.
jLG has a native app in the store btw, I use it
Bower 🇦🇺I have an LG c1 with jellyfin 🤔
EuJankaWhen I was looking for it was not on store. Same C1.
Chris PinkIf you want to use files for all of the different apps/platforms you use a proper standard for your video files like container, encoder, bit, audio and you won't need your users to transcode. That's what I do. Easy peasy. 😊
_kalidaniapple tv it’s the name of the tv box…
_kalidaniNow you can’t even do remote access without paying, so it’s out of the question for me.
T0kenerIt’s not y mor on. If you install it plain and it can not find all of the 4000 movies, it’s obv a core function not working 🙄
_kalidaniwhat?
EuJankaYou can. Buy lifetime pass and done deal. I paid 35 Euros for mine.
_kalidaniNow it costs 229,99€. Jellyfin costs 0€ and doesn’t rely on an external log in system.
EuJankaIt costs 68 Euros. But Jellyfin is inferior app, so I did not mind to pay for lifetime.
_kalidaniWhere it costs 68€?
EuJankaUse VPN, buy it in Argentina.
london 🇱🇰 🐅I got Jellyfin on my tizen os Samsung tv
EuJankaIt is possible, but it is not as easy expierence as Plex. My question is - does it auto updates?? Because on the few Samsungs I did put Jellyfin, updates did not happen.
london 🇱🇰 🐅I’ll give you that, cuz it doesn’t auto update or is easy to install but updating once every 1-2 month with a computer compared to paying 7£ a month for a self hosted service is a better choice for me
EuJankaMy problem with that is that people using my server for movies are halfway across the country. So I do not have simple ability to get there and update or install it on new if they get one. Plex for me makes so much more sense.
london 🇱🇰 🐅I get that and I really wanted to use plex for the remote access without something like Tailscale, cloudflare tunnels or nginx but I don’t like paying for something that I have to run and manage myself per month. If it was like 30-40£ for lifetime, i would’ve switched a long time ago
EuJankaI paid 35 Euros. Used VPN, payed like in Argentina.
london 🇱🇰 🐅With a normal European card?
EuJankaRevolut card, with ARS as currency.
london 🇱🇰 🐅Ahhh I probably stick with jellyfin cuz i had it for 3 years but that would’ve been good to know when I set up my server 😭
EuJankaDude, Jellyfin is great. My only objection is about claims where someone claims it is greatly better than Plex. Both have pros and cons. Use what fits your needs. But yeah, that was a steal for Plex lifetime pass.
london 🇱🇰 🐅Yeah both is a good as each other. The only real difference is the plex pass
David 57u may need to check again. lg, samsung, and hisence all have it.
joostinonlineIf you have a moderately modern CPU then you don't need GPU transcoding. I've used Plex for years and never once needed to pay.
benisorjellyfin is crap tho. try streaming to a Chromecast. it doesn't work. it's been a known issue for years they can't fix it
JoseYou don't need transcoding if you just keep everything at h264, port forward and direct play just works.
_kalidaniNow you can’t even do remote access, so…
OmnibarI’m willing to pay for software that functions well.
Levi LippincottThat’s the end of the question for people who are comfortable with being able to do all the configuration things he covered. A lot who are not as technically savvy will feel comfortable doing that, even with the rise of AI that could help them.
EuJankaLG yes, Hisense depends on region and Samsung does not have Jellyfin in store. Sideload is needed for Samsung.
Modern TechJellyfin is poop tho
OmnibarYou realize not every video needs transcoded?
Project Blue Bookplex is 100% free. the plex pass is not necessary whatsoever
WillowNonLG is a super popular TV brand and it supports it, you can just download the app from their "app store".
Another Funny GuyCould you explain how you use jellyfish on apple tv?
_kalidanidownload swiftfin from app store
MikeI love me my jellyfin
JointedJointedYou can do remote access with Plex. You can just port forward port 32400 or you can use a ssh tunnel.
Issue is if your ISP has yiu behind CGNAT, then port forwarding isn't super easy to do
JointedJointedYou could always request a real public IP from the ISP, but they'll probably charge you a lot more. or use a VPN that gives you a static IP. I pay for a seedbox shared server, which works well for my setup with a private tracker.
SteveCorbettPlex is free to use bro
_kalidaniSo, if the first thing they say is good about Plex is that it’s easy to install and configure, now needing to do openvpn or wireguard why not just use Jellyfin?
_kalidaniAnd why do all of that when you can just install Jellyfin?
I don't want to pay $80 a month for multiple streaming services.
_kalidaniYes. I’m doing all of this to have a streaming service.
mattyhow have i been using plex for free for the past 15 years 😳
Because it's free, unless you want certain features
_kalidaniIt doesn’t charge you a lot more. 1€ extra for me. Digi Spain
Nice.
JointedJointedYeah, I'd imagine in Spain it's cheaper. The U.S. ISPs are big jerks. My setup is pretty cheap, $11. I share it with my family too.
_kalidaniyeah in spain we have 10gb internet speed for 25€/month (in reality it’s more or less 8500mb/s)
JointedJointedIncredible. I pay $60 for 1gig (~800mbps actual) 😓
Ouch.
Impressive.
UjubasajubaGreat video!
sett.eealso Plex on Apple TV is fire
It is!
sett.eeI get them to share the same folder and set up separate logins for different stuff
Nice idea, best of both worlds
sweet_sarrasinI just love Jellyfin so much bro
Guerrilla GorillaFOSS ❤️
MatJellyfin feels soo laggy. Uninstalled it after 10mins
mikaeltorngrenWhat device was it run on? I’m surprised it was lagging.
I use lfs btwwasn't laggy for me
Sedat 🍉Bro probably ran it on raspberry pi 2 or something
︎KOFibltoI have also set mine up the last weeks, the main problem im having is that there is no combined watching+downloading possibility. Now on plex/jellyfin (i have both) i can watch and on jellyseerr (fork of overseerr) i can add. Is there any way to get my watchlist from plex automatically downloaded? And then also sometimes movies only have like a 4k version to download from radarr, but i normally watch 720p or 1080p so its a complete waste of storage, bitrate, processing power etc. Is there any way of like downscaling it to 720p automatically after download? Cool videos btw, helped me alot🙏🏻
Yes I belive you can automate watch list to trigger downloads in sonar/radarr. Set a profile at 1080pmax,and use prowlarr to add more sources for files.
C SNow a video showing your experience with Jellyfin setup and configuration would be something I’d love to see.
Planned!
C SExcellent. Thanks.
Bryan FisherLibreElec and Kodi works well on my Pi
Nice to know!
Bryan FisherI’m sure you have spoken about this before, but the solutions that are talking about do seem to be far more complicated to set up than a simple libreelec/Kodi setup. I’ve heard of plex before but never really used it. Never heard of jellyfin
Benoit Plourdekodi run on webos with jellyfin plugins its perfect
Benoit Plourdesurprisingly it run really great on all my lg tv in 4k hdr
Crytical 🇨🇦Prologue (Audiobook app that uses Plex) is what keeps me in Plex. It’s sooo good for managing and listening to your audiobook library.
Oshiftill have to check that. ive just been using plexamp 🤔
Crytical 🇨🇦It’s so good. I paid for the upgrade to allow downloaded files, but really I just wanted to give them the money to say thanks for creating a great app. The free version works perfectly.
Oshifti tried to check it out. its only available on apple sadly so ill have to stick to plexamp
DazzKodi was so so good, until it wasn't. There was a time everything streamed seamlessly on Kodi. I don't even have it anymore. Jellyfin might be worth trying.
It's great if you want to tinker.
bennyphitsstill going strong after a decade+
TobyPlex also has a more supported app
KeithAlso from Microsoft? XBMC has nothing to do with Microsoft...
Oh, my bad, Xbox media centre, an assumption on that.
AddinnIt used to be the main by hacked xbox os/gui.
PigJohnyou can have remote access 🤭
Meh 🫤I think plex at the moment is a stupid for there pricing model for when sharing with family and friend. Jellyfin is free to use!!
Meh 🫤I’ve dropped you a dm
Haschamaladunno paid 50 for lifetime
bird_noticerI had a modded og Xbox with XBMC, absolutely brilliant at the time. boxee was also a fork of XBMC.
Oh yeah, boxee was awesome.
ColinI use both, personally jellyfin just isn’t quite there for me, Plex just has so much more polish and user experience
Yeah, the difference between a commercial and a community service.
ColinBeen a lifetime pass holder for a good few years now, I have no plans to switch but I keep jellyfin running as a backup
Yeah, I missed the lifetime sub, before it went up, so stuck on monthly, honestly I. OK with it.
ColinThere will be a discount at some point, think i paid about £80 for it
Nice.
RazzomissileI agree, Jellyfin is making big steps, ofc, but it's always lacking. I believe there's a bug with subtitles since years, for example.
ColinYeah I’m sure it will get there with time
womp_womp_womp_wooOooOmpLove your content mate
