If you're downloading media for your home server, it's wise to be checking it for viruses before you start messing with it. This is a guide on how you can use #ClamAV to screen files that are downloaded with #Transmission into your #unraid server. This method will work for most services but process will change of course.

n8danielsAre you using a VPN?
sometimes. I use newshosting and that comes with a vpn free.
natronbro just say you don’t use private invite only torrent sites
ok "I don't only use private sites"
windboyxThis is like putting on a condom to go play basketball
you don't play basketball like I do then!
ArthurI am going to be real with you. Been “downloading” since the 90s. the number of real virus I have run into is 0. I get it. You want to be safe but this is basically pointless.
same, but 10 min or work, just to be sure is the same as paying your insurance.. you don't regret it till you do
ArthurI know I’m wrong. It goes against everything cyber security says. But the only thing I regret is all the money I gave to Norton and mcafee all those years. Today VPNs are sort of the modern day equivalent. No one’s going track you down for “downloading”. You might get any email from your ISP. Just delete it and keep going. Just another money grab based on fear.
༽ 🪳Happy to have finally found #TorrentTok
welcome :)
FutureTheIf you’re using a Linux system and have your folder ownership and permissions set correctly you don’t need antivirus..
aida☄☿clamAV is weak
user30289790483This makes no sense for my use case, I only download video files
GregLove clamAV, but unfortunately clamav is not as capacidade as comecial options, and comecial options are not as versatile as clamav.
zilvesta123Dont use Torrents. Only use Usenet. Only use indexers with scene releases only.
bababUgzcan you share what scene releases mean
carbsaremyfriendsfind a good private tracker, then you won't have to worry as much, still scan tho
Llama__fartshow would we go about adding a layer of encryption so that ISPs don't flag you for totally not torrenting because torrenting is bad 👀
you could use a VPN or a seedbox. that would give some anonymity to people that were doing it, not that we are, it's bad.
GregI use a specific opnsense routher vm whit tor network for torrents.
yeah, I've plans to migrate to opnsense one day.
Gregyep. but exposes your ip.
GregI tried pfsense, but I'm more alined whit opnsense team vision. I use it professionally on my clients.
edwardCactuswhat's wrong with torrenting??? how else do you get all those Linux distros
ollMakes defently sense... Also needed for Usenet?
ApplesCrispyClam AV is awfully slow and pegs CPU at 100%. I need an alternative to run on unraid.
I haven't found this, but I'm definitely going to be keeping it on CPU usage now.
ApplesCrispyHas your experience been completely different I thought what I said was widely known 🫣
CliffI don't use an *arr. I use FlexGet and it's easy to select which file types are allowed or blocked. Also, I don't use Windows. 😂
asdfGODjklIf I manage to get a virus on FreeBSD, I deserve it
RichGet better indexers
Daniel L.I rip my files from Blu-rays only
occulticOwlI will be adding this to my stack as soon as I get my server up & running again 😅 I'm moving to Pangolin as my service to access my home server away & am having trouble deploying it
Davidskip torrents, use debrid
I can't believe how long it took me to discover debrid
good advice.
DrivingWhileI dub this “Jimmyhat” protocol?
Jimmyhat?
DrivingWhileOld term for a rubber, Trojan, etc
hahaha I see!

qwertymedia file types wont carry dangerous code, also but your Media Player (plex, jellyfin or whatever) on Linux and limit the permissions.. you will never need an antivirus with that setup
SalamihawkI wouldn’t be too sure about that. It’s all too common to attack common applications by forcing them to load seemingly innocuous data that ends up overflowing or underrunning a buffer here or there. Many code injections are done in formats that typically don’t execute.
qwertysure there are ways to implement it in pictures (so far) but the media servers cant run that code and will flag the file as corrupt codexs
Marian MUnless the malicious files are taking advantage of a vulnerability, expecting the server to index them or to preview them, and then the rest of the code executes.
MimsyMadwe've seen a lot of malicious files pretending to be media over the past year. it's very easy to misclick something that looks like a media file but isn't
Damn straight.
nnptyWhat @MimsyMad said. There’s a new attack where they hide malicious code in SRT which work with images
davebusters89So just block .srt files from being downloaded. And download the subtitles separately
nnptyDuh. We’re just saying that it exist
qwertyshow me a working exploit in these file formats that can be executed with jellyfin or Plex on Linux and i will pay you
johnrlmcnabbmake sure to use handbrake to optimize the file for the smallest size and the easiest amount of transcoding. future you and your storage limits will thank you.
Not a bad idea actually.
Aleran1141 🇨🇦This is best done at your arr app. Downloading is much cheaper than transcoding in absolute power costs terms. The people making the releases are also paying much better attention to ffmpeg settings etc, so you end up with better files on average leaving it to the experts as it were.
AnonymousThis. This is the way. Everything gets transcoded to H.265 or AV1 and then I’ll just transcode on the fly for any device that can’t play the file natively. Never see any complaints about video quality.
hey_it's_Dougme raw dawging my computer for 20+years
hey_it's_Dougdefinitely adding this additional step if I'm automating
Lol
Dr3am3scap3theres and option in qbittorrent to exclude certain file types, thats a good option as well
Nice
Dr3am3scap3sure but if you exclude file types that you'll never ever need that tends to lower your risk, obviously won't make it completely safe but still something is better than nothing right
Ton-Eto add to this, in additional settings on individual indexers in sonarr/radarr, there's a "fail downloads" opt for executables/potentially dangerous
AP😌in antivirus adding exception for torrent folder🤣 because i need that virus for that program🙂
Lol
Bort LeBortI feel like scrubbing everything through FFMPEG to convert into clean original audio/video only would go a long way to drop any unexpected payloads.
Not a bad idea
KibbieKattThe nice thing about sonarr/radarr is that they just don't import files that aren't valid media files. So exes, .scr, .lnk, all just get deleted. There's an *arr app to automate it. It's equivalent to treating anything that's not a video file as a virus, which seems like a stricter policy than allowing some EXEs if they pass the scan.
Jonathan MarkovskiCould you link me the reference link for this?
In my biolink clikkable.me I have projects on there with the snippets and steps. Add your email and I'll send it to you. No cost no signup no enrolment onto a shitty newsletter.
KibbieKattFor sonarr / radarr I don't think there's any specific documentation because it's not a feature per se, it's just that it lacks the ability to handle anything besides media files. There's documentation obviously that it imports mp4,mkv,avi,etc, so anything not in the list (exe, lnk, etc) is ignored, and that list would be theoretically huge because it's basically anything besides the supported list. For the specific app that automates the cleanup of what sonarr/radarr is ignoring, it's at this GitHub repo: https://github.com/GrdLock/sonarr-extension-filter
NadoxI did not know the ARR stack did that. Truly a goated piece(s) is software.
luna 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🇦🇺😂 this isn’t needed at all.
jon_ob2You definitely do
luna 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🇦🇺it’s really not.
Potatosaying this mean nothing.... next time explain yourself
luna 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🇦🇺awww does someone need a teacher because they can’t understand basic english? 😂😂😂😂
userunknownlol aren't you something. English is not my mother language but maybe you are capable enough to explain to me in understandable easy terms why you base your stance on not needing this.
luna 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🇦🇺the irony of the only people saying shit like that is no name accounts. go away bot. 😂
kennethdunne27why not? so many virus hiding in dogy torrent downloads
Johann Hawleythis is linux, not windows.
luna 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🇦🇺you don’t say. 🙃
Andrew HarlessI'd love to see this for qBitTorrent
I'll see if I can get you something
Andrew HarlessThat would be amazing. Thank you for that and all the great content!
I'm happy to make it and glad you like it!
Actually, it won't matter, if you have the clamav and the folders Setup, then the downloader isn't going to matter.
Andrew Harlessso the only difference would be the variables in the qBitTorrent container?
Yeah, where the completed file goes, just update the folder location. Ooohhh hang on, no, we need to get it to run the script, sorry yeah I need to check that.
Andrew Harlessno worries! glad you caught it because I would still be hammering away trying to figure out what I did wrong lol
dan256512This is why I use Stremio with TorBox, streamed over vpn.
Smart.
Leftist_SevenCant download vid :(
Not sure I don't make them sundown loadable. If you look at my bio link, I have this instructions there as well.
SlushyPieYour teaching has exponentially increased, nice work!
Glad your liking it!
stuttervideonice video I'd be up for watching anything like this
Thanks! I try doing a new vid every day
UnabnormalDayWha you would do, if 😉 were doing this
This
asjed 🇵🇸This is incredible media. Thank you
Glad it can help
DaBeetusCan you configure ClamAV or a similar tool to filter specific file types and either quarantine or delete them? For instance, I’d like to allow only certain media file types like .flac, .mkv, and .mp4 to pass through to my completed folder, while excluding .txt and .info files.
I've not got too deep into it but I thi k yes.
Andrew Harlessyou can usually set this up in your torrent software. it simply won't download those files
Ur MomIf I were doing this, wouldn’t I be scanning all the directories regardless?
Can, this is just a workflow process style, scan them as them come in and it's done.
