I want to remove #Google Notes from my life, so I was looking around at other self hosted notes applications. I found #memos and it is so light and so quick to install this will run on a #RaspberryPi and it took me less than 5 minutes to build.

munthow to overcomplicate a simple task 2026
tomCan this be accessed / installed on android mobiles? Sorry noob here!
if you host it on you local network you can access it, if you use tunnels or a URL then yes you can do that too!
tomThank you!! My home server currently only has Plex and NextCloud on memos is my next project. Thanks again!!
Awesome
Muamer HajdarevićI am using joplin, works on ios, android, macos, Linux. Also webdav server is on raspberry pi zero w.
larum.me 🇩🇪🇪🇺You have created a typical nerd video that underdelivers on the app and its features.
Mit ~Notesnook team
cheOrg mode is all i need
Michael WheatlandTry Joplin. it doesn't even need a server for sync. (it can but doesn't need it). it can sync using nextcloud, git, Dropbox etc.
rduffyObsidian I vote for best second brain 🧠
Miguel AlvesUse Obsidian+Syncthing
thinkaboutitdocmost?
lucas-rauschIf you know markdown, check out hedgedoc
Jackylein250I hope they'll add offline support in the future. I don't want to be always online to do stuff.
simonsayschatNotepad
mrknever once did I ever use Google notes, let alone open it
alien8tiveOof, lost me at nano 😂
🎮•Trely•🪴 🇵🇸I’m really enjoying obsidian
babadook893There's also noter.md but it's still in development
andernfallslogseq+git
Oubaydos 🇲🇦 🇵🇸i ve been using affine for a couple of months now, and its amazing, a couple of bugs/missing features, but the package seems to be the best in the foss ecosystem
Enriquewhats everyone opinion on Notesnook?
Idrees HassanFor all those suggesting obsidian, do note that it isn’t open source if that’s important to you
glitchgardenOBSIDIAN
droopiewait it's not chow-n? I have been saying it wrong for 25 years
NeodexiumsterI highly suggest AnyType, been in development for years with the idea of capturing all kinds of custom and default shapes of information (tasks, notes, urls, meetings), all local, private, encrypted. And synces via LAN, and crossplatform. Genuinely surprised this software isn't mentioned more often, since its way more complete than all other apps (developers actually wanted you to use the app for EVERYTHING, hence the name 'Any'type)
LaFlameif you like minimal check out textarea.my no install required just a html file.
oh yeah, saw that the other day.
GaleI moved from Obsidian to Anytype
YourDailyVideosanytype
T.Smoke275looks nice but apt-get is obsolete for some time now and you forgot to mention the '-d' option in the docker compose call
SearingRennyGoogle notes? Does not exist.
Marlon MillerCall it Keep...
SearingRennyNo one uses keep. Not even the pm. I work for Google.
I do
either obsidian or anytype
affine is also a good option
BugajPCMRI'm looking for only local solution since I have VPN, I also want to utilize local LLM for RAG. Is there any tool that will let me connect notes to my local AI?
OpenSnakeHow about Siyuan ?
not really used it much, affine is a great option.
stephen.purkissCheck out https://theweave.social
Doom_Hamsterhmm looks nice but I am getting a little intimidated by the whole command line thingy. is there no way to do it through some kind of interface where you just create folders and/or click install?
yup, use a operating system like unraid (that's what i used when I started), or casaos, umbrell, or truenas. that gives you an I terface to click and install. but once you start with terminal, it gets very easy very fast :)
droopiestarted? what are you using now? I went with unraid instead of trunas like 6 years ago. unraid is pretty much a 1 click for docker. still need user for configs etc. super easy.
FAHADWhat's our problem with such obvious things? The “Joplin” program has been around for a long time and doesn't need alternatives.
bubmik23notion?
An alternative to notion that's free and your data isn't sent to someone else's server
bubmik23omg. my data so sensitive 🤣 "remind me to bye ...", "deploy project..." cmon bro
bubmik23did u host your private email server? 🤣
No, way too much woek
bubmik23not much as u install "notion"
Well, yes. Been doing so since 2001 😅
jspAppflowy ?

2BAnyone else using Joplin? Also has a clipping plug-in for chrome and a function to search your notes directly in your browser. Also for phones. Nice backup function as well.
Oh, I should take a look at that one.
Old-Bear-76Absolutely. Have used Onenote, DevonThink, obsidian and many more. In the end I took Joplin and started to use it with a personal storage cloud solution. Have migrated over 36gb of data and consolidated it into Joplin. at times a bit raw, but at least you can import export and are not locked in. even better: I sync between Linux, macOS, Windows, Android and iOS.
2BYes, as you say it's a bit raw but the freedom to self host and sync across all plattforms is absolutely worth it.
Vince VanhoyteObsidian and git lab
Gitlab is a good choice
MichaelYesterday i found AFFiNE. Really nice Notes / Notion alternative. U can host it urself and the nice thing is: its local first. Im just using the App and when im home it automatically sync to the self-hosted instance. No need for a tunnel or open ports!
Nice, I've been considering doing an affine set up, good push :)
MichaelWould love to hear the opinion of someone more experienced about Affine!
Bradderzwhat's your OBS setup? like what resolution is window capture and camera device capture? please and thank you
I have it in 4k which is 2304x4096. The I just resize the windows.
Bradderzthank you
Ashoka👌👍 sqlite
Lạnh Mưa😁😁😁
bobnapibadungthank you linux for making my complicated life like a breeze compare to your cli.
Sir StokvischJoplin 🔥
RaphZMemos is really cool to save random stuff, but it can become quite annoying to search for stuff when you save a lot of notes
Yeah, it seems a little lacking when you're at scale but the you can move to more robust options like Joplin or even affine.
RaphZI've been using Memos just in case I want to make a quick note, and later one I'm adding it to obsidian, which I've synced with my server using syncthing, and where I have all my notes/documents organized
Nice, that's a solid plan.
xencool
Slide_alloooongLooks nice. I currently use obsidian with ‘remotely save’ extension to sync all my devices through my pi5.
wojtek1150you can use private GH repo and create markdowns
True, it will be used to train AI though.
wojtek1150So 2 in 1 😂
muffinhydra8306instructions unclear, my pc turned into an RBMK nuclear reactor
OK?
Bear&Kat in CitiesObsidian + Github = no hosting needed
n0TechInteresting. Does that mean you use the GitHub app on your phone to access your notes?
NyquilNo, use the obsidian app
droopieor using github as the host provider?
bugsnteaInstead of using Google, let’s use Microsoft … if you don’t host, the data isn’t yours.
dreadgott0764Affine is very good (Notion clone, effectively one-liner install with Docker)
Antoinethank you. I will give this a try
Steward the Teachercan you share the commands with us
Yes, I have just added memos on a pi as a project on my link in bio tool. All the info is there for you :)
W erereIt seems there's lots of obsidian in yhe comments, I've tranfer to Anytype this year and working fine, but still want more obsidian's local storage and more functions like notion
Yeah obsidian is great but a pain for cross device management.
NessThank you for sharing!!!
hiAnytype
Nice find
smmarinJust saying that CasaOS/ZimaOS has Memos in its store, so is very simple to add 😁
TajAlasfiyaa Ishag🥰🥰🥰

lykirī@lykirī: can i just say how grateful i am for these videos, thank you so so so much for helping me and others!
😂😁
lykirīi mean it!!!
Thank you :)
lykirīno, thank YOUUUU
thesaxbygale 🇨🇦🥰🥰🥰
danielAffine works well and easy setup
I should do some videos on affine and obsidian
shagiTry Trilium Notes, self hosted
I'll take a look
MichaelIs docker really needed? I'm going to guess it's probably a simple lamp stack or something similar to run this
I do docker for ease
Modnar !0.000001% of people can do that
Abbot SkinnyReading the repeating obsidian comments and watching pluribus simultaneously is creepy.
Lol, obsidian is great, but a lot for a beginner
Abbot SkinnyOr use this prompt in any LLM: make me a local md editor with split view and sidebar for saves in localstorage. Add an export function as json for giggles.
Lol, I was considering making one for the wife but she has additional needs, but yeah, super easy to build.
Tom Sepewhat i’m liking about Obsidian is it is just md files. so i can open my notes directory in cursor AI and start doing some smart editing. then can view and sync the notes accesible on my phone etc. yes would like to make this self-hosted. but i’m ditching evernote and just starting this transition
_malachiportlockObsidian is another great one
anonorowas about to say same 😂
John Doenot if you want online sync
NdRWhy not? I have my vault on iClod drive, so it’s synced in all my devices
glitchgardenthere is OBSIDIAN Sync 😂
dominikYou can use the remotely sync plugin with e.g. a self-hosted webdav server
Doe Jones461There's an open source plugin to sync your vaults for free...a bit tricky to set up, but it works like a charm! 👍
_malachiportlockSooo... your not gonna give no names of some of them or at least just 1 👀👀
Doe Jones461https://github.com/vrtmrz/obsidian-livesync
stereotypicalcatti prefer joplin personally 😁
bean_66This video should be titled “How I over engineer simple things”
Oh, I thought this one was super simple
Caffeinated Code Daddon't forget the -d after up or you'll lock that cli
Yeah, totally vaguing on the commands in this one. Update but not upgrading... Bad Ben.
kiwi_feathersI use one note. can handwrite, type, take pics and is on all devices. for a solution like this, I'm thinking of how my entire family can use this with me rather than just me.
My wife asked me for a similar option too, so I have an idea.
AthionLegit opened a terminal to check and Ip address today and without thinking started to type “sudo apt… “
Lol
Awho even use a google notes?
Hopefully no one now
CosmicVibeThere is an importer for Google Keep for Obsidian. Maybe you can import them into obsidian and then use the plain text to import it into this
Capervan FanPersonal preference: Affine. Very easy docker compose setup. Can use local LLM
Yeah I think I should look at that one.
Rassoul 🇸🇳 🦥SQLite is ❤
Lol, not so great ui on it though 😂
Rassoul 🇸🇳 🦥lol! True. Btw, SQLite is a great db!
xjaridapt update; but never apt upgrade?
CosmicVibeYes? Why would you want to do an upgrade?
Asnee2000Are you serious? Update to update the repository list and upgrade to actually install them
CosmicVibeThat's not what the upgrade command does 🙄 apt upgrade installs new versions of already existing packages on your system. That's not what you want in this case. You just added another repository and want to install that specific package. So you do an update followed by an apt install - nothing else
Asnee2000Not that’s not it, apt update merely update the metadata (catalogue refresh), you need apt upgrade to install them.
CosmicVibeThat's literally what I just said. Maybe try reading
Yes you're 100% right I either edited it out or just forgot, but yes update to get the updates to the packages and the upgrade to install them
Michael ScottI'm all for self-hosting everything but obsidian with the git plugin for free simple sync does the job nicely
Yeah, obsidian is OP but, overkill for just a notes app.
Grant Derridge@BenjaminSPowell wow where have you been!? I remember you from back in the Adsoup days! Great channel you have going here. Right in my lane.
Wow that's a long time ago! I've been around :)
UMNZ 🇳🇿Be mindful of putting content in your videos at the top 1/4 of the screen. Almost everything in this video you were typing was impossible to see on an iPhone with a Dynamic Island.
Fruit Stealersounds like skill issue
Got it, I did start adding spaces but, ill do something more :)
Spam@444No mobile app though
Mobile responsive?
BackgroundLogicWow that's clean. My solution for notes has been Obsidian + Syncthing on each device
BackgroundLogicNext project would be setting up syncthing on my nas to act as backup and constant online hub
Obsidian is great and far more powerful, but this is just so clean.
chairman meowI had some issues with syncthing and obsidian creating conflict files, if you encounter the same I recommend checking out self-hosted livesync
Thanks for the tip
Asnee2000Just use Notion, it’s great and free
Caffeinated Code Dadobsidian's achelles heel is its dependence on the file system. naming schemes are difficult
It's too much though, for a simple notes app, overkill.
StarAnyType might be a open source alternative here, similar capabilities to obsidian but open source and self hostable with multiple device support including mobile.
j0hn.rees3Another option but is not self hosted: Obsidian. You just save the files in a place that is synced to your own server somehow. available for phones too
Yeah I use obsidian a lot for the day job.
LiatachI love obsidian but I came to the comments just for this because I've twice now failed to successfully get obsidian to sync with Android over Proton drive if you've been successful please let us know how
LeroyJenkinsssssI tried so many options I ended up landing on Dropbox 😂
Ewww, but understandable
fab0iI use SyncThing to sync all of my Obsidian notes across all devices. I highly recommend it!
A lot of extra work but worth it.
I do that too. Works perfect. You don't even need a dedicated server for it
VainSoftGamesI use it and have my vault on iCloud, free sync ability 😁
John Bonksyncing my files through git. But I just have a spare computer serving as a server with gitea installed on it
Yilmasmy biggest grievance with obsidian is the lack of self host, and the publish not having any password gates.
You can self host, but sync won't work and yeah, there is no password management at all. Really annoying.
Yilmasdefine self host
You download and run the code on your own servers you manage, not paying a subscription to use.
Yilmasin that case, obsidian isn't legally self-host capable. you can run it in a docker, and most of the UI gets quite wonky. but its against their eula. you cant natively publish to your own server.
XoàiYou guys can deploy a VNC then using obsidian on that!
DvidPiI personally use git. It's about 2 minutes of setup, assuming you already have a GitHub account (or host your own git server 😃). One con is you have to manually tell it to push your changes. Else, they will stay on your device.
ShrikeI just pay for obsidian sync and it works, worth the money
tikchbila tiwliwlathere are also ways to self host it!
