It’s all well and good if you’re running a homelab to cut subscriptions out of your life — but if you want to take the next step, learning how to vibe code is where it starts. When you can build tools that fit perfectly into your workflow, exactly how you need them, everything changes. And with how fast AI is now, you can do it in a day. It doesn’t matter if the code isn’t pretty or secure. If it works inside your private network and does the job, that’s enough. People have said doing videos on the Red app is a good idea — and I agree — but I wanted multiple cameras and a proper workflow so I could actually make good stuff. Of course, nothing existed that did what I wanted. So I built it. And it made me realise: everyone needs to build something. Today, I’m ranting about building stuff.

JohnTrue. I made code this way, for tradingview futures. something that wasnt out there. funny part is. the dev team rejected it. because they didnt understand the use. but I do. 😂
3D Printing Nerd - JoelI am so, so happy I found you! Love this!
IsaaKawesome
Derek Key MusicI use Shinobi 😁
CRITTERyep please do then ... if you can do also text documents I will love you for ever
Cool idea.
The Wet. BanditPlease do a Plex server on a Pi on YouTube. I bought one after I saw your TikTok, and now I’m stuck lol
I have a media center Nas build coming up, ill cover this then :)
The Wet. BanditGreat!!!! Thank you keep up the great work you’re killing it!!!!
Motivationerdi vibe coded 3 simple scripts that all automate the sorting, formatting and notifications handling for my debrid content I want to stream because the tools out there are either limited or don't do the job right for debrids. learning to code or vibe is an extremely useful skill
It really is! 100% agree.
occulticOwl😁
BTFGToxxixif you post it on your github plz let me know!
I will do, probably a day or so.
Nicholas MatthewLove your content! As someone getting into homelabbing you are so awesome to watch
Thanks! Glad you like it, Ill keep going then!
AthionI have a couple of friends that legit code. Like, write it themselves… and I have WAY more apps built for myself than them. Because to them, coding is work. It’s not worth 2 hours of labor to save 5 minutes. But for me, it takes a lot less time and it’s fun and easy (mind you, I’m not talking enterprise grade software. Im talking about a password generator, a metadata stripper (and adder), a VERY fast file renamer/mover, a text format changer… I even have a (still in progress) Prompt in a box app, for image prompts. You can take any image and drop it on, a local vision AI reads it and then sends it to another local LLM, a writer AI,which writes the prompt. It has a random prompt feature that the writer AI will then expand, you can add phrases to the database (which is persistent) … it’s almost done now, and it’s about 1500 lines of code.
Chefs don't cook for themselves, Mechanics drive the worst cars and Coders don't build their own tools! Keep it up!
Sammy GoodmanMore about perfectionism than them seeing it as work tbh.
AthionI’m sure there’s an element of that… but both agreed it was too much work for the end result :)
Sammy Goodmanyh, but the core reason why it’s too much work for an end result is due to their own inability to allow something that isn’t perfect to be utilized. They inherently see 101 ways to make it better, design it cooler, or have it more efficiently ran, and therefore it truly is “more” work for them lol. Think of it as giving a toddler the toy with the various shapes, and showing them how to open the top and put them in. The older the toddler, the more time they’ll spend actually putting the shapes in the correct holes, and they get their enjoyment from the work required, the movement and brain activity utilized, etc. meanwhile, the younger toddlers/infants, will receive the same amount of enjoyment from simply cramming them through the incorrect holes, or opening the latch and pouring them all in. There’s also an additional Pandora’s box with people actually in the field, as once you start one project inevitably there’s 1000001 new ones that can coincide with the one just built, and therefore it is seen as an endless struggle, therefore they practice radical acceptance. The bar for most people is within their limitations and abilities to problem solve, so once they hit that level they inevitable will be forced to stop or spend an inordinate amount of time learning a new technique, skill, etc. It’s why those who are good at creating and actually building the required item/product are usually not the ones who imagined/dreamed it up in the first place.
AthionSo… in your example, I’m the toddler ramming square pegs in round holes?? Cause that’s pretty accurate ROFL :) … but yes, I can agree with that
Sammy Goodmanyea kinda 😭 more like the toddler who just opens the trap and shoves em all in without bothering to fit the triangle into the square, etc. etc. I’m not saying it doesn’t work, but it only works because of your level 😝. No hate meant at all btw, personally I’ve adopted a jack of all trades when it comes to pretty much anything skilled in life. I don’t care enough to learn anything properly, as I am too much of a perfectionist and my standards will never match my skill set, so I end up learning enough to ask/pay for what I truly want, and find someone who is expertly skilled enough to create/build what I can imagine.
Sammy GoodmanDon’t get me wrong btw- I think the majority of people nowadays fall into this category. Largely due to the adoption of “no child left behind” into everyday culture and workplaces, our world has become more drab and a lot more mundane. While it works for the majority of the population, I do envision a day when societal changes will come, and people dream of utopia once more.
You know, I hope you're right, I feel like the view on future is so bleak now, I want to be hopeful of the world again.
"Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than master of one".
Well put. I think this speaks to my comment that, you ALWAYS add more features than you need.
Dany GonzalezYou could improve on it by using a stream deck to change the camera feed. Then you could edit in real time as you film just push the button, change the angle and export it all to a file.
I have one and considered editing in camera but I know that ill forget or something will happen and ill have to do the recording again = pain.
occulticOwlhow does one start with vibe coding? so far I've just been relying on reddit + GitHub + stack overflow to find and make solutions to my problems
AthionLiterally, pick an AI and start talking to it :) I’ve learned more in the last 3-4 months than in the last 5 years… and I’m in IT. What Ben is describing is exactly what I do. Find pain points, and fix it. Minor example - when I create a new O365 user, the system displays the name and password in a format that I have to update before sending it out. I have a python script that opens a 2 window gui, drop the text into one side, click process, it changes it to my format. I click a copy button .. and it’s ready to go. 100% useless to anyone but me :) but perfect for me :)
There are some great replies here, and I think ill do a video on it as a where to start, based on how I do things. Maybe that will help.
rocky.hampsonHave you tried Cursor, I found it to be better than vscode
I've tried cursor, but I don't want to pay a sub to use my own credits.I started vibe coding the day chatGPT came out so its easier. for me like this.
windydo you know about claude code + agent os? it's perfect ecosystem for spec-driven development to get best results with vibe coding
Yeah I find Claude too expensive to be honest.
windythat's true, but ai tools cost. i'm a developer myself and i can say my developing speed min. doubled. but you're not a developer and would only use claude for home lab custom software, so yeah, probably not worth it
Personally I think giving up everything to AI is too much trust with the state today. In 12 months, very different story.
windyi was wrong about agent os, it's terrible addition to claude code. just so that it's clear 😄
windycoding agents show the changes they will do in "git diff" style. and you have option to allow each change or not. i find it pretty clear about what it does, i think same thing would be displayed in IDE
yeah, Im just not on board with it honestly , but im just stuck in my workflow.
rose(✿^‿^)🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈yeah I've got a few lil thingies I've vibe coded 1 is a auto timelapser for my 3d printer where it will automatically create a timelaps and smartly take pics every so often so I get a 60 second video based on the prints estimated time, then once it's done it'll auto generate a 30 second and a 10 second variant it's also locked down so only my login can access it butt it also has a sharing ability so I can create a public link with a expiry date and ability to add a password to it it's pretty cool another is a tool that informs via discord not message when a part of a website changes ATM I'm using it to detect when an item will be available in my town (supports cookie import to be able to do stuffs like that where it's for my local store) another is a lil application for rainbow six siege where it's a randomised to choose the operator recently vibe coded it over into rust, sharing the .exe goes alot smoother in rust compared to python (developing auto updating for this aswell but taking awhile to get back into the project, the update from GitHub to application is working but auto to GitHub isn't setup yet) being able to vibe code these projects is super fun, one of my friends dislikes vibe coding, I think it's really cool and fun
That is freaking awesome! 100% vibe savant you are!
Brombachdid you write it with c or python? is it running on OS or Browser ?
Its JS mostly, running in browser, but ill make in electron app at some point, I just have to refactor it first and then update it.
Brombachinteresting! so the performance is good with js? did you put some sort of compression or encoding ?
So far its ok. I may need to change the way it works when I start dealing in larger files though, but so far it sok
Brombachin OBS and the source record I had to dial in the compr and encoding a lot to find a good balance . but i would imagine you have a great graphics card
I use a m4 mac mini, so nothing special.
BrombachI did the exact same with OBS but it was messy! I appreciate you making this open source as promised ;D
Yeah I like things to just be simple, so a few days i iron out the bugs and get it up on the github.
KingBjordYou are quickly becoming my favourite find on TikTok
warpcodeI find vibe coding so frustrating. 75% of the time, it's just quicker and more reliable if I do it myself. I'll still use for documentation, planning etc, but for coding (tried Claude, grok code, gpt5 codex etc) it's frustratingly bad
If I could code then yeah I'd say the same, but I cant. I am a technical product manager though so I can write semi decent briefs and scopes though
warpcodeamazing for writing tasks. I'm a senior software engineer and I can safely say it's not even close to taking my job.....yet lol
True, it's got a long way to go.
FinchwizardGet one of the smaller ATEM extremes. I believe you can even just have a USB-C drive that records every stream plus the “Live” cut.
FinchwizardConnect it through to OBS and you can quickly tap the units input buttons to change that. Have a little PIP in action.
Yeah, thats like $500 or more! I did look at it but honestly this works with what I have already, and didn't cost me a thing!
YourNotLuis - 独Im pretty confident OBS has this functionality
ScootsI thought the same but technically you need to install a plugin it’s not base functionality
I saw that there is a plugin for muliti-cam but its a lot of messing around, and still not quite what I want, this was literally 2 hours work.
Yeah, its an extra plugin where as this is just an app on my desktop and off I go, and its exactly the workflow I want, so that works for me!
YourNotLuis - 独Thats fair, looks good might mess around with it myself
