You should use a VPN I'd you're downloading, so following on from the last video where we used #tailscale to create a network, now we're going to set up a downloader application in a #vm and connect it to #mullvad VPN.

lazaruslinuxI run a proton wire guard config in my router for my entire machine that is running my stack of docker containers. On top of that, I installed Tailscale (without Mullvad).
Nice, if it's all behind the vpn, then you're good.
JerryCan’t you just use a SOCKS5 proxy provided by your VPN and add that to your download client?
100% yes you can!
PeytonI don’t understand why having a vpn in this case would matter if it’s on your LAN. Your public IP would still be used…
PizzaThe VPN isn't only on the LAN. Your public IP is only used towards the VPN provider. Not the Downloader.
natronserious question, what country do you live in? I live in Australia and have been pirating via torrents for 20+ years with zero issues, legal or other.
Me personally, Im in Thailand but im Australian.
DukeQuestion: using your guide on setting up your ARR stack, is it ok to put the vm machine with casaos on tailscale and then mulvad?
Yes, you may have some issues with the VM. If possible, run Kasa OS on dedicated hardware.
arwanjhx3gnmy go to as starter is qbittorrent-wireguard with proton config on docker. had a hard time getting glutetun+qbit+*arrs to work, maybe ill come back to it one day
It's always worth a try with the costs going up.
mailbox_emojithere is a docker image out there which uses transmission behind a VPN, able to be set up with any VPN provider (I'm using airvpn)
Yeah thats a good place to start from, out of the gate its built into the container.
Ricky Richis express VPN good?
If I ever recommend a VPN, it's going to be Mulvad or Proton. Those are my personal preference.
shyrloxAnything accessing a sharing hub. Indexer, RSS, downloaders...
At that point just add the whole device on a VPN and ensure a killswitch.
Jakob Lund488I wouldnt let my VPN activities anywhere near a North American company. why put your trust in tailscale to not log VPN activities? you already have to trust your VPN provider, no need to add anymore layers to that. don't use tailscale for this!!
There is always selfhosting of Headscale as an option. Also they are canadian but self host is always an option
Jakob Lund488Canadian or American is the same in my book. tailscale is not a no log service. headscale makes it better. but honestly, just use gluetun
clientI just use custom docker images with vpns built into the container.
if you start with it yes, easy, however its a pain if you have to rebuild each container later.
clientEh I just use playbooks so it’s relatively easy to push out any updates
Taylorgluetun works very well. I use it to download all my plex media. I also have sonarr and radarr download all the stuff by using overseerr and it all goes through qbittorrent, which is setup to run through gluetun. makes the whole process very fluid, and very fast
CASyHDor just don't incriminate yourself and Torrent(upload)
KingBjordThoroughly enjoying your content, keep up the great work 😁👑
Thank you KingBjord, appreciate it.
Max DiOrioHad no idea Tailscale added that feature. Love it
Its in beta but yeah, really happy they did
CeslavGluetun is king
thetruthisoutther3it will still use your public ip. I don't know why putting soemthig inside another something will be of any use when you still have public ip.
You're using a VPN on the virtual machine so it should be using the VPN IP.
wutI like tail scale but this is a bit much for just using a VPN. either setting it up at the router level or using a docker gateway is much more purpose-built. I'm not suspicious of tail scale reporting people but now you've also created an ACL headache if you ever want to use tail scale for anything else on your network since it's flat by default.
You can just use Add the VPN and just use it as an exit node, so it doesn't really get in the way of the rest of the network.
Tik or TokIf you are paying that, then you already have created a paper trail.
True, mullvad is pretty good at ignoring requests, but no matter what, there is ALWAYS a trail online, but its more about being less easy a target.
reisingfoenixi just use real debrid
BhaalI am a fresh egg in the homelab world. I have a plex media server for music on a NUC using an external drive. If I were to start fresh with my set up to be safer with my data in regards to OS and software where would I start?
adamstelMullvad doesn't support port forwarding so your torrent downloader can be limited on a bunch of trackers due to not being connectable. It's rarely a real problem IME, but it can be, especially on private trackers.
That's good to know. I haven't had an issue personally, but good to know.
adamstelWhen there are thousands of seeders, it's never a problem. It's more of one on niche content when there are only a few seeders, you will only be able to connect to those who do have port forwarding set up when you do not.
elRadixif you have a glinet/openwrt router you can create a VPN policy to add your vm/llxc host to specific VPN Tunnel... no extra monthly costs https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/4/interface_guide/vpn_dashboard/
THAT SHI KRAYYNo one NEEDS VPN; torrenting should be done over a VPN, but there are other more efficient ways to accomplish the goal of torrenting that use HTTPS which are sufficient, high-speed, and private enough.
Unless you're in the UK or Aus these days and don't want to give every site your passport now.. but yes, there are always other options.
BirbGunPlease just don't use torrents. Please use Usenet / newsgroups
Solid advice.
Xeno367but you cant put a proton VPN?
SLIMYou can
reisingfoenixits too slowe
Xeno367I'll search Thank you, but when you say downloader it means any downloads on internet or?
SLIMThey mean something like torrent or usenet software. Glutun has documentation on how to configure glutun on their github
Xeno367And still Be free ? cause I'm already paying proton suit
SLIMGlutun is not an additional cost
Xeno367so its adding a VPN like that that cost 5 bucks?
You can't use Proton VPN on Tailscale in this same method. You can add it to your device though.
The VPN provider will have a cost yes, but the Gluetun software is free.
S6yxgluetun is easy to setup and no need for this rigamarole to route traffic for one service
/home/thankarezosyou should also have the indexer behind vpn cause it hits the torrent sites. i use glueton and have all my stacks behind the vpn
Yeah that's pretty solid advice.
Adam van CadeI still don’t understand why he opts for a vm instead of a docker
ease, you can add multipe apps into the same tailnet exitpoint. Yes Gluetun is also usable but I only have a few min to make it explainable.
PizzaSame with gluetun. Just create a gluetun network and assign all other containers to the same network.
Frizdo every client count towards your client number or is all talscale mulvad clients considered as one client?
you can have 100 machines on a free tailnet, and users are limited. But you cna have a different VPN on each machine if you want.
jcmthis is exactly what I do and it works beautifully
jcmI also use cloudflare with zero trust Google auth to remote into my servers from outside the home.
Ray ZaneEven better just setup a firewall like pfsense or opnsense and do policy routing out the VPN for all your downloaders etc
Opensense/pfsense is a big step for a lot of people though.
Ray ZaneWith the amount of resources and YouTube videos out there, at this point you just follow along.
S6yxmad work
Ray ZaneDon't be afraid to learn a new skill. Especially if it'll be a better overall solution and may save you the bacon one day.
vonobaadd to that custom nat rules so you can do port forwarding to the VPN provider and have better connectivity.
I don’t like mullvad I use IVPN sorry
All good, it's not for everyone :)
I do, however, like your explanation. I am currently majoring in Cybersecurity associates degree an also have an IT diploma, and I love your videos.
Thanks! that means a lot, Im trying to make it accessable to as many people as I can. :)
SAV3GE 🏴 🇬🇧Or you could create a VLAN, get your router to route all traffic on that VLAN over the VPN with a kill switch enabled then on your already existing docker OS virtual machine, add in the additional VLAN, add in a secondary network for docker, setup the downloader with the secondary network adapter then those containers are on the VPN but using the same system
S6yxmad work
I don't know man...my favorite kind of vms are debian with minimalist install 80-120mb ram idle(will need 1gb at install time) i ran wiergurd vm on a 400mb(could be 320 but better safe than sorry) and never exeded 256mb ram
I think I might do a series of videos just talking about different distros. I think there's a lot of questions people have.
hellanotstraightwait can i put my existing mullvad into tailscale so i dont have to pay for it on tailscale
Unfortunately not
efteling_incidentunraid allows you to do this, enable tailscale for the container and enable exit node
hellanotstraightok i assumed so. cause when i looked at it briefly for game hosting stuff i only saw an option for purchases a mullvad sevirce withing tailscaleig ig doesnt make sense to connect existing service in terms of privacy
thechrisanityRunning Wireguard in a container and routing traffic through it with network: service, might be a bit simpler. But this is pretty cool.
Mira 🚦I have tried this, but how to open ip the web ui doing this?
s0met1ng_w0ngYou have to open all the ports on the container that’s being used for the network pass though.
BeenoirI’ll be rebuilding my entire setup soon, and I’ll be using containers and a VPN this time! May I ask which indexers you use?
Just the default ones, nothing special
Is this a viable option if you’re running services on a raspberry? The pi 5 can absolutely handle sonarr, radarr, tailscale, etc. using docker, but running a VM feels like a bit much 😅 its handling gluetun easily tho
Yeah it may be a bit much for a vm on a pi.
M V37Do you have video about setting up a VLAN in openwrt? And potentially a VLAN without internet access
I don't, but I will try and do one. Good, thanks for the idea.
Guerrilla.life 📍IBZFor the laymen.. What VPN do you recommend? NordVPN or?
Mullvad is my preferred optiin
I really like mullvad, not just because it's in tailscale, but they are very privacy focused, as a VPN should be
The First LordMullvad is good yes, but cost a lot more then Nord which you can get 5 years for around $200cad. For the avrage person nord or pia are cheaper, just as fast and you can put torrents through and use as exit nodes as well. Glutan is too complicated for moat useres, just get binhex-Deluge and set it as the exitnode with your vpn info. Tailscale is great, and you should run this to access your services easy outside your house.
tiktommdmilProton is awesome.
Adam van CadeProton
zilvesta123Mullvad would be the best privacy wise. They do not log, anything. You can even pay them in cash by sending them the money via post. And their speeds are good. Proton is a good second. They do log, but only when a judge orders them to start logging activities of a certain customer.
